Gazzar
I've bought one of these for my tdi200 lwb. So, here are a few comparison photos of the modified transfer box. The thing they did was to move the intermediate shaft and cut a new gear set with a different ratio on the high gear, to give a ratio similar to the fairey overdrive. Gazzar
The intermediate shaft. It has to be retained, but the retainer stud home ended up in the wrong place. So they moved it. Suppose it works, but I'll be using sealant on that for sure.
lo-fi
Thanks, that's the first detailed pics I've seen of it.
Gazzar
Thought it was worthwhile. I'll do same for the gear set, when I've got to that part of my gearbox build. It's a second hand box, v and I found this curious arrangement at the breather. A bit of nylon pipe, siliconed in. I've no idea why.

Probably to stop it being blocked buy sealant.
Bigj66
I was thinking of getting this done to mine. What’s your thoughts on the quality of the work? Looking at the photos I’m a bit undecided.

Looking at the photos I’m a bit undecided. If it was a new casting, I'd say, poor, but adequate. But it's reworking an old box, so I'd say adequate, but not tidy. I think I'll take another look at that surface in the first photo, it might be deceptive. If the shaft is in the right place, and the thrust washers have enough to perch on, and doesn't leak, it's fine. What is apparent is that the series 3 box has a heavier construction, thicker ribs in lots of places, so if I was getting a box done, I'd start there. secondjeremy
The load on the intermediate shaft is on the front - S1's had a shaft that was the diameter of the small front bearing for all its length and bearings to match and its common to find that a groove has worn in the front end and the front bearing has worn out. the back one is usually OK as is the shaft at that end. In the middle of the S2 run LR enlarged most of the shaft and fitted bigger bearings - which cured the problem. So the proximity of the securing bolt hole to the back bearing shouldn't be a problem. Anderzander
I’ve just noticed - the intermediate gear is 521330: a series 2 suffix B item that I’ve been trying to hunt down. What are the other parts/gears that come in the kit other than the modified case ?

I don't know much about tranny boxes but there are 3 shafts i think that come in the kit, inc 2 of the 3 gears needed to fit the shafts then you need to order another gear thats not in the kit as the original gear won't do now, i will dig the invoice out later for the part number, you also get a thrust washer and all the gaskets 🙂

Romahomepete
You would expect them to include all the bits in the kit!! Peter

DaveSIIA
The low gear is common to both standard and Ashcroft high ratio transfer boxes. The choice is with the user as to whether to reuse a potentially worn low gear in mesh with the new intermediate gear and possibly suffer higher noise levels. Wedmore Plugger
Now they are back in stock I have just fitted one of these high ratio conversions to my S3 109 (with 200tdi engine) after the old overdrive disintegrated ...absolutely fantastic - Landie now easily keeps up with modern traffic and cruises at 60+ without sounding like it is thrashing itself to death! How do you find 1st and 2nd i found them to high even after refitting the 4 7.1 diff back in to test so in the end i removed the HRTC replaced it with a std transfer box and refitted the 3 5.4 diff which i found tons better but even though it will do 80+ it sounds like it needs an o/d ☹️

I too found that the vehicle is under geared with just an overdrive or the taller diffs, but is over geared with both, which is a bigger problem. The same would apply with HRTC and the diffs. That is why I bought some 4.1:1 diff gears, a Rover set from Nige and a Dana60 set from a US diff specialist. I can’t be sure the Dana gears will fit the Salisbury axle, but I’m reasonably confident. They even have a 10-spline pinion like the Salisbury, but until I have the gears side by side with a Salisbury set to measure up or try to fit them directly, I won’t know for certain. But 4.1 diffs with the overdrive gives 1st and 4th OD final ratios comparable to a Tdi Defender 1st and 5th, so it should work out well if they do fit. Its hard to argue against the greater benefits of using an LT77 and LT230 with 3.54 diffs under those circumstances. I’m only doing it the hard, noisy and weaker way to retain the VIN and tax exemption.
