  1. I'd like to publicly state, for the record, that I haven't been stuck for six months now! So there!! Of course, it might help if I had actually driven the damned thing since Tony's birthday!! Anyhow Dicky, you're not exactly squeeky clean now are you......
  2. Nope, the ends will lie on top and beneath the bumper allowing two runs of fillet weld about 75mm long, like this: Even with a teeny 3mm fillet weld the recovery point will be worth about 15te (before safety factors and assuming the bar is stronger, which it isn't - about 5te.) They will be positioned in line with the chassis rails so the bumper will have two stiffening gussets in the C section too. Two of them on the front should see me straight.
  3. As the Bishtail is off the road at the moment, I thought I'd set about improving my winch bumper. When I had it made I asked for these pin and jaw recovery points to be fitted (it was all the rage back then) Unfortunately, they aren't the best as they are fiddly to use and you cannot get a winch hook behind them as the space is too small. I decided that I would replace them with a pair of simple loops welded to the bumper. So yesterday I set off to my local scrappy / steel stock holder for a rummage in the bins. 10 minutes and six quid later I was the proud owner of 3m of 25 x 5 EA ( to stiffen the winch mounting plate that I have bent but that's another story) a metre of thick walled tube, some thick plate and a fist full of round bar As I don't have a vice, or even anything remotely robust enough to bolt a vice to, I had to do a bit of lateral thinking. My £10 workmate is made of Emmental so I took my steel plate, thick walled tube and a lardy Range Rover and did this: Throw in a bit of old gas pipe and some brute force over ignorance and you get this: You have to do this in stages to get a good radius and keep withdrawing the gas pipe as you bend it I needed an internal radius of 100mm to fit the bumper. The first two were a bit small but the next two weren't bad…. B) Now all I have to do is cut off the old ones and find some kind soul who will weld on the new ones………
  4. Good luck with that James. I hope you have more success on the insurancefront than I did.... You can put me on the list too. What's the format? Singles / pairs....?
  5. Front only on green for me please (LR green of course ) If people do want names, how about Forum names rather than actual names? I know some people use their name but most don't...?
  6. Can't do this months as I 'm away in Scotland, but I am slowly psyching myself up to joing CSW............
  7. Our resident Beardy Armchair driver!! 21 again eh Dave? Many happy returns etc etc.
  8. Well it was worth the wait Andy - a fantastic piece of work. I notice you've calculated the approach angle based on the 44's then......
  9. Dave, If you're mounting feet forward either use extra thick (a la Nige ) plate for the front face of the bumper or add in a return lip. 5 or 6mm plate will bend. Ask me how I know..... mutter mutter.......
  10. Why not????? It's bluddy obvious someone's being beating seven shades of £$%£ out of it so you may as well have a go too!!
  11. Well that seals it then - Tonk's got no chance!!!!!
  12. As Les says, I think we need to clarify if we are condsidering EB's 110 before or after he had a loss of reasoning and fitted some flat bits..... . I reckon before that loss of sanity Will would win hands down.
  13. Oooooh gooody.... Off to buy some Kleenex in anticipation.....
  14. Tony C should have some piccies and a tale to tell when a KERR + shackle went wrong for him,,,,,,,,, ISTR that he dented his spare wheel / rear door quite badly which he reckons saved his bacon.
  15. No worries, I only remebered it because I had something to contribute for a change!
  16. Al, In answer to your Q about gearbox rebuilds etc, they tend to go in the international forum, but when the thread has run its course it gets moved by that nice chap Mr White90 into the tech archive to be preserved for ever. That's why I think the tech archive should be lit up in bright lights so we'll all notice it more and go look in it before asking a question that has the answer clearly given in a thread in the tech archive.
  17. See THIS THREAD from earlier....... and try THIS LINK
  18. I tend to agree with Tony, but I think the tech archive doesn't get enough press being tucked away down the bottom of the list of forums. Maybe we should put more emphasis on the tech archive rather than adding in more forums that may or may not get visited?
  19. A certain Beardy armchair driver swears by 245 / 75 IIRC. He drives a diesel Rangie.......
  20. Where's SteveG when you need him... Steve was full of praise for his P38 (4.6 V8). I think his only gripe was that it is a tad lardy (i.e. wide) for green laning. For an overland trip it would be fantastic, none of this slumming it ina 110, as long as you take a testbook with you....
  21. Geoff, do you really need 150A? I recently replaced my alternator because it was knackered and found out it was 65A!!!!!! If you take into account how often I use my winch (Quiet Mark90!!! ), I never had a charging problem. The alternator just died from being full of crud and having bad connectors on the back. I upgraded to an 85A alt that runs all the electrikery in the Rangie (and twin batteries). Recon unit £60 fitted with uprated wiring too from my local alternator specialist. Just my 2p.
  22. Is your daughter missing a "My Little Pony"....... Only kidding - looks impressive - are the leaf springs on the cart wood or metal?
  23. Not wanting to sound like a cracked record (or a "big CD" as my niece calls them ), but give Phil Gordon at PG Winches a call. He will diagnose over the phone and source any bits you may need. No affiliation you understand, just a satisfied customer BTW, hows the re-bob coming along? Any news to report.....?
  24. Questions, questions... Here are some answers...... I was saying Forum invite only as a way of avoiding getting a bunch of pr!cks turning up and causing havoc as I have experienced on many occasions at pay and play days. Of course if it was organised under the auspices of a club then it would be open to their members. Getting a wider audience is all well and good, but as I said above, life is far more enjoyable if the people attending are known to be reliable. I have been to several of Paul's excellent B) events in the past which were exactly what we would like to reproduce. I understand one of the reasons he gave up was because of concerns over insurance. Tony - I understand where you are coming from, but I wasn't intending of affiliating the Forum to any club, just trying to find the most appropriate club for Forumeers to join so they don't have to join half a dozen different clubs each time an event is proposed. I think the Forum's independence is its greatest asset. AWDC sounds interesting - I shall peruse their website.....
  25. Yep I'd agree totally. Don't know where they get insurance, I shall investigate. Only problem I can foresee with J33P is that the sort of stuff we like to do off road is quite different to what they enjoy so they may frown on us blatantly using their club for insurance whilst not really bringing much to it for the J33P members to benefit from.
