Whats great with these products is that once they are installed, you don't have to do anything they automatically protect your entire system! Norton, Zone Alarm and lesser names are resource pigs that are not worth the money. I do question how good these free anti virus programs are, are you really getting the full package and are they really protecting you? Better off buying. Todd. Eightpot Posted June 12, 2008 Share Posted June 12, 2008 Was speaking with an ex Microsoft guy who now works for HP at work the other day (fairly senior in product development etc) about AV software - he always wipes Norton off any of his PC's and installs AVG for all the reasons previously stated- Norton too big, lumbering and fairly useless. Yes, they are full versions, the reason they give it to you free is because all the home users act as one huge group of beta testers for their corporate products, a win situation for both parties. So much so that if a PC does have problems, the first thing to check is if it is running Norton. The number of applications that mention Norton on their tech support pages as a factor in issues is incredible. Computer Associates: don't touch. Low detection rate and zero fix/uninstall info on their web site. Missed viruses and trojans that others spotted. Clunky and hard to use. McAfee: awful tech support, they just don't answer the phone. I returned their product and demanded a refund from our reseller. Trend: This is what we are running across our 4 sites (IPSEC VPN tunnels) and so far it has been great. Tech support is very good, high detection rate and easy to use. Works nicely over the domain and for remote users. Excellent web site with detailed virus fix info and reg edits. Sticking to a few rules: 1: No Porn 2:No Porn When you really look into any anti virus its just as vunerable as the next. dreadnought110 Posted June 12, 2008 Share Posted June 12, 2008 We had norton on this laptop and it started crashing so took it in the computer shop said the poor thing was screaming with the amount of trojans etc.. that had got past the norton me brothers computer completly crashed due to norton and also me mates we are all running avast now and seems stunning!! Ivan Posted June 13, 2008 Share Posted June 13, 2008 I use Kaspersky as well. Used to have Norton but when it expired I could not renew it as their website kept screwing up!! So I tried to delete it and it would not delete off the machine. Eventually I got a new machine and would not touch Norton with someone elses bargepole let alone my own. Kim Horsevad Posted June 16, 2008 Share Posted June 16, 2008 For anyone running a linux/unix type enviroment as a router/internet server/proxy/whatever... a small modification to the IPTABLES firewall blocking all ASCII references to cmd.exe and cmd32.exe usually block around 90% of computervirusses. A simple and generic IPTABLES command for such blocking would be: iptables -I FORWARD -j DROP -p tcp -s 0.0.0.0/0 -m string --string "cmd.exe" One would probably want to expand that a little - adding some logging and such.... If the desktop enviroment also is linux there are no specific reason to implement such blocking. It is only to protect fragile windows-installations. Considering Kapersky Internet Security Suite AVG Internet V8.0 security Suite Panda Internet Security Avast - but thats both free but nothing other than AntiVirus ? so what to go with it ?? AVG 8 free version gives good Antivirus cover. Vista / XP built in firewall is good at stopping things coming inbound. (Very few, other than dedicated Firewall products stop outbound issues - But you've already been infected by this point.) "Cheap and effective" Panda Antivirus I personally rate and have had it looking after Virus protection on my machines at home since 2005. It now has Firewall capabilities but I only switch that on when mobile. I have router / hardware firewall looking after the house and network. "I trust it bus it costs" PCTools do a good Spyware / Malware product and have added antivirus, but AVG has caught more stuff Virus wise. It's usually a fight between AVG and Panda to tell you first... "Me Sir, please choose me sir" syndrome. "Also trusted but is costs" I believe paying for good cover is worth it. If you lose all emails, pictures, filthy V8 porn etc. it costs to get it back. Well worth stopping it ever getting there. Avoid Norton and McAffee. Whatever you do, have a back-up programme for all valuable data on the machine. At worst, you only lose a little. (Portable USB hard drives are cheap now and if switched off when not in use, should give many years of safe backup - Subject to fire, flood, being driven over by a 90 on Simex etc.) Neil Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Some of those on that list are applications that try and take control of your life, restrict what you can do to some extreme levels.... "No Mr Hybrid.... I will not let you choose if you can use your home network, Wifi or data card... I have control Muuahhhhhhhaaaa!!!" Or "No Hell type person, I will not let you have that file attached to your email.. It may be harmful, it may not, but because of the file name your friends thought funny, I will keep it as mine... ALL MINE......." They might be great at stopping / detecting virii, but they may also sap system resources, slow down the system etc. You should ask people for their experiences... A lot have already fed back and I would listen to some of them.. Many voting for AVG, AVAST, NOD32 etc as I scroll back. All doing well in the real world.... Have you ever bought a car that was advertised as "Car Buyers best buy recommendation" ? A decision based on what someone who knew little about cars but nice glove compartment they thought they liked, even though they chose a Land Rover for themselves.... They use Highjack This Ccleaner and a Firewall (Free) called Online Armour - means zip to me However : ALL seem to agree Norton are losing the plot and slow down even new big spec PCs ZoneAlarm is also seen as slowing machines down and overbloaty now compared with a few years back Most seem to go 'Uuugh' when you mention McAfee ALL say Yep I need to have cover Quite a Number have said KAPERSKY is a tad flakey and they have known new machines die literally on loading it - most say hold for V9 which is only in Beta Testing (whatever that means) at the mo.... MANY say AVAST is very very good, ....some say better than AVG which also is top listing - and both could be free SPYBOT http://www.spybot.com/en/index.html search & destroy comes up time and time (and its free) again as something to have ? So what about say AVAST for Antivirus, SPYBOT .....and is windows Firewall in Vista OK ????????????
