A Twig
I use rustoleum now on absolutely anything metal that I own, great stuff
Anderzander
Looks like you got a good finish with the sparex I've been using the hammerite rust converter stuff - its white and then reacts with the rust, turning blue and finally finishes up black. It seems really good - even if you leave it with no top coat it'll still seem to last for going on a year. So I've been having a roll around underneath finding the corners and crevices. I've also used Owatrol oil - in some places as a neat paint over - though it's easiest to use as a thinners in paint. Its very satisfying work. Mark
Another vote for the rustoleum paint. Thier combination primer/topcoat is good stuff too, however, if you choose to use a primer with it, make sure it is very well dried.
Hybrid_From_Hell
Do you know "those days" - where nearly everything you touch goes Awry - or to **** ? That was my day today I woke up all keen and refreshed and jolly that it was after some months "Engine In" day, but the "Smile" was worn away bit by bit I started with a sunny day, and pushed the LR out of the workshop, the rain started almost immeaditely sio I decided to swap the old Eales Block engine mounts to the new, and saw the holes were different - Que Iceberg Block methinks , so welded holes up and redrilled to siut and have all line up, ....thats after going and getting more gas as run out Then I had to make a bung for the GEMS Unit remove bottom of the block : Whacked in place nice tight fit and sorted that prob Then the clutch, could I find my trusty old clutch alignment tool ? Could I ****, so..... I made a new one (about 50 mins) .....then 2 secs later found the old one . Then when I decided to lift the new engine up on my trusty Hoist whilst 5 ft in the air mit V8 - I heard a Farty type noise and the hoist then drop as the seals had decided at this wonderful moment to die By now, in "Not the best ******g moods the welder welded the hoist to its highest position, and I wheeled it out of the garage or rather I tried as it now didn't clear the door, - Oh how I laughed - so some 15 mins on anglo saxon grunting saw it outside, me ****d, and then I used some ancient lifting ratchet to get the engine up. The "would I be intersted in some Anglian Windows ****e Salesman" had slightly less than a full broadside and is most I feel unlikely to 'cold call' on me again ...ever Anyway, then stripped the internal cluch activators, and cleaned and added new bits and refitted, the V8 up for the 1st time in many years built up on a hoist between HUGE showers (I decided to stuff it get wet and get it in) immeadiely when near the gearbox saw the A/C bracket foul hugely, so engine removed dropped and bracket / pump removed choopped linished back uop and was finally in and the new engine modified mounts lined up - thank God Funnily enough my mood improved immeaditely So, pics : It may be in, but gawd there is so much to make modify and resolve But .....its IN and then the rain stopped and the sun came out Nige

Hybrid_From_Hell
I think I put it there to save stabbing myself / anyone / passer by / Anglian Pill*ck "Could I interest you in a quote for double glazing sir" ? (the ENTIRE F HOUSE is double glazed windows doors sofit boards the lot ) (Which was my reply) (ish ) and the classic answer ? "Yes Sir, but its quite old isn't it" (You do not wnat to know the next 2 minutes - but it involved his B*ttom and its age and if he might like a 'new one' from the screwdriver I was holding) Nige

Hybrid_From_Hell
Righty Ho More frustrating sort of day again The Triple Plenum has no means of connecting to the massive V8 90 Air Filter and Box that was on the old engine, (and will be used again), the old engine, being a single Plenum type just had a home made tube made up and fitted with hoses each end, triple unit entry was always going to need something completely different. A chat with Mr Eales set me off today with the thoughts of making a dummy unit up, so I broke out all the equipement I tend to use Manual CAD* V1.1, a basic little version, but serves me well, along with Back of fag packet V11.6, and This is often with a Weetabix 48 background, maybe with Cornflakes Suite 500g to help out. So, problem is here is the plate I have from John that joins the 3 x Plenums together is bolted to the 3 through contersunk allen caps, to remove I have to have to have some way of accessing the 12x bolts with the air box in place, after a selection of abortive Blue Peter efforts, I came up with this : Bigger than it looks, centre Hole is 3.5" and will have a Tube 'end' welded into it, then Huge 90 degree Hose tube etc from there to Air Box, the other 2 x holes LHS & RHS are "Access" ports, and will have a circle plate drilled taped and a ring of bolts to seal each side, only prob here was the ali plate wouln't fit it. I couldn't... as 1st plan have the inlet as one big tube at the back, as the aeroquip catch tank exit was smack bang in the way Using the "Cut" facility of CAD* V1.1 these were changed to squares, these allow enough access to the bolts and the ability to get the ali lump in and out if required. My Tig welding is going to get some severe practise shortly THATS going to take some time to make up, even with help...... Its just another of the probs in fitting a engine from a teachest of bits, bits are missing, and some bits won't fit, and its often the little jobs that can take an age to get right Hey ho Anyway, more painting done, plus some thought as to how to get around some of the plumbing probs, and all I know is that there is a huge amount of work to yet be done More to follow Nige * CAD = Cardboard Aided Design
steve_d
If you bought some ali induction pipe bends you could cut and shut them to form a three branch inlet. This would then weld to the ali adaptor plate leaving the fixings accessable from outside rather than having multiple covers which could leak. Pipes (other sizes are avaiable) Steve

Hybrid_From_Hell
Another day, and another internal screaming feeling. The CAD Weetbix 48 abortion was Exported having been cut and splitinto 2 files and taken to see 2 very nice chaps who after some bleating noises down the phone kindly agreed to guiilotine and fold the 2 parts, very kind - you know who you are (and will renmain nameless so not swamped with similar reuests ) and I left with 2 'closish' CAD to Steel 1.2mm Copies that were Fettleable" These were then going to require some work, some ?, Jeez, I have been at these '2 bits' since about 10.30am, and only stopped for Lucnch Mr Mr V8Freak who had popped over to lend a hand and help (very much appreciated* , Neil left about 4.00pm and I carried on till stiopping about 10 mins ago Basically Neil did all sorts to the truck, I spent all the time to and from the truck to the milling machine, filing, drilling and F about to try to get (a) air box for the 3 x inlets, and (b) not do something stupid and F it up with 18x Holes to be put in in and then tig tacked up the opportunities for scrap was high ... The Trumpet Flared plate (Ali lump) was made to fit the Back plate in steel via 12 x drilled holes, then, with the ali plate bolted to the back plate some of the weridest and least used tools were dug out and used in the mill to bore out the trumpet entries in the back plate, then large 95mm hole front plate and 2 x Square hatches milled / filed to allow entry into it to do up all 12 x allen screws etc. The 2 x square holes will have plates fitted which blank then off using M5 Nuts and captive bolts etc, these still being made So, some pics ? Basically 3 x days on the trumpet Box Would have been more without 'very kind soud' folding up my cornflake contraption The inletto it (95mm) was cut at a slight 'slant' so that the tacked on tube plus a 90 degree hose points direcly towards the huge airbox. Theres a monster 'TIG practise session' coming up for me , by too tired to risk it tonight, plus also want to make sure everything fits and lines up before making it totally 'untakeapartable' Some pics, .......not much to show for 2 days more work on the same job from the day before Loads to do Nige * Yes, Neil left fed & "Injury" free

That was my day today I woke up all keen and refreshed and jolly that it was after some months "Engine In" day, but the "Smile" was worn away bit by bit Sounds familiar Did you know you can strip the splines in the clutch when there's a double dowel and you tighten the bellhousing anyway? Ahh, the joys of deadlines. Nice V8 porn though, will definitely need to hear that engine someday.
V8 Freak
What amazed me with this build / install is how much is bespoke and will require fabrication work... (Ideally a bigger engine bay !!) Oil catch tank, remote oil cooler, remote oil filter all have to find homes... We even started talking about washer bottle in the cab on in the rear tub at one point! It's looking great Nige... If the bits I touched / fitted fail at any point, you have no recourse.... It's your own fauly for letting me near it ! Neil
Hybrid_From_Hell
SWMBO Returneth Thursday, so I'll have to move the bed back into the house Bit more today, PAS pipes sorted, what PITFA - phoned loads of companies re this "Oh no Sir we can't use your old fittings sir, the earth would be shifted in its orbit causing Global chaos, Bunnies would die, and Tectonic Plates are liable to move along with death and injury and did we mention the old unions having too large a carbon footprint type boll*x oh - and as those are Special fitting we don't have them so we can't even help you NER NER NER you 2nd hand pipe / fitting scumy person you .... Que Pertec Guildford "If its sensible and safe we will help - if its not we won't" Fair enough .... Thank god for an intelligent human being So, it was they are and I have 2 x PAS pipes 4000 PSI on the HP, should be enough Cheap, nicely done and pleasure to deal with, used the ends from 4.0 Non Thor Pump out to PAS Box and Container to Pump which I picked up from the ever help Paul & Lucy at Challenger 4x4 for not too much - Thanks Guys Fantasic. PAS reurn from Box to Container was ex 4.6 Pump PSS end and the HP at the PAS Box end was from a 300 TDI pipe. Note the 4.0 from the punmp has a reduction tail in it for pressure increase, so alow 7" of hose before chopping off Take off plate now fitted with 2 x Gold Pro Aeroquip ends, some DIY Pipework is coming, plus the Oil stat is found and rebuilt, and I have bought a new remote filter housing, along with other bits I'm broke again I have a HD Oil Cooler thats going in front of the rad for flow (what everyone has said) (hence why old twin fan set up is up for sale ) which means huge amounts of fab work to come for cooler and new 16" fan, gawd sake my wallet seems to be hemoridging The the Rad. Have moved 1/2" inboard - Thanks go to Both Les H and Zim for pics and calls, I have already tried a move - but another 14mm tomm should see it in the right pos, thanks Guys really helpfull, what LR4x4 is all about . The 4.6 Cowling is almost square so no use, but a 3.9 Serp Cowling and Viscous fits a treat - well after 2 hours + with a hacksaw and dremel to get it to fit the rad at all close, need to change the top union on the rad, so of to a rad specialist tomm, but hoses now are everywhere and think I am gettng somewhere now PAS Pump hses with new crimps ends etc fitted now, so cracking on, expect a slow down from thursday on Still somehow have to find space for Catch Tank, PAS Res, Cooler, Oil Stat, Remote filter, and other bits top help have fitted an V late type washer bottle assembley which goes under the passenger wing and bolts to the galv inner wing, rather than the std bottle, thats where the catch tank is going, PAS res in moved to passenger side, Oil Cooler to front of rad, and Oil Stat will be drivers side - I fink Loads to do stil Nige

ThreeSheds
Lovely work... I love this thread! I found my local Mend-A-Hose were really good when I needed a similar miss-match of pipe fittings making up. Their attitude appeared to be that they were there to 'mend a hose' and so (again) since they judged it to be safe and sensible they did it..
