Beading stainless coolant pipe - tools / ideas

One of the jobs I'm currently half way through is replacing the mish-mash of coolant pipes on the 109 with stainless sections. As part of this, I need to put a bead around the end to help hold the hose on.

You can buy tools to do this for varying amounts of money, about £150 is the minimum I've seen. An additional wrinkle is that cheaper ones seem to be limited in material thickness - the pipes I've got are 1.2mm wall stainless, which is pushing the limit for most commercial products I've seen.

Typical tools are:

Similar but £300 cheaper:

Earl's make these much cheaper things but they're specific to a particular diameter of tube and I don't trust the result as much:

I've seen home-brew cheap options using mole grips or crimping pliers fashioned to gradually press a bead into a pipe but they don't inspire full confidence and look a bit tedious.

Currently I'm considering DIYing something similar to MickeyW's version:

Anyone else done anything similar / got any better ideas or neat wrinkles?

If it helps I have a lathe and a fairly hefty arbour press.

EDIT: Knackers, just found Nige has already done a thread on this!

Interesting post as I have been faced with the same problem fitting the 200 Tdi in the Hybrid. Eventually ended up going to a machine shop place in Holand to get them done. Crate of beer was enough - esp. when they learned I got good beer...

TBH I'm being half tempted by the idea of just buying the "Useful tools" one to do it properly, as I could always flog it on ebay later if I get bored of flanging things

It's a bit extravagant but I've been saving pennies specifically for the purpose of sorting things like this with the 109 and doing it properly, and money spent on tools is never wasted.

If you can weld stainless (or know someone that can) TIG a few beads around the diameter, doesn't need to be continuous as it is there to stop the hose from sliding off, not do the actual sealing.

Could save a load of pennies...

I’ll probably need some custom hoses, as when I fit 4.6 in range rover classic I’m also using an aftermarket Hevac.

So if it helps, you could have some funds towards tool for borrowing when needed, or alternatively making up ss sections.
