Hybrid_From_Hell
Evening Porn Fans Yee bl**dy gods, I have learnt a huge amount since I bought this : DO NOT trust anything if you buy an engine in Boxes - what you think is right is wrong Odd bits that you have no idea where on earth they go wuill eventually dawn - then you launch them as they are part of the horrendous bodging that went on Engines such as these no 2 are ever alike, John Eales builds an engine and just grabs the bits to make it all fit together, there is a huge mismatch of parts, but with his extreme skill and knowledge the mismatch works... Then it passes to an idiot, who swaps something for a reason and then the fun starts - as a cascade of problems ensue, then its sold to someone who takes over, and c*cks it up further and passes it on, then an unsuspecting LR4x4 Admin buys it ....and the "Fun" is months in its nightmareness DO not think that bits that in your experience never wear out / are abused / screwed ...aren't - as I found out When an engine like this has passed through the hands of 2+ x bodgers don't "Expect" anything - assume the very worst and hope to be disappointed You won't be disappointed It took a mate of mine who I regard as the finest mechanic I have ever known, and who will forget about V8 and mechanics more than I will ever know, then me, a HUGE amount of beer and a big F O Indian takeaway, more beer and some serious hours of inspecting and then launching parts to get this together - without his help I would have struggled and defo would have missed things, more later, but I have a sort of engine looking thing now Loads more to do, ........but its no longer a "warnevapourengine" Note the pipe I was going to using, a quick clean up in the shot blasting cabinet and the paint gone a hole is there ....arrrgghh FFS....... Oh, and my machining of the crank pulley for one of my Megasquirt Trigger Wheels was a bad idea for Friday 13th cocked that up so have sourced another, coil Pack bracket will be "fun" too More to come - much more, but fitting 1st 2 weeks June is still on the cards Nige
eastw77
Looks like a very frustrating project but I'm sure once it's in your Landy and propelling you through some deep thick mud you will have a smile on your face the size of slice of melon :D

Hybrid_From_Hell
Right Few bits and bobs sorted today, 1st being the Trigger wheel Started by machining the convex shape off the back of a 4.6 serp Pulley (what I am using) to give a mounting surface that it flat, the 2 x facory holes are M8 This was a bit of a bugger, as its a Bitsa front end, but I grabbed a 4.6 Serp Trigger wheel from my stock and with the aid of my rotary table and several hourspratting about I now have an adjustable Trigger wheel. This will be mounted with the 2 x M8 screws etc, then when finished the opposites will be welded up etc One step closer Nige
Hybrid_From_Hell
Hmmmmmmm around 8.15am - a perefectly servicable 90 reverses out from a workshop Some 9 hours later the result of the years snow and salt regime is seen better as the engine is slowly removed (not to mention the crud of a "few" events ...... So break out the soaps and pressure washer and I have a much cleaner if not red rust engine bay, and chassis in places - so I will be delaying the install of the new engine whilst a paint and spuce up is the order of the next couple of days, too good an opportunity to miss, this years salt on the roads and the amount I used the 90 really shows, horrified at what was there ............... Anyway, out with the old low powered V8 And all the bits removed needing a clean and / or paint, stored carefully : Can those reading spot any subtle clues that "She" just may be away ? Jon White
Errr nigge, hating to throw a spanner in the works here, but why are you only machining pulleys now??? Surely you should have done all of this before hand and then had the whole, assembled bottom end dynamically balanced? There is no way in hell now that it'll all be balanced! Shouldn't you now be pulling the bottom end out again for balancing? Jon
Hybrid_From_Hell
No, in all technical ways you are quite right However Sent the machined pulley and a unmachined TW to Mr Eales Plus Crank Block etc when it had the new liners, his view was Pulley & TW was acceptable and a couple of holes / slots in it would be of little effect, as to truly balance dynamically the bottom end I should would need to also have the flywheel, clutch plate and Clutch cover also done, and, in simple terms if I ever removed and refitted the clutch, or fitted a new cover or plate then it would technically need rebalancing. His view was as the "Core" is balanced, then yes shoving a second hand flywheel cover plate and TW will upset it a tad, but not to worry So, I didn't But technically your dead right... (as you often are you annoying git ) Nige

Hybrid_From_Hell
Well, Tuesday saw me hitting the open engine bay with detergents, and a long session with the pressure washer then sprayed the area when drier with brake cleaner, and air blasted it away, this seemed to remove most of the dirt that was hiding, and all the oil and greasey stains, the engine bay looked even worse, with rust everywhere and I then set to with a combination of masking tape, undoing things, wire brushing on a drill, and by hand, and a scraper, and some emery paper etc etc, then brake cleanered and blow off again, and set to with the primer on those places than were really bad / bare / rust. I have been recomended the stuff below, not cheap but apparently good stuff, reacts with the rust, forms a good bond, and sticks like the preverbial, time will tell, it semells very very odd, like a acidy P38 fillery type of smell, sure stuck to my F paws thats for sure. Gone from front to rear of the gearbox crossmember Yesterday then saw 2 x top coats of black SPAREX tractor paint and Slate grey Body paint wherever needed, its a matter of just being carefull and taking your time, took me most of the day, removed all tape and bolted bits back on, and the entire front end was then waxoiled (cat free zone) with about 1/3 of a gallon under pressure, so seeing the difference the middle and back end is going to have the same treatment later this year Find SPAREX is good paint, hard sticks well, covers well, dries quick and doesn't chip or peel like Hanmerite or POR15 This has meant a delay in the engine in milestone - all being well that goes in tommorow Pics for those interested : 2 days in effect "Lost" from the engine swap, but I think time that was desperately needed Roll on Wends Nige
