  1. reminds me, my speedo's just stopped reading also. must get under there and see why
  2. If im honest, im getting a little fed up of coming on here only to see a handful of posters portraying a very 'holier than thou' and condiscending attitude toward others. you were kind enough to attach the page from the handbook that contained the information this member sought, but I feel you even used that in order to aid your point scoring. Why should this person have to have an excuse, and particularly what business of yours is it to decide if it is valid or not?! Had I not owned a defender before my discovery I would have never dreamed that there was the information within the handbook that is there, Id never have thought to look there for information about off road driving and wading plugs. Handbooks generally in my experience contain rudimentary information on the operation of each switch, lever, button, dial etc and how to change fuses and fluids. Is this forum not a technical 'resource'? were we all not new to land rover ownership at one point? There are many people on here who are more than happy to share their knowledge freely and without prejudice. It saddens me when I see things like this. Perhaps in future, if the question affects your sensibilities, try not posting. Kevin, It is quite forseeable that you have been looking in the correct places and not seeing the holes because they are already plugged. On my most recent discovery and the spare engine I purchased for it, one or both of the wading plug holes had indeed been plugged. If you do plug them, you may wish to only plug them when you know you shall be wading, or periodically remove them to allow anything within to drain. The problem with the plugs being in permanently is it stops you identifying oil leaks etc which can be damaging to the vehicle. your other option is of course breather pipes with adaptors screwed into the wading plug holes. If clear ones are used, you still get some early warning of leaks etc.
  3. i wouldnt have thought that 4 inches lift alone would be sufficient if you want it to articulate 'properly'. no direct experience of this myself, but your main problem will be any amount of up travel. regardless of the arches being cut and flared, I dont think the inner arches themselves are big enough on the inside to accommodate 37s... If its only downtravel you crave, then you'd probably be fine but imo its only half the picture. id be only too happy to be corrected though!
  4. I have 265/75R16 with full arch flares and no lift. wanted the extra diff clearance, but didnt want to raise my centre of gravity any higher than necessary to maintain towing ability. looks good, most importantly works well, and arches were a damned site cheaper than a set of +2 shocks and springs
  5. I learnt something! I didnt realise you had to stitch from one side to the other!. I just used to aim down the middle and draw a line. Thanks Nige!
  6. aluminium wings dont rust, that one is steel
  7. thanks guys. just to clarify, I wasnt worried about the guys it was coming from. ive been buying things from Danny and Aaron for a while now, I was more concerned with the powers that be getting their wires crossed. Someone told me that someone he knows once bought a vehicle from a police auction, only to have the police later try and seize the vehicle for being stolen property! anyway, it seems Id got my wires crossed anyway. I dont think the vehicle was stolen recovered in the end, it was attempted stolen
  8. not knowing anything much about this, I have always wondered, supposing you managed to get an engine of the right year, and the injectors in the 'blown' engine are in good order, can you not swap the old injectors into the new engine (in the same positions) and plug it all together thus negating the need to do any computer jiggery pokery?
  9. Ive heard the engine running, and seen the vehicle. Theyre offering a 30 day warranty on it too, its just the whole stolen-recovered thing that was bugging me. They are a legit Vat registered breaker and parts dealer. Amazon 4x4 in case anyone is familiar with them
  10. has anyone ever bought a stolen-recovered vehicle or engine from one? I hear all sorts of stories about people buying such items only to have endless hassle down the line when it turns out a papertrail went awry and someone thinks it's still stolen. reason Im asking is I was after a spare engine to drop into my discovery while I rebuild the current one so I can take my time over it and do a thorough job. My local reputable LR breakers had one in a stolen-recovered vehicle and have removed it for me. Im supposed to be picking it up tomorrow. Are there any steps I can take to stop any drama occurring down the line. I assume even as a temporary fitment I must notify the DVLA of the engine number change? What paperwork do I need to be seeing from the breakers? what paperwork should they have? I believe they bought it from the police or insurance company. or should I pass on it, find another engine, or alternatively just drop my sump, slip in a new set of big end shells and cross my fingers?
  11. rear flexible coupling/rotflex/donut? sounds a bit like what my dad's did... does it happen mostly on acceleration, overrun, steady speed?
  12. agreed, the air needs bleeding out as best as you can. air compresses very easily whereas diesel does not. compressed air anywhere between the pump and the injectors will not generate the pressure required to overcome the injector spring and open the nozzle
  13. military land anchors is my guess!
  14. is anyone able to enlighten me as to rough dimensions of the official mil spec one? I might consider making or having one made, but no idea how big or small thanks
  15. dont they compete in the paralympics? hardly the point mind you this topic has inevitably gone WAY OT
  16. morning guys. in a one-thing-after-another kinda way, starting up the 200 was a bit of a chore this morning. well... the engine turned over once or twice before firing rather than being on the button. there was also a distinct chugginess and i could see my gear stick was jerking in an unbalanced sort of way. when increasing rpm, the chug becomes a knock, of the kind that you get with a completely blocked injector, or other horrendously expensive instances. I thought clearances, and havent checked yet but i did set them only 2-3 weeks ago does anyone have any experience of the same symptoms and any ideas what it could be that's just happened thanks
  17. too hot, too cold, too wide, too narrow, too big, too small. trial and error fabrication
  18. funny you should say that. its been absolutely shocking for me this morning! slow, so slow firefox gives up and the odd invision error thrown in for good measure
  19. I think personally you just need to think and make a decision based on what might happen should an unforseen accident occur. Tyres on too narrow a rim (easily accessible information) would almost certainly be deemed dangerous as it affects the contact patch of the tyre on the road. same goes for people running 285s on 7" rims just for convenience sake. Not a risk (calculated or otherwise) that Im gonna be taking anyway
  20. do land based VHF operators require licensing also? I only ask because I have a MCA marine VHF licence that I had to do a course for. VHF on board a boat from what I remember has almost never been free, and as it gains more and more features such as DSC, (which is used for distress and specific calling, for which every vessel is assigned an identifying number), I can understand it getting more and more expensive. BUT... Ive a real problem with emergency services being charged to use it, particularly voluntary organisations that should by rights be funded by the govt in the first place!
  21. I know ive not posted up in this topic or the other yet. Im still hoping to make it to this, but ive just changed jobs, havent actually started the new one yet, and dont yet know if im going to be 'on call' or not
  22. x-charge relay claims 180 amp continuous, 250+ amp short duration surely one of these would be more than man enough? and serve both purposes as a split charge and switchable link?
  23. hmmmmm if Chris was along the right lines with his overspeeding speedo cable, I reckon its something running overspeed... Im with Fridge, I reckon the fan was being forced round at some crazy crazy speed!
  24. Nice one. I shall have a go at this when I get a spare bit of time
  25. freestyles are 7inch right? 285s shouldnt be on 7inch rims. it pinches the sidewalls in and forcibly changes the way the tyre sits on the road. cant be helping?
