  1. head gasket blown between cylinders? rings? injectors if theyre blocked or spraying a bad pattern, even not atomising and just pouring fuel will not be cured by injector cleaner. i would take them to your local diesel injection engineer. mine checked them for free while i waited. if theyre screwed you'll know, if not, youve eliminated them. if im honest, i would not take many things on just someone's say so. if you can, get things you feel are possible checked by someone who can tell you for definite!
  2. right, there should be some boxes in there. this one is a flat black one right at the back with two multiplugs in it. what you need to do is remove the two multiplugs from the unit, and using a screwdriver, carefully prise the end piece out where the plugs plugged in. with this bit of plastic out of the way, the board within will slide out easily and you can inspect it and repair it. once repaired, simply slide it back in, replace the plastic end cap and plug back in. my dad's was like this for years before i found out what to do. luckily mine's a 3dr so i dont have this problem http://www.discoweb.org/window/index.htm
  3. marauding innocent members of the public and cheating them out of their hard earned cash in the name of charity on the 21st and whenever i get time, timing belt, clearances and a service on the disco on the 24th or as soon as the parts appear, boxing day and on fitting me christmas prezzies and getting it ready for kirton on the 29th. then a mate's 21st party the same night. new years at my mates, 21st birthday on the 2nd january, and then a roof rack and some boot storage to fabricate.
  4. i take it you're running both pieces of software concurrently and they wont share and play nice? gpsgate is your friend nige! usb is a type of serial connection, it's what the s stands for so dont let that worry you if you do get fed up with that particular gps receiver, id be happy to send you some beer tokens for it unless its being a pain cos theres something wrong with it!
  5. is it td5s that have two ecu maps, one for low range, one for high, and the switch gets jammed or dirty or something and saps loads of power?? and there's another switch on the clutch pedal that cuts power? or am i getting confused and it's all on the puma?? whoops. you said air in fuel... ignore me. i'll read the whole thing in future
  6. if the generally suggested cabling for a 8274 is 35sqmm therefore running a single motor, and this guy is running 2 motors!!! dont know if some people havent noticed that the maths is quite easy. 2x35 is 70 im no authority on winch motors and cabling sizes but I personally dont see it being over the top.
  7. +1 for knipex seem to grip things absolutely nothing else will
  8. i agree, itd be brilliant for burgers bit concerned sausages might fall through the gaps though
  9. right, ordering parts: belt ETC8550 tensioner ERR2530 Idler pulley ETC8560 front cover gasket ERR1195 dust seal ETC4154 camshaft front oil seal ERR6490 water pump gasket ERR388 hope this is correct. i figure while im in there i might as well do the lot also ordered inlet/exhaust manifold gasket and rocker gasket. have the rest of service parts. will do the manifolds just in case (cant see any obvious problem, and i think my clearances could do with setting) just noticed paddocks do a kit excluding the two seals. will do that.
  10. why are there only four? do the plugs not heat the combustion chambers like any other diesel? which one gets left out?!
  11. thanks dude, i shall check that out as well!! however i just found out from receipts that although the cambelt is due as it was done 61k ago (this i knew), the 61k was 10 years ago and the idler and tensioner seem never to have been done!!! driving back home to do it is going to be a butt clenching experience whether it's the problem or not!
  12. ok, dont know if i mentioned this before but it does it on acceleration but if i drop a gear during engine braking, it does not. would a cambelt be under increased load under acceleration? it's this stops once the engine reaches 2500rpm-ish (on boost?) that's bugging me the only time i can listen for it is when im driving the damned thing, so im sorry i cant pinpoint it aurally any more than i am doing jim
  13. still havent found the culprit. had the nice oily inlet pipes off and cant find any splits, checked the belts and bearings, all seem fine. not happy now. i cant believe its not something that has come up regularly before!?
  14. stops them freezing up in cold weather, and lets you spray tbh not much warmed water/antifreeze mix on the screen clearing it. i think cracking it is a bit lot melodramatic. they work well and are fitted to tonnes of cars, if its a possibility, i say go for it! i for one get annoyed when mine freeze
  15. yeah especially since youve been running wvo. it doesnt necessarily block the filter itself but tends to carry the carp out the tank well and mean much more frequent filter changes are necessary! not to mention it CAN break the filters down too. that said, injectors have tiny tiny tolerances. i took a set of injectors to be checked once and they were all knackered. 2 blocked, two not atomising the fuel, just dripping it into the bores but the engine was actually running, not too much smoke, and not lumpy at all, just down on power. having them checked costs nothing. if you're concerned, get them checked.
  16. that's also electric winch current... wouldnt draw any more forseeably than most winches on the market way i see it. strangely the electrical power would generally come from a 'battery'. this is often a second 'battery' which charges between uses. at least batteries powered electric motors when i was at primary school maybe physics HAS changed
  17. easy then! make new bracket! job jobbed
  18. am i the only one who immediately saw vapor and wondered how many will get bought and sit on workshop benches unfitted
  19. if it were belts etc though les, it would happen whether the vehicle was moving or stationary surely. this only occurs when im making the engine work. accelerating, pulling up hills etc. I can rev freely all day long stood still and cannot re-create the sound whatsoever, but yeah my belts are pretty new, the pullies didnt seem too polished and theyre all nice and tight thanks mate. I'll give them a good looking over! i suppose theyre getting on for 14 years old so could well be!
  20. someone must have come across this before?? i darent drive the thing in case im destroying things, not to mention it sounds embarrassing too haha!
  21. only does it when engine is pulling the wheels though, i can sit it there ticking over, revving it whatever when not in gear and not a peep out of anything
  22. hi guys. had a squealing noise coming from somewhere fairly front central of the disco for a while now, and was losing my alternator and power steering when going through anything more than a deep puddle, but i tightened the belts up which cured the slippage but i still have the squeal. it occurs when i put my foot down and accelerate, up to about 2500rpm where it will stop. it also occurs when pulling up a hill at constant speed. it doesnt feel like the clutch is 'slipping' any amount per se, but would it scream like this? i know my release bearing is tired, it makes a wonderful rough sound on tickover out of gear when just stood (or is that my gearbox? only 17k old!!) help! it's driving me mad and knowing most things on discos it's happened a thousand times before. oh yes, L reg 200tdi cheers jim
  23. with a bit of fettling you can just about away with 5 1/2" speakers in the front doors as well but it's tight, and i dont have the part number to hand but land rover do a set of A-pillar covers with a tweeter already in each which hopefully (did last time for me) plug straight into wiring already in the pillar
  24. what is the current requirement of your particular winch(es)?
