Which engine is this?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I just became an owner of a 1988 Defender 90. When I run the VIN through the LRWorkshop decoder it says the the engine is a 2.5 TD. However when I'm looking at photos of LR engines, it looks a lot more like the 200 TDI. In addition, on top of the head, there is a code HRC2666 and when I google that it seems to be possibly a 300 TDI. However the turbocharger is a Garrett and according to Wikipedia that turbocharger in a 300 TDI is an AlliedSignal T25. So needless to say I'm thoroughly confused as to which engine is in this truck. Any helpwith identifying the engine would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

21L is a Discovery 200Tdi engine, so still a Turbo diesel but with direct injection

I thought 21L was a 300Tdi engine?

One of the easiest ways to tell a 300Tdi engine from a 200Tdi is the belt at the front of the engine.

A 300Tdi has a single serpentine belt driving the PAS pump, alternator and water pump/fan. Whereas a 200Tdi has two separate belts, 1 drives the alternator and the coolant pump/fan, the other drives the PAS pump.

Is there a number on the engine that shows it is a 21L?

The engine code is at the start of the engine number stamped on the block - it's a little hard to see on yours.  I imagine the engine was fitted in the US after import as it would breach customs rules if shipped like that from italy.

300Tdi, the dipstick location - and its yellow, and the cast elbow for the top hose/thermostat housing. Ignore the HRCxxxx numbers, they are casting refernces and won't be found in the parts catalogues.

Just to confuse people in the future, I fitted 300tdi dipsticks to a couple of 200tdi’s many years ago.

(I actually did it to stop the usual 200tdi dipstick tube falling into the sump issue - removed the 200tdi dipstick tube, bored out the retaining union to the correct depth to accept the 300tdi dipstick / o ring. The engine casting has a bolt in the same position as the 300tdi dipstick is bolted to.)
