Bowie69
Heading to south Wales with my son on Friday for a long weekend, in LGT, camping at the Showcaves and hoping to get some camping and hiking in, and 'wheeling' as the cool kids call it. Tempted to do Strata Florida and maybe Elan Valley if there's time/weather on the Sunday, wondered if anyone else was about in the area and fancied meeting up on it? "I'm not organising anything", just seeing if anyone wants to tag along. Nay bother if not

Escape
It would take some planning from our side, but I'm definitely up for it! And I know a mate who's been talking about for some time as well.
bishbosh
Sadly we have guests this weekend (so I am instructed) and I have no winch or rear recovery point. Other than that I'd be there like a shot!
simonr
It would be nice to have another Forum laning weekend in Wales, like in the olden days!

miketomcat
I'm hoping to get out more next year but we'll see. Definitely up for a forum trip though. @Bowie69 On a side note given the amount of rain recently the strata might not be the best choice of lane.
Anderzander
Very good point Mike - be very careful. If my memory is right - if you come at it from the south, you can tell how it’s going to be from the first river crossing - where you go over at an angle. If it’s got any pace to it - it’s going to be dangerous further on.
Anderzander
I’ve just asked my cousin, who lives in Aberystwyth, how it is .. she said they’ve got flooding and a lot of the roads are impassable. Strata is pretty close to there.

Quite, if troublesome, I'll turn round, also got Elan Valley(with permit for link road) and my eye on another as backup. Will find something for sure It was wet wet wet last night, but a beautiful day once the cloud lifted, doing Pen Y Fan from Cwn Gwdi, 8 miles but was a lot harder than expected, but the 10 year old absolutely loved it.

Anderzander
What’s the link road permit ? Is it that middle section that’s owned by the water company? If I remember it correctly. I haven’t been down that way for years - I think I need to go and stay in Rhayader for a few days again.
Bowie69
At the north end, yup, permit is free (just an email) and given assuming they don't already have too many people on it. It joins two byways meaning you don't have to turn around.
Ed Poore
Damn, if I'd seen this earlier I'd have done the work I now need to do tomorrow today. We're not massively far from Strata in the grand scheme of things. If you fancied an alternative there's some spectacular lanes nearer us in Brechfa. More fun than Strata but not as scenic (in some ways).
Popular Post Bowie69
So... Strata was pretty alright, water levels not high enough to be a worry, first one was a cakewalk, so I assumed the rest to be fine, and mostly they were... Stopped for lunch here: Should give an idea of water levels, no I didn't do the bomb hole, why when I have Binegar quarry I can muck about in once a month? There was some pretty deep sections even later on in the lane (north end), after one particularly sneaky one I decided enough was enough and put the snorkle up, the filter had been quite wet... This stopped me worrying a bit. Very temporary, have done it once before and just shoved it behind the wiper arm, not good when you actually need to use them. Nice lane, more challenging from a water perspective than anticipated, and longer than I expected, and definitely bumpier, but a great track. Only saw two courteous small groups of bikers and a pair D3s going south all day. No time for Elan Valley really, so wandered around the Abbey before heading back to camp.
