Apparently the buyer took his mate to see quite a few first, this was the first he went to see on his own according to a comment on the original post by said mate.

I think your 2k is a very conservative estimate, Simon_CSK paid 7K to have the job done http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=96627&p=840764 and Muddy spent 2.6K doing it himself http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=96627&p=840815

You're on a roll today sir!

I don't know the legal position but if it was a private sale I was always told it was buyer beware .... ie tough. That said if someone had gone out of their way to cover up faults and misrepresent the vehicle perhaps you could take civil proceedings? Perhaps the solution involves big hairy bikers?

Here's the picture I was on about The arrows are pointing to the ribbon cable, in the case of the ribbon cable it cracks the conductors and stops working, I believe East Coast Rover had new cables produced. The TD5 speedos which are similar VDO items require you to uncrimp the back of the black metal ring that holds the glass in to take them apart. There are some pictures of me doing this to a TD5 speedo on this post http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=69070&page=12#entry594115 I don't know if it is the same for your speedo but I'd guess it was similar.

Hmm, I thought that part number quoted was the same part number as the 1997 NAS 90's. If it is then I imagine the problem is exactly the same. http://www.roversnorth.com/ProductDesc.aspx?code=AMR5721 But if you have opened it up, checked inside the speedometer and there is no ribbon cable then I am wrong. If the speedometer is instead built like a TD5 speedometer I'd say the only thing that would stop the lcd working (assuming the rest of the speedo does work) would be the connections between the lcd and pcb need cleaning. I've not yet seen a TD5 speedo with a malfunctioning screen though.

Uh oh, scotch lock on an unidentified plug.....problem?

It may be wired so that breaking the circuit lights the warning, that way a wiring fault would also light the warning rather than a wiring fault hiding it. -
I believe you have a NAS Defender? The NAS speedos were different to the English ones that look the same. On yours there is a flexible pcb ribbon cable linking the display to the main circuit board, over the years this fails leaving you with no display. Repairs can be done and your mileage will be correctly displayed once more. If my assumption about you being in America is correct then your best bet is to contact East Coast Rover who when I last looked did a repair service for this fault. http://www.eastcoastrover.com/speedo.html

Yep, that'd be the way to do it. Depending on how blunt you let it get you could possibly use a diamond sharpening stone.

If we're talking bodge then get some fine metal mesh and melt it into the back of the plastic with a soldering iron

How long ago did you move from Virtualbox to VMWare? I use Virtualbox all the time (on a mac) for work and can't remember the last time it crashed. I run various versions of windows and linux in VM's including using them with picoscopes and various usb programmers etc. -
I reckon it'll be fine with the glass in. But I'm not paying if you break it It won't take much to bend the top of the door ... especially if you have any rust! I'd just move the glass to the opposite place to which you are trying to bend and not worry too much.

Whether it was made bent or has got bent surely the solution is the same?

Get some decent poison from a professional or the other option is to have a thorough sort out and arm yourself with a hammer to dispatch them when you disturb them, a spade is also quite effective. Or maybe you know someone with a terrier? Sod scaring them off, deal with them. -

I know it's a bit late and if I'm blunt I have no idea what your TPS looks like, however have you considered encasing the frayed wires with araldite or similar to remove the strain and insulate the damaged section? -

I should point out that when directly asked if he used to be No Fear Off Road that Ed Barrington said 'No'. So having :- The same first and middle name. The same age A Range Rover that he repaired and the had sign written 'No Fear Off Road Breakers' A past as a motocross rider. Friends with 7 of the Fear family Businesses located at the same address etc It is all purely a coincidence. -
