London Low Emmission Zone

Recommended Posts

Hi, Those lovely folk at the Transport for London :huh: have sent me a letter to tell me that the old truck will be non compliant within the LEZ next year and that I should either sell it or have a filter fitted.

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of the filters?, who might fit them, what they cost, whether I could purchase and fit one myself etc

Any info would be very gratefully recieved

Cheers

Not much in those old threads about retro-fitting of DPFs, any new details?

In fact, one of those linked threads was so old that there were members called WALFY and diesel_jim! And one Will Warne's Landrover was still not finnished!!! :o :oph34r.gif

Hi Newbie,

I have the same problem with my 110. It appears I can't keep it or drive it within the new low emissions zone as from 3rd Jan 2012. (not without paying £100 per day). I've also been told a filter is about two grand. I could do with confirmation on this as I might have got it a bit wrong. It all seems a bit harsh. Landrovers last for ages so they should be really energy efficient because you don't have to replace them very often.

Cheers,

Adjuster.

Thanks for the empathy guys, I actually posted this originally in the defender forum, but the moderator moved the post to the International forum area for some reason - Fully support the moderation process, but seems strange as it is a direct technical question related to a TD5 defender and about London, so I would have thought my best bet for an answer would be the Defender forum.

Still trying to research the issue - I can find lots of people whinging and lots of general chit chat, but I haven't as yet found any sensible suggestions.

I phoned a couple of the LEZ fitters and as mentioned, they haven't fitted anything to a defender.

So I'm starting to pull my hair out :o and fear the worst for the old Truck :(

Hi Def90

As Western says, there's lots of info in the two threads already started plus links to info elsewhere.

Also look here for info: TFL Website

If your Defender is registered as a utility/light 4x4 or commercial vehicle, you are stuffed unless it runs on petrol or has the costly filter fitted.

Options:

1. Fit the particulate filter to make it compliant;

2. Convert it to a v8/petrol;

3. Move outside the M25 (the LEZ covers most of the area inside the M25) and don't drive your landy back in;

4. Become Prime Minister and take us out of Europe.

It's a jip but there's not much else that can be done about it I'm afraid. Some people have tried for reclassification of their vehicle with the DVLA but I'm not really sure what difference this has made and if like me you have a hardtop and you don't want to change it, this won't be an option.

Regards,

John

Its a bit of a no win situation unless your willing to pay £100 every time you go in the zone or cough up 2-3k for a filter and thats if you can find someone to fit it. i live just on the edge of the M25 and my modified tdi 90 was non compliant, it meant for me i was going to be very limited on were i could drive my truck with LEZ cameras now poping up within a few miles of my house. as much as i loved my 90 and had put my heart and soul into building her in the end it was one of the main reasons i decided to sell it a month ago, i now smoke about in a 4ltr V8 Disco thats compliant :)

i can see there being a lot of non compliant Landys being put up for sale in the coming months, and unless a buyer comes from well outside London i can see there prices hitting the floor and being very hard to sell:angry:

I think you are not too far from me Suggs. The LEZ starts not 1/2 a mile from my house. I have to go down to Southend fairly often and won't even be able to drive down to the A12/A127 and will have to go the long way round through Brentwood (not that I mind too much, it's a nicer drive to be honest).

I refuse to sell my truck though. I'm just not going to go into London anymore.

yeah im close by mate just nr Lakeside, i did think long and hard about it selling and there were other reasons why i decided to sell my 90 so have no regrets at all. i was lucky as sold the 90 within 2 days of being up for sale and for a very good price (it is a great truck). i bought the wife a 54 plate Saab 93 Aero convertible with the money and i now have her D2 V8 ES as my toy which im going to be modding soon, along the lines of a G4..

I don't run a diesel LR so I'm not affected, but at the risk of being the prophet of doom I suspect the long term outlook is that eventually other UK cities will follow the capital's approach & introduce restrictions themselves, as has already happened in Europe.

Of all the companies listed by TFL as 'approved' fitter NONE have ever fitted one to a Land Rover.

Apart from the brown envelope hoops to jump through to gain TFL approval, there should be a business opportunity there for somebody as a LR specialist installer if there will be hundreds of Land Rovers affected

It's not a cost effective modification so people are not prepared to pay someone to do it. I know I'm not.

The cost of either getting a new engine or a filter fitted is bad enough, but then the general condition of the vehicle has to be taken into consideration and you have to ask yourself if it is worth spending the money? :(:huh:

In my case the gearbox was whining more than my wife, the transfer box needed constant topping up and the non galv body cappings were suffering from "creeping lightness" (rust!)and despite the chassis being sound I couldn't justify spending the money on the 300tdi.

To be honest I doubt if there is any chance of TfL changing their minds or LRs being reclassified. I sold my 300tdi in Feb as I believe that prices will decline once the LEZ bites.

I was sorry to see the 300tdi go, but the TD5 that I bought to replace it is great!

Just had a phone call from Landrover Customer services, they say that all pre 1998 Defenders regardless of wheather they are SW or hardtops, factory fitted or not are will be subject to LEZ in 2012,

Apparrently DVLA has told landrover that it has reclassified all pre1998 as being Light 4x4 utilty regardless of how it came out of the factory.

NOT HAPPY

This is the contact number i had 08705 000500, maybe someone else can ring to double check that is what they are saying.

They are closed now till Monday, I'll give it a go next week maybe they will be able to give a contact at the DVLA to see what the reasoning is.

Has anyone with a pre-1998 Defender tried running the reg through the TfL compliance check?

It still says compliant (it's an SW) but always has the disclaimer on it saying they are updating so I don't really trust it..... Also this sounds like a new decision so another reason to think it won't have been updated....

Maybe I'll have to get myself a ropey 300tdi disco for when I have to go into London .....

Just tried the LEZ number plate checker today, and it now says that i am NOT affected by the LEZ.

Maybe this is because mine is a factory fitted CSW

Vehicle: M80* ***

Date Status

18 Jun 2011 to 02 Jan 2012 Not Subject to LEZ

According to our records this vehicle is not subject to the Low Emission Zone and is not required to meet the Low Emission Zone standards this time.

03 Jan 2012 to onwards Not Subject to LEZ

According to our records this vehicle is not subject to the Low Emission Zone and is not required to meet the Low Emission Zone standards this time.

Hopefully this will stay like this and not change, This is the first time since the number platechecker website was launched that it states that i am Compliant (ie i can drive into london with no fine) :))))
