Side lockers accessible from top?
miketomcat replied to Filbee's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
Some early 110's had a tool box/locker behind the rear wheel on the left. I was accessed from an Ali lid inside on the wheelbox. Mike -
Help identify this bracket please...
miketomcat replied to simonpelly's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
It is just a plate that bolts to several places on the engine and gearboxes that has a plastic clip for the wiring harness etc. I've seen them in both positions western and maverick discribe and on the flywheel housing at the back of the engine to hold the loom where it goes to the starter. Mike -
Optima's have very good cold cranking for their size. @Blanco the swordsman is not mine I work for a company restoring classic powerboats. Mike

We regularly fit two smaller battery's wired in parallel or series (depending on application). As said above two new identical battery's treated as a single battery is best or charged and discharged together. I would use the existing cabling or replace with the same section but use a slightly larger section between the two battery's. We normally leave them connected together but isolated from the rest of the boat. Current install is two 50amp blue top optima's wired for 24 volts to start two (one at a time) 6 pot 180hp ford D series mermaid diesels in a fairey super swordsman. Mike

Dear God I hope you have a better time. The whole thing took us a year with 9 months from offer to completion. I truly believed on several occasions including upto a week before that it was never going to happen. Still I've a workshop to Re-build or maybe replace now. Mike

Perhaps the wheelbox front has been modified to allow the seats to sit further back.

Definitely cut away for non standard seats. The catch for holding the seats down has been moved to. Mike

Experiences with combined pintle hitch and ball hitch?
miketomcat replied to elbekko's topic in International Forum
I have to say over here it is common practice to use a tow ball for recovery, in fact on several occasions I've used one over a "recovery point" because I wasn't comfortable with the fabrication. The only time I've seen a ball fail there was a large selection of cross member still attached. I think in aus the gross weight of off road vehicles is considerably higher than Europe thus the failures. Mike -
Experiences with combined pintle hitch and ball hitch?
miketomcat replied to elbekko's topic in International Forum
I can't remember exactly but they are definitely rated to 3.5t and could well be 5t. I'd certainly trust it for recovery. Mike -
Experiences with combined pintle hitch and ball hitch?
miketomcat replied to elbekko's topic in International Forum
I used the hitch you mention for many years on the back of 45. It's a good compromise. The ball is replaceable however mine never wore or bent. I towed everything with mine from Sankeys to boat trailers with rather more than the towing limit (low speed manoeuvring). I never had any issues using it for recovery mind I do have mechanical sympathy. It's worth noting you can only tow Sankey's with a rotating ring and commercial rings don't fit. The only reason I don't still have one is both truck have a Dixon bate adjustable slider so I have two ball hitches on sliders and one NATO that can be put on either truck. Finally they're good for touch parking and I would happily have another. Mike -

On the bright side I've finally moved house so have plenty to keep me busy and thoughts of camper builds at bay for quite a while. Mike

bringing my 1983 110 back to life
miketomcat replied to Lou C's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
I have an 83 110 SW as well so ask away not much I have touched either. Mike -
Curve ball not rugged as such but I've got a fairphone 3. I've dropped mine several times and I work in a boat yard with it in my pocket. The reason I bought it was a couldn't find a rugged phone I liked/could afford and every part is easily replaceable so if I break it I can fix it. Mike

3 bolt or 4 bolt steering box for 200tdi 110
miketomcat replied to hurbie's topic in International Forum
The three bolt is quite a bit bigger. I'm fairly sure I swapped the drop arm on our three bolt as it kept coming loose and I think retro is correct. Mike -

3 bolt or 4 bolt steering box for 200tdi 110
miketomcat replied to hurbie's topic in International Forum
Not that I'm aware of. The three bolt that was on our 110 looked to be original so 30 years and 150k miles. I changed it because the drop arm kept coming loose. The 6 bolt is supposed to be heavy duty and is a straight swap for the four bolt but again that's metric (off the shelf for a 200tdi) hoses so doesn't fit three bolt hoses. Mike -
3 bolt or 4 bolt steering box for 200tdi 110
miketomcat replied to hurbie's topic in International Forum
If your using a 200tdi you would need special hoses to fit a 3 bolt as they are imperial. You can buy hoses/pipe off the shelf to connect a 4 bolt to a 200tdi. Mike -
Yeah that sounds similar. Mike

Ours is M&S premier and if I remember correctly the garage cover is unlimited. Mike

The Four Magic Words From Satan that make your wallet shrink
miketomcat replied to JeffR's topic in International Forum
A chassis swap last year turned into new: battery box, front edge of rear floor, passenger C post, repairs to both rear sills and a patch up of the drivers C post. I feel your pain. Mind the truck is nearly 40 years old so needs some loving from time to time. Mike
