  1. The lower section of Sarn from Aberdulais to Dyffryn Cellwyn is open June, July and August every year. Just keep to the marked byway when crossing Walters land during these times and you wont have any problems. The rest is closed.
  2. My advise, you don't need a fancy workshop, you don't need need loads of money, you don't need lots of time but you will need plenty of enthusiasm. My last two defender chassis up builds (fairly standard spec) were done outside on the driveway during winter, cost about 3.5k each in total and took about 6 months each. Once you completed a project you want to do another one, i completed project number 13 a few years back and am currently planning another Final tip, we'd like lots of pictures please
  3. A fantastic weekend, great weather, great company and only minor damage. Thoroughly enjoyed the night nav and hopefully next years will be even better. A few snaps to whet your appetite.
  4. I've had the Paddock ones on my landy for about 5 years, no probs.
  5. It's quite easy, i've done it twice now, with the original ribbed roof, and the current smooth roof. Just un-stitch the rear panel from the roof skin, cut through the gutters and remove the end panel, shorten the roof skin by however much and re attached with rivets and plenty of sealant. Yes Les 10 years, it's due a rebuild now as there are lots of little things which need updating / replacing.
  6. A few fairly recent pics for you, those build pics are now 10 years old and some motivation for Ross to get on with his build
  7. Cheers, i've got loads of pics if you need anything specific.
  8. A few changes I'd make to improve strength and reduce weight. Add return edges to front and rear of main plate, double up thickness around bolt holes and cut majority in the middle of tray. High quality CAD drawing below should explain it better.
  9. My standard bowrope has survived on my truck since 2006, used for marshalling, laning and forestry work, I can't comment on the budget version though.
  10. I'm trying to find the advert picture of Ranulph Fiennes Disco 1 with all his expedition gear laid out in front of it during his lost city expedition in the early 90's. Anyone able to help, I've failed with just google!
  11. Has anyone here actually put a very light trailer through IVA ? what's it like? I'm contemplating a building a small camping trailer from scratch.
  12. Nice bunch of guys at All Terrain Services, well clued up with a good site , Also another thumbs up for Jumbo.
  13. My 1" lifted defender eats the uj on the front of the transfer box, it has to be changed ever 18months (about 7k) the rest are still fine after 40k. (95%) road use)
  14. I've got a 6 year old Prime Tech cheapie RTT which has served me really well, has survived storm force winds, cold, heat, torrential rain, the cover is a bit torn now and needs a bit of sewing when it comes out of storage this spring. I've spent about 70 nights in it so far without problem.
  15. Yeah, up in Scotland as a play thing. It would have been nice to see someone compete in it with a set of proper axles and tyres.
  16. It's always been like it, but now i'm doing motorway miles daily, I should do something about it. Will give all of your suggestion a go if the rain ever stops.
  17. Will check timing, tappets etc when it gets a service. brake and hand brake all good, no binding. Boost gauge measuring from the turbo to pump line, at the turbo end. It will boost up to 1.3 when flooring it but I lift off a bit as it doesn't seem to give any extra oomph. Yes, haze from the exhaust visible in headlights.
  18. Roof tent lives in the garage so just the roof bars to add drag. No viscous fan, no front silencer and road based tyres should all be helping me, but it looks like my unknown millage 1992 engine is definitely down on power. It's due a major service once the weather improves, so will also do a tappet and timing check and injector clean. If no improvement then a bit more tweaking may be the only answer?
  19. Is there anything that can be done to improve the top end grunt on a 200TDI defender. Mine struggles past 65-70, especially in a strong head wind/uphill. I know it's slightly over geared with a 1.2 transfer box and 235/85 tyres, currently running 1.2 bar of boost and the pump diaphragm turned about 60 degrees. Ideally I don't want to change the gearing as this is perfect the rest of the time. At 65mph on a long run it'll get 29mpg, but as soon as I push past this (an it's a real effort) the mpg drops to around 24. Any suggestions or am I just dreaming ?
  20. I used rivets, as I had to fill in the existing filler rivet holes anyway.
  21. I used the existing filler rivet holes to fix a piece of ali in place, step the edges the thickness of the wing skin so that the plate sits flush, and fill over the join, you can hardly see it.
  22. I use those Makita LXTs on a daily basis and they are a lovely drill, puts up with plenty of abuse, I can't comment on the hammer function though as I always use an SDS drill for masonry work.
  23. Back off the adjust nut on the back of the drum ?
