RRC body/shell refurbishment specialist recommendations

They've been putting the time in , that has moved on a whole lot. Is it on the original springs? It looks quite high, although it is still in build so more to add yet.

Do you have a first road trip in mind yet?

The interior trim is being sent for valeting next week and then we can work out what to do about the flocking on the boot panels and the fabric on the front seat bases (where the cloth has unstuck from the backing fabric).

I haven’t used them yet, so can’t personally endorse, but I was recommended this company for flocking…

It was a recommendation I’d value and I’ve seen the end results which are very good and price seemed good value.

Original front springs and police rear springs from before I bought in 2002/2003.  I liked the poise and there was nothing wrong with them, so I had them clean and repaint them rather than replace with new - different brands have different quality, and even good brands have variations, so I prefer to stick with original where condition is good and the results are already proven.  Same with the DeCarbon dampers - they wanted to replace them, but I liked their feel and they have long been out of production, so I had them check them all for their condition and rate and they cleaned them up for reuse.  They have been on over 20 years too, but are mint.

It does look very high, but the interior and glazing is still to be added, so the springs will compress a little, and the lack of bumpers, front spoiler, sill covers and mud flaps do make the bottom very bare and make it look even higher.

Agree entirely on the variable quality with replacement springs and dampers . Now you have mentioned the police spec I do remember you mentioning that before. Having built a few RRC's from the chassis up it is surprising just how much mass goes on at the final finish build stage .

Now that I have a considerably closer workplace, I dropped into Kettering on the way home on Friday afternoon to discuss a couple of issues holding up progress (mainly the exhaust).  The engine bay is now mostly complete, the washer Otto leg and a few other bits probably kept out to preserve space for fitting said exhaust.  The paint looks superb, just needing the satin black on the upper door pillars (this was pointed out to them again as they didn’t appear to remember it).  The dash is back in.  I had expected they’d install the two-way dash cams first so that the wiring would be easier, but they haven’t ordered the system yet.

On a separate note, I popped into a main post office to replace my lapsed driving licence this morning, so should be able to drive this once complete and also the 109 once it’s running again and reinsured.  I’m having to use my UAE licence for the rental cars until then.

Are you going to be nervous to use it ?

Yes.  Probably very nervous.

Wow!

I have only just seen your thread this morning @Snagger, and caught up. This will be miles better than anything that ever left the factory. Immaculate. Well it certainly looks it from the pictures.

I agree with your thoughts on spending money on an older classic rather than something new that will just depreciate rapidly.

Interesting to see certain aspects of your pictures compared to mine which didn't leave the factory as a diesel, such as mine has the water separator missing. (What a stupid place to put it though! Who is going to regularly empty that).

Your vehicle is looking amazing!

Thanks, Duncan.  For the money spent, it should look good.

The AC drier bottle was added along with the condenser and twin fans a decade ago, using parts from a 300Tdi Discovery.  That was also the source for the heater unit with installed evaporator, the bulk of the pipe work, the controls and the compressor.  It was missing one pipe and a few bits of the wiring, which had all been cut by the owner to rapidly remove the engine, so the system was never commissioned.  It’s a sympathetic mod.  The main harness wiring was already fitted from the factory, so it’s mostly a matter of adding the sub harnesses.  The same applies to the seat and windscreen heating - the wiring was all in place, so I just needed the switches and the heat pads and heated screen.
