Hmmm. I'm all for the Forum keeping to topic and not being let to drop to gutter level chat, but some of the suggestions listed above for autocorrect are a bit over the top. Its nice to use different terms and expressions to describe different events. I would use "awsome" in certain areas where I would use "excellent" in others. Thats just one example but surly fredom should be given to the way we express ourselves.

It was a joke, hence the Colonel Blimp sign-off, but it also touches on the ever increasing use of the word awesome, which for some reason I can't stand, especially if it said by a Californian teenager! ;) I put this down to getting old and to aspring to be a miserable old git like Mog ;);)

The replacing thing was a joke as I'm reminded by my american work colleagues that we use words like 'excellent', 'really' and 'brilliant'. I think they get 'brilliant' from films like 4 weddings etc rather than from real conversations, but I digress.

I didn't mean to start a whole debate about off and on topic subjects, but I do agree that there are plenty of LR forums where they have free for all sections for drivel, I mean important social events and viwepoints. ;)

The spelling thing and text speak is interesting. Personally i think most peoples gripe with it is not with the inability of how to spell, it's more to do with the interpreted lazyness of it. If someone can't be bothered to spell it correctly or you not use text speak so that I can easily understand it, why should I be bothered to help in replying. It's like reading the Newcastle accents in Viz, sometimes it's bloody hard to work out well the hell is being said.

It's more sensitive on here as it's the written word that we use to communicate and it's a technical forum, so mispellings or difficulty in understanding cause more issues.

Cheers

Steve

Still confused why you are talking to me about "rubbish threads" and "off topic" chat.. Somone else was talking about that shouldnt be allowed (which I agree), its not somthing I've done nor am likley to do. I just thought it was a bit crazy to ban the suggested words and ban bad spelling...

And finnaly. can we all kiss and make up? come on. Group hug :P

Scotian. There is a LR site which will welcome you with open arms. I don't think that this is the place for you. You want chat, this is the wrong place.

Jim,

you're a mod, and as such your comments get taken perhaps more sensitively than elsewhere. I think perhaps such a heavy handed approach is not warranted for LR4x4, although i know a forum where you would fit right in. If you have geniuine concerns about a forum member then PM is the way forward, otherwise sucn an unfriendly looking post is unacceptable here.

Please keep the forum a free place to chat and not go crazy with some of the suggested ideas.

I assumed that Jim was responding to this ^^^^ comment by Scotian. I assume (particularly in light of Scotians subsequent comments) that I too have misread it. It can be hard to get people's meaning sometimes when facial expressions cannot be seen and the tone of someone's voice cannot be judged.

not to mention one person's use of the word 'chat' is going to be different to another.

For one, I can appreciate LR4x4 for what it is, a highly comprehensive technical forum, and I can therefore see how it can be difficult to strike a balance. Having the place too informal breeds havok whereas an overly dogmatic approach breeds contempt and perhaps even a feeling of a cliquey 'old boys club'. I think for the moderating team to be 100% even handed 100% of the time is impossible, but men in glass houses shouldnt throw stones but I find some of the comments and reprimands ive seen from time to time to be beyond heavy handed, and just down right rude.

I suppose the main problem here is purely human nature. We are able to share information with one another and over time especially with socialising at events, challenges and playdays etc, we are bound to build up a rapport with one another. This in turn makes it even harder to keep everything 100% on topic and not have a bit of 'banter' (which even the most long-lived and highest ranking members and staff DO do from time to time). I for one however, feel that this adds a certain something to the feeling of the forums.

Is there such a thing as a Utopia?

My two penneth;

1) Text speak is DREADFUL and I don't even bother to try and decipher it....please don't do it

2) Spelling's easy enough to get right in this day and age - having said that, no-one's going to get cross if you're dyslexic unable to spell - we all put up with Reads90 :P

3) A bit of banter is fine but not if it detracts from the technical nature of the forum

4) Please everyone try and keep this great site above the general drivel that is most other LR sites...

Unfortunately this forum does not yet have a rubbish/off topic/Open forum.

I don't neccessarily see that as unfortunate Jim - there are a number of forums that offer that facility and cater for all sorts of discussion. I view LR4x4 as a more serious Land Rover topic forum and therefore like many bear that in mind when posting on here.

LR4x4 is fine as it is - as are some of the others.

I use Google for all sorts of things so downloaded the Google Toolbar into my web browser.

It sits at the top of my screen and contains its most useful feature, a one click spell checker.

As has been said I accept that, as an engineer, I cannot spell but that is no excuse for not using a checker.

I think on the spelling front I try to spell as best as I can and I will check if I am sure it is wrong but I also produce typos when responding quickly to something and I often don't get the chance to edit the typos out. I think that spelling should be good but allowances made for those who produce typos and when trying to name something that is just awkward to spell.

Text speak should be for texting only as it is on every forum I've used except handbag.com.

I use another site to discuss environmental architecture and on there they like to keep it on topic but do also have a 'Gossip' forum to allow people to have light banter on anything (most of the time). It works fine except that for whatever reason it is an anonymous forum so folks make comments and snipes at each other while hiding behind the anonymity. That isn't so good. I also use a 'girlie' chat forum and do all my mindless chatter there and then come here for the sensible technical stuff.

No-one is going to get banned for bad spelling, it just can be corrected using a spell checker if necessary. Text speak however, is a lazy way of using the English language. People who want us to go to the bother of answering a question, should go to the same bother of using English.

is this a technical thread

Obviously not, but it's a necessary poke in the ribs. Some banter is fine, but too much is a bad thing for this website, so it has to brought down occasionally.

Long-term members have something of a right to post off-topic stuff, but a newbie coming on here and posting rubbish right from the start is a different thing entirely.

Les.
