Silverstone classic

Recommended Posts

As some of you know a certain bunch of nutters managed to get a lap of the circuit last year. Those same idiots are going back again this year though sadly a lap seems to be unlikely. But if your going pop over and say hi we have a stand on the outfield side of the bridge. Look out for a 130 ambulance, a 110 (doesn't look like I'll have the ibex registered in time) and an excessively noisy 101.

Oh we did! :D

I know posting porn is agin the rules but I've curated a few candid shots from the weekend - those of a nervous disposition may need to look away. One pic might even include Miketomcat's knees, for which I can only apologise.

Marshals very tidy Stage 1 V8 - we had a good chat with them last year but didn't get the chance this year.

What happens if you find a very rusty e-Type and a ginormous turbo

Classic touring cars, love the big Jaaaag

IMGP3158.JPG

e-Types, Cobras, Astons, Lotus, Ferrari, Stingrays, Mustangs... if there is a sexier starting grid I've not seen it.

This has not gone entirely to plan.

Can-Am and the such like, sounding good.

Didn't go this year but saw you last year, keep saying I'm going to take the kids for all the freebies :D

Aye, the free funfair is a nice touch - a couple of our group had multiple rides on the big wheel!

It is a fantastic event, we went a couple of years back and were amazed at how open the event is with access to all the pits and the pit lane you can stand right on it, health and safety hasn't caught up with it thankfully. Literally could stand next to pit crews as they were tinkering pre race.

Loved the classic mini's hooning around having a great time amongst the other classic e types americal muscle and all sorts

Aye, it's brilliant being able to nose into all the cars in the pits - more than a few times I've seen kids being allowed to sit in an F1 car for a photo and stuff like that.

I haven't been to Silverstone classic for a lot of years but it looks like it is just as good as it always has been! Went to Goodwood festival of speed for the first time this year and that was equally fantastic

Had an SD1 as my "other company car" for many years and the V8 on LPG is very, very noce.

However, as with all BL cars, it dissolved eventually. Road behavior in the wet was entertaing for me but less so for passengers..

If I could find a diesel one.....

With a booked club stand its about £200 for two people. This includes; entrance with a display car for 3 days, you must be there from 10-5 but racing doesn't finish till at least 6 sat it's 9. Camping at woodlands site we stay Thursday night through till Sunday (there is cheaper sites but woodlands is easy).

Entrance does cover everything infield, paddocks, pits, grandstands, fun fair the lot. Access is everywhere literally. This year I took all my own food the whole 3 days I spent £4 on a bacon roll that I didn't need but wanted so much:ph34r:

Loved those pics of the racing, I had no idea ..... used to go to Goodwood until it got stupid expensive and crowded.

That's why I love it, it's got most of the metal that's at Goodwood (and a lot that isn't), they have proper races not just a quick whizz up a hill, it's an affordable weekend and not crowded as it's built to take an F1 GP crowd.

Worst that happens is a couple of the grandstands get busy during the most popular races, and the traffic gets a bit busy at peak arriving / kicking out time.

One of my dads friends brother in law managed to put his classic Ferrari backwards through a barrier at Silverstone and write it off. He had to give Silverstone £500 to repair the barrier just to rub the insult in! He was ever so slightly upset so had ever such a small drink and shot my dads friend with an air pistol, who had also had a small drink and didn't realise how serious it was until he woke the next morning in a pool of blood. A sign of a good weekend?

Al - that was quite a rollercoaster of a story!

I always think if people have the money to be racing a classic Ferrari at a place like that they can hopefully afford to fix it if they bend it  kinda like off-roading, you have to accept it's always possible you're going to roll the thing even if you're taking it easy.

It's pretty hard to write off a lot of the real racing metal as the teams have the ability to rebuild / re-create the entire car from scratch if needed. Talking to my mate, they'd just rebuilt one after a big "off", took many many months. Certainly they're not afraid of trading paint in a lot of the races, especially the "cheap" stuff like Minis & Cortinas.

One of the first times Dad went to the Goodwood Revival. One of the races had a starting line up worth around £12 million (for something like a dozen cars). At least half of them required a full rebuild at the end of the race... Hell if you can afford it at least enjoy it. He spoke with one of the owners and apparently it's only raced once a year at Goodwood, they then spend the rest of the year rebuilding it for the next year...

That was only about half the story, I skipped why he had the pistol in the first place. This was an old road car rather than a classic race car, he bought it many years ago when they were more affordable and cherished it. It's gone to the insurance company now. I don't know him ,only his brother in law but I get the impression the whole experience knocked him quite hard.
