  1. My main reason for asking is I was talking to someone who knows a bit about Rover V8's who, when I mention my intension to run the 4.2 made a strange noise and said "I dont think they have a cross bolted block". Means nothing to me!!! So are they or arn't they cross bolted? Is it a problem if they are not? Is there any other reason not to use a 4.2? are any of the other Cheap and readily available V8's more suited to a challenge truck?
  2. Dont I!!!! Mmmmm, I must have ben mistaken :D
  3. Just pulling some bits together for a rebuild/ new build of the Challenge truck. Looks like I'll be blowing most of my very small budget on axles as I want the truck to be strong and reliable and to date axle breakage has been my biggest issue. This in mind there wont be a whole heap of cash left for the rest. I want an auto box and some more power. Dave ashcroft has advised the best starting point for what I want is and auto out of a RR LSE as they are Hydraulic, The shortest of the autos and will have the better internals fitted which go hand in hand with the work he will do to the box. I also want a boost in power but not after silly figures just yet so was thinking of buying a complete, Scrap LSE (as they are pretty cheap) and using the V8 as well. So the question being (sorry for the waffling to get here) Is the 4.2 OK? Im not after huge HP just yet, Just acceptable with the auto and reliable. Any help advice, Pro's, Con's, suggestions appreciated. Im a V8 novice so please help me out. Thanks. Steve.
  4. Ive had 2, They were about £75 I think. but the bearing doesn't last long so im just in the proccess of trying to find some way of making the bearing replacable!
  5. I used a 300 Tdi defender manifold gasket, I cant remember the part number. If I can dig it out I'll post it tomorrow..
  6. Any 5 pin change over relay ( as Landy man luke^^^^^ Said) will do it or I have the exact switch you need, I'll chuck one in the truck when i come over. Just make sure its a change over and not a 5 pin with two common outputs.
  7. Also wrong way around. Amazed it didn't P!&& water out like that.
  8. Sounds fine to me. Though I would be tempted to tack it as you say then remove the springs and cycle the suspension to be sure that the radius arms dont foul the chassis at either extreme of movement. Full droop would be the issue I would have thought. Mine is std length but needs a bit put in it as the hockey stick rubs a little!
  9. Air con systems are well known for bacteria build ups that lead to them smelling like fish. We use Forte (im sure other manufacturers do a similar thing) Air con treatment which you just press the top down, Chuck it in the foot well and close the car up for 5 mins with the air con running on Recirculate. Works a treat, Kills the bacteria and smells of apples for a few days. When the apples disappear all is well again.
  10. A valid point in theory but in practice they seem to be fine. I have been running high output pumps for a long while as have many others without any problem. And lets face it, What parts on our landrovers arn't being used above and beyond what they were designed for?
  11. Are Toyota and Nissan definitely the same?
  12. Those are normal mach 5 beadlocks. Jim has allied rock-a-thons which are the same as the wheels you will have seen on my truck when If you have seen it with the boggers fitted. They are better than the normal flat plate ones, The shape holds the tyre nicely and the rolled edge makes them quite strong but still quite light.
  13. Use these a lot, Have tried for Nissan the issue is they want vehicle details which I don't really have. There seems to be a lot of confusion as to which vehicles the axles I want are fitted to. The only way to check is to go through the chassis plate and decipher the option code's, C&P ratios, Diff size and shaft diameter. Not the easiest thing to get through on find-a-part. Although normally we find these services very good. Maybe the Yota axles would be more of a goer on find a part as I know all the details for the ones I want so I could try that.
  14. Ive got one somewhere purely for comedy value but when you roll they get stuck upsidedown!
  15. I reckon you probably do Si! Im after either late Nissan or Toyota axles, Have not 100% decided which ones. The pro's and cons seem to be much of a muchness so I thought I'd see whats about and how much. So far have failed to find either. I might still end up going Volvo, Although I dont think they are any easier to come by.
  16. Excellent time had by us, excellent atmosphere and plenty to see. Also quite enjoyed trying to look knowledgeable on Jims stand and helping out where I could. Nice to meet a few new people and put some face's to names. I also don't remember much about Sat night but I do know that if Paul Bass says "Follow me, I know where there's a night club" Be very careful The only low point was Waking up on Sunday morning with a hangover, opening my eyes to find I was between Jim and Chris :o , not a pretty sight first thing. Adrian tipping Jims banger in the ring was brilliant! Cant wait to go again. Thanks to Liz and the D44 team for their excellent hospitality on sat evening, Very much appreciated.
  17. And to be honest there are a lot of cars out there that you simply wont turn the steering with the engine off and stationary!
  18. Maybe not, Most of the orbital valves used for steering do actually pump oil in there own right so they will steer without the P.A.S. pump, Heavy I admit but they will steer.
  19. As it says in the title, Can anyone recommend a good jap 4x4 breaker? Cheers. Steve.
  20. Me, Then I can have some beer! You'll have some boggers before the weekends out, Now you've tried em you wont be able to resist!
  21. I was only messin! And, no R8 was way before my time!
  22. Yea, But Andy does like using his winch, think he spent more time on a rope than driving that weekend!
  23. Not much difference, My normal length 1/2" is only about an inch longer in the handle than my normal length 3/8" (both snap on if were name dropping  )
