lockers

If you buy just a locker, it will come as the diff centre only. You will need to transfer the crown wheel from your existing diff, then fit the centre and crown wheel in to your diff housing, set the backlash etc. Many people offer this as a service, you could speak to Nige (HybridFromHell).

What do you use the vehicle for? You don't have to change anything, but once you have a locker you will be able to deliver enough torque to a rear shaft to twist/break it.

ok cheers for the first answer.

i use the truck mainly for off road use and road use mainly getting to and from play site and little greenlane, i was going to change the rear shaft when i get a locker i was more worried about if i needed to upgrade the front cv and shafts too.

wont be for a while yet.

The weight of your right foot will determine the likelihood of you breaking axle components, not just the locker itself.

In some situations a locker enables you to be more gentle as there is less need to use momentum to cross obstacles. For example in a cross-axle you can use a lower speed as you will have more traction. Obviously there will be more stress on the loaded shaft, but this is where the lighter right foot comes into it and the benefit of the traction is felt.

There will be other situations where a locker puts more strain on the shafts, of course. Personally, I'd fit the locker and then upgrade to HD shafts when you break one :)

I quite liked the detriot i had in my rangerover. but i had mine in a salisbury, which i believe is a different type to the ones for rover axle.

I think the packaging on mine called it a detroit no-spin.

I found it to be perfect absolutly transprarent on the road and full traction off road, but i only did a short test drive in mine 5,500 miles in 3 weeks ^_^

I have done a few test drives in mine, including the one that dirtydiesel did. These days I just ignore what people say about them, even you Nigel!

To be fair, the car is understeered with the power on, but I am completely used to it now. Interestingly, although people say a detroit locker in the back makes the car understeered, this is not the case; It is the Detroit true trac in the front that does this. When I once removed the front prop, you dont notice anything, as Dan says you would never know it is there.

I have a detroit locker in the back of the 110 - Salisbury axle. Completely transparent on the road and excellent off.

There is a new version out now that is better. In the year or so I've had it fitted I have not once had the famous Detroit bang.

The price of it plus the super simple install makes it a no-brainer in my book.

Detroits are good, stong, ashlockers IMHO are better

For the flick of a switch you can decide not the locker

In hands down competition a Ashlocker beats it on every count apart from being auto, more expensive and needing an air supply and time to fit

The above it yes a tad liong but honest

If you can afford the extra, fit it time wise, I still say Ashlocker is the best value for money

If you can't then a detroit is not a daft option by any means and is hugely stong, but for my money I would still say save and buy ashlocker

HOWEVER

Whichever you buy fit uprated shafts at the same time :)

Ok cheers, I have to save before I get one so ill see if I can save abit extra.

How much does it roughly cost to get the locker in the caseing

Depends on whether you can do it yourself?

One of these http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=260

need one of these too http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/T-Max-4x4-ADVENTURER-12v-Portable-HD-Air-Compressor-/330459651101?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D11%26meid%3D3762801434711601904%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D1005%26rk%3D2%26sd%3D170540215200%26

Plus a small air receiver and switching etc, so another £50 for sundries there

All in DIY probably £650 ish +/-

Seen this which may be better though? http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=259

And at £295 is less than half the price of air lockers, fit and forget, DIY it in for less than £350 delivered........
