iron_city
Hello, I just became an owner of a 1988 Defender 90. When I run the VIN through the LRWorkshop decoder it says the the engine is a 2.5 TD. However when I'm looking at photos of LR engines, it looks a lot more like the 200 TDI. In addition, on top of the head, there is a code HRC2666 and when I google that it seems to be possibly a 300 TDI. However the turbocharger is a Garrett and according to Wikipedia that turbocharger in a 300 TDI is an AlliedSignal T25. So needless to say I'm thoroughly confused as to which engine is in this truck. Any helpwith identifying the engine would be very much appreciated. Thank you!
western
21L is a Discovery 300Tdi engine, so still a Turbo diesel but with direct injection

One of the easiest ways to tell a 300Tdi engine from a 200Tdi is the belt at the front of the engine. A 300Tdi has a single serpentine belt driving the PAS pump, alternator and water pump/fan. Whereas a 200Tdi has two separate belts, 1 drives the alternator and the coolant pump/fan, the other drives the PAS pump.
Escape
That definitely looks like a 300tdi, with the serpentine belt. A mix and match is quite common on (old) Land Rovers, so a different turbo is not a big surprise. You can be happy @iron_city, some previous owner upgraded your 90 from a TD to a 300Tdi. 😎
Landy7
21L is a Discovery 300TDI engine with EGR. 300TDI's also had Garret turbo's. ERR4802G - Garrett 300TDI Turbocharger (johncraddockltd.co.uk) The 200TDI & 300TDI turbo's are interchangeable and to my knowledge same spec. simonb
300Tdi, the dipstick location - and its yellow, and the cast elbow for the top hose/thermostat housing. Ignore the HRCxxxx numbers, they are casting refernces and won't be found in the parts catalogues.
iron_city
thank you very much for the responses, so nice to know what engine is in this now! The import papers show it came into the US from Italy. Unfortunately there is no paperwork regarding the engine swap. Thank you again for the info! Peaklander
My 1996 300TDi none EGR is a 21L from a Discovery, supplied by Turner Engineering. It used to be 16L which must have failed and was swapped in 2003 (before me).
iron_city
Is there a number on the engine that shows it is a 21L?

Yes , stamped on the block adjacent to the injector pump side just behind the timing belt housing Steve

The engine code is at the start of the engine number stamped on the block - it's a little hard to see on yours. I imagine the engine was fitted in the US after import as it would breach customs rules if shipped like that from italy.
iron_city
thank you @Eightpot. Is this the picture of the engine code?
Peaklander
Yes. The 2 is there if you look for long enough and fold your eyelids and refocus several times 😄

Just to confuse people in the future, I fitted 300tdi dipsticks to a couple of 200tdi’s many years ago. (I actually did it to stop the usual 200tdi dipstick tube falling into the sump issue - removed the 200tdi dipstick tube, bored out the retaining union to the correct depth to accept the 300tdi dipstick / o ring. The engine casting has a bolt in the same position as the 300tdi dipstick is bolted to.)
oneandtwo
200tdi dressed up to look like a 300tdi - dipstick, turbo and acoustic cover, ten years ago to the week I did this!, where did that go?
