simonr Posted December 14, 2005 Share Posted December 14, 2005 I was wondering, having never looked in to it before, what I should expect to pay for a new 12v alternator. I would like one which spits out at least 100A - and I want to buy a new one. I know I could pick a pre-shagged one from a scrappy but it's something we rely on (particularly with an auto) and I'm happy to buy new just for the security. I have also heard of new brushless alternators (with magnets on the rotor and regular field windings). Could be a good plan for the likes of us - but I've not found any for sale yet! jules Posted December 15, 2005 Share Posted December 15, 2005 I have got the original 4.2 alternator which is 100 amp but I have a spare that cost about £110 same as tony but I got it from Broklin 4x4 in Southampton. Fit the engine with a compact constant output hydraulic pump like the ZF74 used on a Milemarker, then fit an alternator in a nice warm dry place, driven at it's optimum charging speed by a small hydraulic motor (you would have to choose size of motor carefully to do this). You would then have a much more reliable alternator (out of water and mud) and one which would give full charging output at idle.... It gives me an idea of what is good value at least. [Gobbledegook] Turbo - errr no! - In most brushless dc motors they measure the reluctance in the coils to determine where the rotor is, so the motors own coils are also the sensors. I would guess it could work something like that. It may even be one set of static coils to energise the rotor and another static set to pick up the current generated - working a bit like an induction motor. In effect this is like a regular alternator but with the field and rotor coils reversed - and using half a transformer on the rotor and half on the stator to pass the current to the rotor. If you got the phase relationship right between the two coils on the rotor, you could feed DC into the stator half of the 'transformer' and it would induce an appropriate field in the rotor as a pole is passing one of the stator generator coils. I have read recently some crazy frog type alternator that not only supplies 12 V but gives 240 V AC so you can run a welder should you be so inclined. Neither lasted very long and so I'm now running the original LR one again (back to 55A!). This time decided to buy a new kicking one which will hopefully last a while. BMW one sounds interesting! I maight have to take a look at one of those, any alternator I change to has to have a vacuum pump off the back as thats where the vacuum pump is on a 2.8.
