  1. the solenoid is a pretty easy piece of kit to take apart and clean. No idea just how much benefit it has, and there are various suggestion about what oils or not to use on them. Worth getting some decent duty wire to do a new cable from solenoid to starter motor, I think that was the main cause of problems on the 2 I have had a apart. oh, just remembered some v important advice, which might sound obvious but caught me out.. if you decide to test it, the piston bit flys in with a heartstopping speed, and will also shoot out again under the spring with a good bit of force, so make sure that it's not pointing at you, or a window etc. I did it and the thing shot across the cab of the 90 leaving me feeling pretty foolish.
  2. Complaint entered "I am writing to complain about the article using the phrase "But are they really the 4x4s of home entertainment?" and "So does that make these sleek new TVs the gas-guzzling 4x4s of home entertainment?" I appreciate this is an opinion piece, Sean Coughlan is to be congratulated on a good piece of tabloid newspaper style reporting, all issues and no substance, however like the BBC appears to have decided to object to 4x4's I am deciding to complain about discrimination and demonising statements such as these. At lease Sean Coughlan doesn't pretend to actually be a reporter and write news, and I do hope his career at the Sunday Sport takes off." To be fair it's an opinion piece and he can use statements like these, but they are terribly tabloid for the BBC The more people that complain the more chance there is of something being done. To complain use the contact us link at the bottom of the webpage.
  3. I think the police have to luck in and get in the region of a tracker, so it can be hit and miss. comment I trot out each time, ebay sell mobile phone based kits so that you can do geolocation yourself, I know in rural areas the coverage will be pants, but in places like docks or inner city lock ups and pikey camps the moby signal will be fine and you can find your truck... Of course if it is so good why have i still not got around to spending the £40 and why is my BigUn not on my 90 back home...
  4. could it be a shagged feul solenoid? When the disco stalls (my bad usually as i forgot i have left it in gear) it sometimes will NOT restart and just turns over. I have to turn it off complete for a few minutes and then it will fire right back up. happened a few times now. if the soleniod is warm it might just move a bit easier, perhaps not opening fully when cold. dangerous suggestion: could you try heating the solenoid portion only, say pouring boiling water over the pump, at a guess about 4 or 5 kettles might get there, or perhaps a blow torch. ... got that looks like a bloody stupid suggestion, but i'll leave it see how many comments it gets
  5. you need glow plugs? the 90 starts without them, maybe a few seconds if less than zero. (no relay on it) The disco starts easily no matter how much or little i let the glow plugs go. Checked the battery to ensure it's getting enough crank? As to where the relay is, i thought on the 200tdi it was on the bulkhead behind the engine, but total guess from memory
  6. that's the puppy, good ol NTC6868L, just a wee tube that makes you wonder WTF it will do for you. I replaced mine because it started to leak. Suggest you have a look at something like these, cheap and may make a big difference to performance http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll...rake+bias+valve
  7. Discovery have a bias valve, pressure reducing valve PRC something, cylinder off a t piece under master cylinder on what is left of your inner wing. About £30 for a replacement (did it a couple of months ago). T piece sits on the line for the right hand caliper and the output from the pressure reducer feeds rear axle. My 90 has a disco rear axle, and even with all my tools and carp, the back is still liable to lock up. I don't know if the disco valve would help to be honest though, for the sameish price you buy a aleterable valve though which I would expect you can get to the right pressure. It has the same thingy as in the picture, which appears to do naff all to help. Having said all that, do the swap, lot less trouble than drums I think
  8. I ran my 200tdi defender with very little exhaust for quite a while. This led me to a number of conclusions: 1) people thouoght it sounded good 2) it actually wasn't that loud with a single small silencer 3) it does seem to let the turbo spin up a bit better now i have a standard system back on All the side exit systems run a single box so there is no reason you can't bin the rear box. all IMHO got that PITA bend in the pipe on the disco though, if you salvage that it should be a doable job to route the pipe elsewhere after the axle. EDIT: (3) I mean I think it span up quicker with little exhaust, not that the std exhaust is better. Geoff - when my exhaust cracked off just in front the gearbox on the downpipe i did run without any exhaust or even a lot of pipe. it was getting on for antisocial, more tube may have helped, it was also a requirement to drive with the window open because the fumes were entering the cab...
  9. Well, on the trip back from Malvern my £500 discovery 200tdi 1991 passed the 200,000 mile mark, I have done about 6 to 7 thousand of them in the last 4 months and the thing has been outstanding. Repair bill so far has been: 1 clutch bearing (old one shagged and whining when i bought it) new slave and master clutch, though not needed, the clutch had seized onto the flywheel while I had it open doing the bearing - just took a good rag around the block to sort in the end 1 brake pressure reducing valve which was leaking 1 service 1 new rear wiper Jobs to do: Pre-Mot before Feb - will fail on sills, rear floor maybe and possibly inner wings Another service Cam belt (probably be going to the Les since I pass through Swindon) Change (actually, probably just fill) gearbox oils and others Optional extras if it passes though Mot with little fuss: New stereo and speakers new seats (drivers is v scruffy) goddam rear load cover finally fog lamps and some brighter headlamp bulbs Great car - when this dies think I'll buy another disco
  10. SimonB might be able to help in a few weeks, I am about to give him my old pump to recon (or try). He already does alternators so it is v similar process. Handy tip - if you can get a pump that is correct on the front then the CAN will come off the back and be swapped for yours so that the inlet pipe is in the right spot for your motor. (if that makes sense)
  11. I'm pretty sure that is the same vehicle, flipping between the pictures there are many same items, not just overall shape. mach 5s have gone and new mud flaps but pretty much the same other than that.
  12. Nicks ARB D3 whinch bumper was £1000+ (and then plus fitting) when i spoke to him - so the rear wheel thingy aint gonna be cheap is my guess. I guess it is a specialsed low volume product so you pay more if you want it. ce la vie
  13. I'd lay a bet the frog island can make or do make one. don't know if that helps, you'd probably have to email them or phone. Nick Jennings had them fit his ARB winch bumper to his disco 3 so it would be a good first call.
  14. We were in elmpt in may... you are probably looking for www.bafma-online.co.uk for the driver training.
  15. 8mm ally ???? Thought it looks like some less blingy steel making the winch frame underneath.
  16. If you saw the first version I don't think so, it used the headline "increased charge for 4x4s" or something similar and then had a few more references to 4x4 in the article, along with the real information that it was aimed at emission levels. I can only assume they had a number of complaints and changed it. It might as well have said "increased congestion charge for blue cars" since it had about as much relevance to 4x4ness. BBC news is really starting to p***s me off with this slant on the stories. I'd suggest submitting a complaint about the earlier headline used. EDIT: In fact I have just submitted an official complaint: "Why did this story originally headline as increased charges for 4x4s when the content clearly indicated that the drive train had nothing to do with the charges? It seems to attempt to justify by saying "The daily charge for vehicles in carbon emissions band G, which includes some 4x4s, is to rise to £25 from 2009." I'm sure it includes some blue cars as well, why not have a headline of "Blue cars to pay increased charges", it would be about as relevant. Is the BBC website a tabloid site, providing spin on stories with your own agenda or a balanced, believable news source? Articles like these and others in recent months lead me to believe that there is some agenda against 4x4s being supported by the BBC with such reporting. It is clear that you yourselves considered the headline inappropriate since it was later replaced by "Polluting cars face charge rise". I'd suggest you excercise appropriate editorial control and if a member of staff has thier own agenda they leave it at the door of the BBC when they arrive for work." It doesn't take long so if everyone can get around to complaining about this and all other articles with inappropriate spin about 4x4s perhaps at least the BBC will stop providing a mouthpiece for this BS
  17. there is a diesel place in fareham (farlington) which could probably do some of this.
  18. i did posting ages ago where i did it with a crane and took the box off. Top tip - make sure you use decent straps to support the box. I haven't had a tdi engine out or forward, but I think you will still be doing the hard work of getting the bell housing bolts undone from underneath, and guiding the box on (despite me thinking it was gonna kill me) is probably easier than guiding the engine on. When I do the defenders clutch I plan to move the box back or drop it down (probably the latter, I think the input shaft oil seal has gone)
  19. you all might be interested to see this page on the bbc site http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/A1175582 might add a comment
  20. How about "married" class, as in I am or want to stay married and therefore haven't got all the extra goodies on this vehicle yet. "Box Class" as in straight out of the box "Authentic" ?
  21. Could have been ramblers, if you got a large group of them they might have tried dragging it out of the way, fuelled by the anger of a way being blocked by a motorised vehicle? Oh how I wish that to be true and a picture to exist.
  22. Sounds good, even if REME just let you in the shop to do some work it would help. Squaddies are usually looking to earn some dosh on the side so you may find someone offers to do some work for you if needed. Do they still do car clubs? I work for MoD and all the car clubs on the sites I am on have disappeared, probably H&S knowing our place. Drop arm bull joint is typical for going, I think uk MOTs mainly look for play in the drop arm joint and turn a blind eye to any perishing of the boot unless it is really bad.
  23. bloody good area sidbury hill - did you drive the great big slopes to the south? I was putting the 90 up that tank ramp too - scary angle! If your club ever needsd any help for marshalling out there i and a few others woulld usually be up for it, in fact HBLRO would probably be interested
  24. I think that one is fair, if I said sports car, you would probably think low lean thing, not a range rover sport etc etc If you said transit type van it could be any of this big boxy things. Everytime I see a bunch of people on an overhead brige I always cringe a little and wonder if something will be dropped off these days - biggest problem is that they are very difficult to catch, unless you start putting cctv on every bridge over a motorway.
  25. suggest you use the contact us link and complain as I just did. The piece is slanted with a viewpoint, the 4x4 has no bearing on the incident from the facts given and I have pointed out that reporting such as that is not news it is propaganda. Perhaps getting all those on the forum and the others to complain everytime this happens will make some difference. Mr Angry of Fareham
