Mossberg
Just a quick question on painting hub faces - do or don't? I want to minimise future rust so want to know if it is a good idea to paint the hub faces. I was going to leave them bare and just put anti seize on it as I thought the paint may bind hub and wheel. So what are your thoughts please? As always, thanks for your help and advice as I am finding it really helpful as I start the maintenance on my defender. Anderzander
By face I assume you mean the surface that the studs protrude from and the outside of the bearing housing? If so I painted mine - and the back. I also painted the flange and the face of the stub too.

De Ranged
Grease or anti-seize If you paint a mating surface when you torque up your wheel nuts it will need to force the paint out of the contact area of your rim.... if it doesn't your rim will come loose as the paint gives due to use 2

I have painted them now so I will keep checking the torque.

But its not a biggie lol with the nuts off kick your tyre a bit and they pop loose
Anderzander
It’ll compress and seat very quickly - and you’ll still have the benefit of protecting the rest of it from rust.
smallfry
For many years I have always cleaned paint and rust off the surface and painted on Rocol J166, a heavy duty copper antiseize grease (they have changed the name though) Never have problems with wheels seizing to hubs, or corrosion problems. Use it on studs/bolts/nuts too. Wouldnt use paint of any sort, will ultimately chip, and I have concerns about seating the wheel properly. Also, note that manufacturers never paint these surfaces.

landroversforever
No issue painting IMO. As Anderzander says... the wheels are painted or powder coated in the case of steels and no one cleans that off before fitting!
