Rob110 Posted January 27, 2009 Share Posted January 27, 2009 Hi Thought i would treat the 90 to a new exhaust and while i was at it fit straight though pipes like everyone seems to be doing these days (i do like the roar you can get when you give it some lol) Now its a late 300 tdi 90 so has a cat and a mid box, but no rear boxes, i believe the late 300's were similar to a td5 tail pipe. I ordered a non cat pipe from paddocks and a mid box replacement pipe from ebay. Went together a dream but when i started her up is was like a tractor with no exhaust on, no way could i live with that. bit like what a chav would do with a diesel astra. i have since put the old down pipe with cat back on and the sound level is just right, got that throaty roar on full power. but the cat pipe is in poor condition and i hear that the cat can become blocked and reduce power but if i get rid of it then its too loud. Have any of you fitted smaller silencers in place of the cat to give more power than having the cat but not having a crazy loud exhaust note? What have you guys done? Interested to hear your feedback and I might start with leaving the cat in place. I've been looking for a slimline silencer in the right bore size but can't find one - should be easy enough to cut & weld into the straight pipe. JST Posted January 28, 2009 Share Posted January 28, 2009 300s did have a rear silencer tucked up between the rear chassis rails, why not go straight through down pipe and mid pipe and fit the rear silencer? ran a similar setup on my td5 (non cat front and straight through mid) was fine like that. patch1 Posted January 28, 2009 Share Posted January 28, 2009 My 300 90 is an early one ('96) so had the middle and rear silencer with no cat at the front. After routing around under my dads 90 ('98) which has a cat I realised that I could fit the middle and rear pipe part of the cat system to mine, which is all the de-cat pipe is anyway. So when my middle section died 12 months ago I did just this and it seemed to give me abit more power, better respons (getup and go) and a nice but not obtrusive note from the rear. If you remove the cat and the centre silencer, but leave the resonator in place, the noise is acceptable with no exhaust restriction other than that created by the turbo. Les. Rob110 Posted January 28, 2009 Author Share Posted January 28, 2009 Mine does not have a rear resonator and when i looked under a early 300 the mid box was different so i dont think i could fit one if i wanted. Also i think the diameter is slightly smaller if i remember correctly Will have a look at a td5 rear section may be that will fit mine. or i could replace my cat with a cherry bomb??? but would this just put the restriction back the same as the cat? 02jcole Posted January 29, 2009 Share Posted January 29, 2009 I too am having the same problem, I brought my l1997 300tdi 90 with standard exhaust, I then replaced the down pipe with one of IRB developments (porny) de-cat down pipes and more recently fitted a stainless steel straight through centre section. My exhaust is the late one with only the one silencer behind the gearbox, I had the straight through centre pipe on for one day and had to take it off as I couldn't stand the noise. I plan to either get a free flowing silencer welded into the centre section or if it will fit a TD5 tailpipe with resonator box? James. nicks90 Posted January 29, 2009 Share Posted January 29, 2009 drive my 300tdi with no cat - no centre box and no rear box. in fact the whole pipe is virtually straight from front to back with just a smooth curve over the back axle and exiting at the rear crossmember. cant hear the exhaust over the stereo blatting out metallica and SOAD - so who cares what people in traffic jams think! Michele Posted January 29, 2009 Share Posted January 29, 2009 Chopped one bit at time off the tailpipe due to some rust in the early years, and then removed the whole silencer and had a goosneck tailpipe made (raised and exits over the axle) and recently removed the cat,all straight through now, after the cat removal the truck seems "slightly" better (or maybe it's just the 33"s which are now more 32"s ) I like the noise and it's not that terrible unless I nail the throttle...or maybe it's me getting deaf a tad Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

jack54turbo Posted January 29, 2009 Share Posted January 29, 2009 i placed the monthly order with mm4x4 and paddock 2day! wanted to do decat etc(1996 defender) so when david and chris said just do the decat dont bother with the silencer removal its too loud of course i just wanted it more lol(only 18!! not chavvy tho lol) did i just make a mistake? If you up'd it to a 3" pipe with no boxes, then yes its mighty loud with a good fruity bellow at high throttle/revs, but if you stick to the standard diameter pipe then you wont be that bothered by it. The turbo does an excellent job of damping the noise. sounds good (for a diesel) and as you're only 18 you wont hear the exhaust over the stupid car alarm beepbeepbeep music you lot insist on playing! bm52 Posted January 30, 2009 Share Posted January 30, 2009 bit older than 40 1995 90 300tdi no cat. fitted straight thru with new rear box. it is fine, loads more pick-up and i think torque. much nicer to drive. bit noisier on the inside and louder on the outside when you really hit the power. but normal driving it is absolutly fine. ps - i also have good hearing........still Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
