  1. what's brought this on Matt? hardly seems right to do that to yours. where will all the mucky tools and gear go?
  2. Hi guys I know im fitting these to a discovery but they also go on range rovers and there may be more people who have had experience of them. Im about to fit my new set of 'flexi' arches to my discovery1 200tdi 3dr, but have come to a bit of a stand still whilst considering the instructions that come with them. Unlike the fibreglass ones that devon4x4 sell, which in shape are what I would call a valance arch, similar in idea to defenders, these plastic ones have a complete underside too, theyre a complete channel section of sorts. In simple terms, where the d4x4 ones are \ shaped, these are _\ now, the instructions say to offer the arch up. draw round the INSIDE, cut, offer up again, fit. the underside of them would then I guess be siliconed to the cut edge making a nice neat join etc etc but I have 2 concerns here. firstly, that I would have just created a mud and water trap? on removing my original bonded rubber arch trims, It was clear that even they had done this. The second concern is whether this limits tyre travel up into the wheel box with it having a solid underside, or whether it is unlikely to pose a problem. Browsing the D4x4 instructions for the fitting of theirs, you draw around the OUTSIDE of the arch, then a new line 30mm inside it, you cut and fit. Part of me wonders whether it would be a good idea to trim away the underneath face of these arches and fit them thus, but then theres a 30mm lip of single skin ally just free and easy inside. Would this be a problem? I would quite like to know how the board would tackle this problem, and from those who have fitted such items to their vehicles in the past, whether they were this fully enclosed arch, or valance type, and how they fitted them Many thanks Jim
  3. could be a good time to buy a haynes manual?
  4. Im a bit late jumping on the band wagon, but this sounds like a great idea. Personally I shall be with tent, whether it be edale, matlock, baslow, wherever.
  5. first time ive seen one of these up close and now wondering why are people not making their own ? that looks very very much to me like the double cardan bit is just two end flanges welded together with a piece of steel sandwiched in between. (but youve just said something about a ball joint? where's that then? and what's its purpose? could do that and send it to the engineers for trueing up! certainly know what Im doing if i have vibration issues! sorry, I know that's not the point of the post, I shall go and sit in the off topic naughty corner!
  6. any particular reason youve used the audio connections on the switcher rather than the video ones Matt?
  7. I was under the impression the escort cosworth came in two variants, an earlier large turbo and a later small turbo. To the best of my knowledge they never ran two together. Im talking about the road going versions, what happened in the competition version could be completely different. toyota supra variants came in twin turbo configurations, but evidently they were limited as most end users remove the setup and fit a single large turbo instead
  8. but a great idea if you dont?
  9. personally i really dislike indispension units, something to do with wood chippers losing whole suspension arms and wheels 5 minutes off the motorway ifor williams are great... but... thought about atlas? Bloke I know's got one, very well built, cost a fraction of an ifor and not quite such a thief magnet maybe? IIRC 3.5tonne gross, tips, options of high sides, ramps, all sorts, makes it a very versatile trailer http://www.atlastrailers.co.uk/index.asp
  10. I think mr turner might need to bash his anchor with a particularly large hammer. I did see him doing all manner of unspeakable things to it in some rocks! got there and my camera was broken. saw quite a few cars i recognised, all seemed to be enjoying themselves and doing well
  11. Id planned to be there to spectate... if spectating is allowed? what's the deal with spectating?
  12. what age discovery? if it's a 200tdi the alternator belt only drives the alternator in which case you;d be fine, just dont use your lights, stereo etc if you can help it (keep electrical use to a minimum)
  13. haha brilliant! sounds like some places round here
  14. if it's as good as you say it is, I would say its a flipping bargain and needs to be jumped on! discoverys in very good condition are few and far between. I spent ages finding mine
  15. wow! 30 quid more per tyre for a 255/85. economies of scale I guess, but it really sucks!
  16. im in the same position. really like the look of the kl71 but unfortunately it's the range of sizes that puts me in a tight spot. 1250 wide tyres in a 33 are far too wide for putting on my discovery in my opinion, so I'll have to go with 285/75R16, but 16inch tyres cost more than 15 inch models if only BFG werent the only company to make a 255/85. I wish there was a more modestly priced alternative
  17. not being a pedant at all Nick it's simple and depends on what you want to use the vehicle for. if the tyres are just for show and you dont require articulation, do the 265s fit on with no mods... YES if you want articulation still and want to use the vehicle offroad... you're gonna struggle without some small 'adjustments'
  18. I can only assume the supplier the guy is buying from lists parts (As do many) by whether it is a 10 spline or 24 spline driveline (which is the more often known specification) in which case it's 24 if they list the CVs individually, it's a 32 spline as said
  19. I certainly wouldnt. not in the long run anyway using softer alloy wheel nuts on steel wheels is a big nono. should only be temporary eg with spare wheel, and limited speed and mileage. this is because you just cant get the nuts as tight, and doing them up on the steels deforms them slightly. when used with the alloy wheels, as said, they grip in an entirely different way. the loading is spread over a number of surfaces. do it right and get some steel nuts. theyre hardly expensive
  20. 300tdi and late 200tdi like mine, should be the stronger 24 spline HTH Jim
  21. wowzers, 1.6!! ive got the 1.41 and that's plenty low gearing. In fact Im looking at fitting 33s which will 'just' bring it back in line with original gearing
  22. check your prop UJs. I had the same thing haunting me for ages, and when I checked the UJs on the front prop, the transfer box end one was toast!
  23. Welcome Rolly! I'll cut right to the chase, Im fairly confident in saying that your problem most likely lies with the small 'lift pump' on the side of the engine. Although you say youve cleaned it, it is the seals/diaphragm that go and it gradually stops pumping fuel through the filter to the injection pump. It is a common failure and most importantly, a relatively inexpensive one. Good Luck
  24. whoops, you already said you've rung them perhaps contact UK trading standards. It's not acceptable in the slightest!
