  1. Not sure if this is the approved method (or even if it works for everyone) but I noticed a while ago that after having my D2 on axle-stands under the chassis so that the axle was hanging, and running the engine, when I put it on it's wheels again the bags were totally deflated...
  2. YAY! Ya bugger it's off! The split cotter was tight but the trusty 1-1/4 socket (better fit than 32mm) fetched it...
  3. Well so far I am having trouble even getting the hub off ( the top taper split with only a few double-hammer taps and I thought "oh, how nice... Hope the bottom one is as easy" - that was two hours of hammering ago) so I'm nowhere near the normally more difficult bit of pushing the joints out... But I'll certainly let you know how it goes...
  4. OK - so NOW I understand... Thanks for that... but I wonder what happens if somebody misreads it and clicks to buy?
  5. I know good paint can be expensive, but....
  6. Good advice... I also intend to run it back and forth a dozen or so times (no load) with the the rattle gun before use... It's only a cheap one and the thread does look a bit ropey, but I suspect/hope it will do the job
  7. Never mind the quality, feel the width I never realised these were so HUGE... Like Christmas heavy duty track rod and drag link gaiter clips an pliers window eyebrows heater hose and ball joint press. More to come before the weekend I hope.
  8. Changing a box in the road? Hardcore! Welcome to the forum...
  9. Just realised, the disc shields need to come off or I can't use the 'two hammers' technique on the ball joints. What is the current thinking on these shields? A few years ago everybody i knew just ran without them - is the thinking still the same?
  10. I love the smell of gear oil in the mornings... Well, it's actually evening but why spoil a good meme with the facts
  11. Done a bit of work today... but had to come inside to escape the heat of the Scottish summer... The theme of today has been: "And the easy shall be hard, but the hard shall be easy" first up was the hub nut... after getting all psyched up and thinking I would break my (non impact) socket, it just whizzed off a dream Next came these twelve-point bolts that hold the camper carrier, which I thought would be easy but which took a 2ft extension to shift! Then the rotor - with impact driver I positioned the biggest pozi head I had in the rotor retaining screw, got ready with the hammer, applied some undo-torque and.... it came loose The actual rotor followed suit (easy) as did 4off TRE's, but the dust shield bolts (7mm AF) are staying put since they WOULD not move The actual hub retaining bolts were easy but the hub too 30 mins to even get to going, but it's off now. I'm wondering whether to replace the heavily corroded CV joint, bit it seems in ok condition apart from that... Later I'll be back out once it cooles off a bit.
  12. Good decision! I love the old 21/4 petrol - when running well it sounds like a well oiled traction engine on tickover (and that, to me at least, is a compliment) but without the hissing
  13. Can't help with your exact question, but would strongly advise having a look at the Picos De Europa. Although the road north of Potes is close except at weekends for the summer, the rest of that area is fantastic...
  14. I just thought some people might be interested in this... 53reg Discovery TD5 automatic with 18" wheels wearing BFG AT2's I recently drove from Aberdeenshire to Portsmouth, then around the Picos De Europa for a few days, then back from Portsmouth to Aberdeenshire, and (Unusually for me) I kept a note of fuel and mileage. The numbers are below. Miles litres MPG Notes 518.8 74.29 31.75 Mainly motorway cruising at 60mph (Aberdeenshire to Portsmouth) 243.2 44.78 24.69 Spain - sedate driving on mountain roads 149.1 26.34 25.73 Spain - sedate driving on mountain roads 309.6 58.82 23.93 Spain - sedate driving on mountain roads 186.0 39.25 21.54 Spain - sedate driving on mountain roads 550.8 75.40 33.20 Mainly motorway cruising at 60mph (Portsmouth to Aberdeenshire) Totals: Miles Litres Average MPG 2508.3 404.28 28.2 Other points of note about this trip: I find it interesting that the Spanish bits vary so much in fuel consumption, and also that I used less fuel coming home from Portsmouth to Aberdeenshire (since it's uphill, obviously) than I did going The engine had a mild oil leak when we set out (probably rear cam cover), and it no longer has (and yes - there IS still oil in it ) The suspension noticeably smoothed out during the trip - like maybe the shockers needed some exercise? (the car has been standing for a while before this trip) The tyres (brand new BFG AT2s) were noticeably quiet to start with, but more noisy after a few hundred miles, to the extent that I was wondering about wheel bearings) I got an XYZ warning light (M+S) once, but tazzing the stick back and forth with the ignition off cleared it I got an ACE warning once (amber) but that also cleared by turning the ignition off and on again. There were no other problems at all... All in all I had a great trip and the Disco is a wonderful touring vehicle.
  15. I have a Disco 2 in which the air conditioning allows separate temparature control of the left and right sides. I drive alone quite often and I want to be able to affect both sides with one switch... So my question is: If I simply wire in a couple of jumpers between the switches, will a click on one switch affect both sides? (I am also thinking of having a switch in the jumpers so that I can have them isolated if I want)
  16. On the rear step - allow more time than you think - I had huge problems removing the bolts... IIRC the bolts go through from the outside (which is good), but they were so corroded in that one of the bolt heads snapped off. Then there is not enough room to do anything unless you remove the fuel tank. I ended up just cutting through the bracket to remove (and scrap) mine...
  17. Thanks - and yes they do, but the only one I see is for the pre-facelift D2, and mine is a '53 model...
  18. Thanks Blanco - I didn't realise it was as little 'droop' as that. I'll probably just leave it where it is then I believe mine is a bearmach one, but was a super cheap noname on Ebay cos of bad paint... Interesting point about the spoiler... I may try to set up something using the Disco bumper/spoiler.
  19. Looking for information please... When fitting a front steel bumper to a Discovery 2 - what solutions have you seen, or did you come up with, for the low-hanging washer bottle problem? Cheers!
  20. I had this setup on my old RRC pickup, but I also kept the normal jets and the one second timer relay that controls them - that way I get a one second 'super-soaker' blast followed by normal jets if I keep the lever pulled. Otherwise I think you would really need a bigger washer bottle! I am planning on doing this to my Disco 2 at some point too, it was a really effective system
  21. I am looking to fit an additional "accessory socket" (aka cig-lighter socket or cigar-lighter socket if you are posh) in the rear of my D2. I have a voltage sensing relay and an inline fuse, so the always on bit shouldn't cause issues. Does anyone know of a convenient place where I can find something to tap into within the cabin? I have had a look at the cabin fuse box, but there don't appear to be any spare live fused supplies...
  22. Before anyone takes this literally, these are not directional tyres - although it would have been nice to see the offside patterns the other way round Every morning when I open the barn I get a glorious rubber smell wafting out - I wonder how long that will last...
  23. I love the smell of (new) rubber in the mornings... Any suggestions for pressures? A 'bloke dahn the pub' said 28psi all round and, although that feels nice I think it might be a bit on the low side...
