  1. are there really that many 30 mile stretches of road with accident blackspots all the way along them??? not that the camera's are revenue earners in any way of course.....
  2. interesting points on the costs involved. i worked it out a couple of weeks ago for my 3.5, over the 6000 miles or so i have done in it, i reckon i have used about 2800 litres of gas, approx 616 gallons, and at an average of 52p/litre, thats £1456. Now if i had bought that much petrol, at say 105p/litre, that's £2940 - a saving of £1484. Even with the reduced efficency of LPG over petrol, i have still saved a huge amount. to put it another way, it cost me £25 of LPG to get as far as Swindon the other week with a trailer on the back, it cost nearly £60 in petrol to get back.....
  3. late model ford scorpios used them, and IIRC they are quite easy to remove and wire up. you can pick up a complete 2.9 v6 cosworth for a couple of hundred sheets, break it and sell the engine on for anything upto £400. job done
  4. why not use a quick ratio streering box from somewhere like bearmach?
  5. i quote; When th ecolumn switch is moved to the main beam position, current is supplied to fuse 13 and fuse 14 of the passenger compartment fuse box. Both are connected by blue/white wires. Purple wire is for the flash function.
  6. that sounds ok to me, put a switch in the feed wire to the relay, same kind of setup as fog lamps, then you can choose if you want to have the spots illuminate with main beam or not.
  7. straight swap over of the whole axle is easiest
  8. years ago my brother had a car alarm that would send a signal to a pocket sized receiver if the car was tampered with in any way. the biggest problem with using a net based camera system is having a net connection in the first place. a dvr system with motion detector start would be best concealed inside a secure cabinet, hidden in the building. at least you would capture anyone breaking in - but would still end up with stuff gone walkies. something like this >clicky< would be ideal
  9. did you check the push rods? could be a bent one in there somewhere
  10. i will be helping someone to do this into an 86 defender soon. the bases are different and need to be removed from the disco seats, and then a frame making up to fit them to the defender seat box. unless you get some universal seat frames from a bucket type seat.
  11. don't think WD40 will do it much good TBH. Not much can be done to waterproof an alternator AFAIK (someone correct me if wrong) may be worth investigating the new breed of alternators that have a clutch pulley on them? could be wired up to disengage when you go wading. otherwise it's finding something to encase the alternator in, or shield it well to prevent splash back
  12. ....especially as there is no cambelt on the 3.5..... definately clutch related if the engine speed goes up, but the road speed doesn't. the fact that it does it uphill with a full load on points to clutch slip too.
  13. Ok Guys n Gals, where would be the best place to get a wide angle prop for the front of a TD5 defender? Have had a browse round the usual suspects without much luck. Alternatively, has anyone successfully fitted a Disco II front prop to a Defender (it's a 90 BTW) Cheers all
  14. the perfectly named lenser torch lenser torch
  15. the power of steam and compression can do lovely things to alloy heads. most recently seen that on a certain French petrol engine
  16. you will need the rear lights with bulbholders from 200 series disco to do this, straightforward swap that just needs a few wires connecting up to do the job
  17. Right, after dragging a twin axle Ifor Williams plant trailer to Reading and back last week to fetch some eBay goodies, i realised that the old girl is a bit low on power for towing. Now i know that the 3.5 v8 wasn't exactly a fire breathing beast to begin with, and after 130k is probably a bit tired. But, is there anything i can do to boost my power levels a bit? I also know that LPG does drop the power a bit, (it runs nearly exclusively on the stuff - only a squirt of liquid gold to start it) but sat at 50-60mph it is really annoying, as it's right between 4th & 5th gear, and on the motorway, it's a right royal PITA. It's also worth noting that when i dragged a scrap Disco back from Abergavenny-ish to Hereford-ish ona twin axle Ifor Williams 16ft trailer, she cruised at 55-60mph no problem. Could it just be the plant trailer is heavier than the 16 footer? Either way - I need more poowerrr (Megasquirt/Turbo's etc would be nice - but i am talking realistic here) Let the suggestions begin...... Thank You
  18. i would be inclined to getting the fuses and relays checked first. i had a similar problem on a car once, ABS lamp would extinguish after the POST had finished, then would randomly go on and off when operating the brakes. Was a right PITA to find the fault, eventually turned out to be a hairline crack in a fuse, and as the current was flowing it was causing odd happenings.
  19. nice sharp knife type implement run along the join between the panels, IIRC from looking through Rave. it's detailed in the body repair section on there
  20. should have waited till monday when the new offer sheet starts....
  21. Bearmach do a halogen conversion kit, with a built in side lamp (standard capless bulb) as well as the "cool" halo ring. IIRC they are about £25 for the pair.
  22. it could be that the lpg system needs readjusting to compensate for the colder weather, depends on what type of system it is. at the beginning of "summer" when we had a warm snap, my lpg economy dropped through the floor, about 10mpg, i had the system tweaked slightly, and it went back up to 17mpg (3.5 v8 manual disco)
  23. Dare i say it - but check out your local Partco (or preferably Express Factors) as the new Mega Wise Buys leaflet for Novemver/December has waste oil heaters on offer - and you can pay weekly. For a manual ignition 80,000 BTU heater, with 3l/hour consumption you are looking at £1049 plus vat (5 year lease at £5.51/week) Blatant plugging i know - but they are damn good bits of kit. If you can strike a deal with your local garage to take the waste oil, then you are quids in.
  24. it was blizzard conditions tuesday night from Swindon to Reading on the M4, lovely stuff. Hay Bluff looks white too ATM
