Hybrid_From_Hell
Right The build commences. Starting with the relinered block, which has been in a cleaning tank x 2 times So, 1st thing to do was to clean it - seriously clean it Cleaning tanks despite what people think are not enough, you have to be sure in getting every last piece of dirt outm, every last bit of swarf, if you don't it will find its way out at some future pint - cleanlyness is everything So, with a suitable sort of stand, a Steam cleaner, Engine degreaser, Jizer, pipe cleaners and a couple of scrubbing brushes and toothbrushes it go hit big time. I DELIBERATELY did about 30 mins on it, and then removed the 2 bungs screwed in at the back of the oil ways - se one dribbled as soon as removed old oil, thats 2 x tank cleans and 1 x 30 mins steam scrub and cleaners... These and others were then reblasted squirted and cleaned then the whole load air lined dry and sprayed with oil to ensure nothing goes rusty pre the build up Which is coming soon, very soon, few more bits to clean Nige

Hybrid_From_Hell
Was taking shape, but whilst working on the head rebuilds the inlets valve guides are betwwen gastly and absolutely horrendous the valves flopped about like a floppy thing in a bucket of slop New Bronze guides ordered from JED... and a bill to come from him ...and an Engineering company who thought they were only going getting enough £s to polish the crank Bugger sums it up Nige

rusty_wingnut
I recently rebuilt my 2ltr petrol to a hotter spec than original and it cost me well over £3k despite doing nearly everything bar machining and parts myself. Looks good mate - keep it going!

Bowie69
Can I ask why? Surely you knew you wouldn't see much change out of £2K to just bolt that lot together?
Hybrid_From_Hell
Just seems everything I touch has a "Problem" Was hoping to have the bottom end back together this week, call from the machine shop was that whilst the main and big ends only needed a polish, the crank seal journal was badly scored and needs machining down and resleeving, so will be another 10 days The heads that needed 8 inlet guides, now cleaned now really needs 8 exhaust guides, these will be with me next week, so can get to him the week after, and then heads remachined back to me week after that The timing chain dmaged, so needs new kit, sump has a HUGE flattened area where clouted, and stariner bent, which cracked when tried to straighten, sump is a "Eales Special" so have another std sump, just need to chop out all the baffles, then weld in the baffles I removed from the Eales sump and so it goes on, I have a larger selection of cleaned parts and a smaller wallet, but nothing even looking like an engine Hey Ho And the next prob is ? V8 Freak
Just think of the end result and all the associated benefits and it will all be worth it.... A tank currently takes you 120 miles or so.... You will be able to take more breaks when that falls under 100 per tank... That should be in tune with your need to rest and have a snooze.. .(I hear it becomes more frequent when you are old..... ) Neil
Jon White
120 miles to a tankful????? Thats appauling!!!!!!!!!! I get nearly 400 in my series! Jon
FridgeFreezer
I get nearly 400 in my series! Yeah but I bet you'd both arrive at the end of 400 miles at about the same time
need4speed
.....the crank seal journal was badly scored and needs machining down and resleeving.... Thats unusual for the RV8 isnt it? Wonder what happened there considering the rest of the journals only needed polishing? Phil
Bowie69
Probably dust ingress through an unsealed bell housing, that's if it is the rear crank seal of course! If it's the front one, then it's just from all the dust being kicked up, remember the bores?
need4speed
True. But you would have thought that the seals would have stopped anything big enough to have the potential to score the journal itself? No matter. If it needs doing, it needs doing...
