So trying to sort the above out This is how it was pieces cut away to get rims on addition of coil pack holders, space invader, toast rack and chassis step notch drilled and tapped more or less complete regards Stephen
Bowie69
If I am honest, I'm not entirely sure what I am looking at, some bracing for the portal box or something?
Stellaghost
If you can remember the horse shoe brackets I made to hang the calipers off, the first photo shows the top of them brackets cut off to allow 17" rims to fit when moved inboard The new brackets are to tie everything back in again so it still has the original strength because all portal box fastening points are connected again Hope that makes sense Regards Stephen 1
Stellaghost
Do you sometimes wish you hadn't started something, I'm nearly at that point with fitting the rims to the axle Trying to tie the caliper brackets in at the top of the portal box has caused me a lot of issues, although it wouldn't be an problem if width wasn't an issue On my previous post wheel was not tried due to other priorities last night, so got up get wheel on and it turned to rat poop So this didn't work why ? Wheel rim catching so this is where I'm at now Cap heads drilled out or countersunk to fit rim no longer catches but it is very tight If it becomes an issue I can always space rim out a bit Regards Stephen
Stellaghost
Due to tight tolerances I also modified the brake connections and re-routed the pipe Small angled connection made with copper pipe Brake pipe routed to the front of the rear axle instead of running along the back, this will give the braided hose more protection regards Stephen

FridgeFreezer
Crikey that's all very close - I had similar pain with my callipers although thankfully it was only the callipers / wheels that got adjusted, looks like yours is in danger of encroaching on the axle itself which is a real pain

Snagger
That is a great position to be in, “knocking up” a set of spacers just on the off chance you might need them! 😆
dangerous doug
I had this problem with my conversion. I know we’ve gone slightly different routes but I ended up welding a 10mm spacer to each hub. That buys loads of clearance for your brakes but is nothing on overall width

Even pinned to my browser. ......only 4 years late to respond to your comment!!! Still plugging away on the 1972 K5 Blazer. The axles are a hybrid Unimog404 portal box mounted to a Ford 9" centersection.... this allows the gearing to be brought WAY down (from 7.56:1 to 5.26:1) by swapping gears in the 3rd member, and makes the packaging of the axle simpler by removing that long pinion snout as well. Haven't done much "axle specific" work lately, but still need to get them measured for lockers, axleshafts and get the plumbing for the CTIS completed. It's not easy being a one-man-show.... everything takes forever. Cheers! -G

Stellaghost
Completed all 4 axle ends and brake pipe mods tonight, so wheels now turn great, close tolerances mind, however I have a plan if that becomes an issue Calipers and axle end now double up as a internal wheel scraper to stop the build up of mud etc....lol Also looking at a spare wheel carrier, that will lift the wheel off the deck and also swing away to allow access into the rear tub Regards Stephen

Of course, the best situation would be to work alone but have four arms…
