mmgemini
I wasn't aware that Land Rover made alternators..I understood they were bought in from the company that was the flavour of the month I'd buy the Prestolite one.

crazyfarmerboy
Personally i would go to the local scrap yard, my local one does them for £20 in working order, and if you get through 5 your break even (there is something else wrong )

ThreeSheds
Found this on the Keith Gott Land Rover web site if it helps. AMR4247 Alternator A127 Type 100 Amp. Defender, Discovery I, + Classic, 1994 on. Denso £72.50 + VAT That looks like the one for me! I haven't actually got an alternator to fix (if I did have I would have a go myself) and I don't fancy 2nd hand, so I have to buy new you see and at that price I can afford six of them for the price of one 'genuine'... GBMUD
I would buy secondhand too, or if that was not to my taste, a re-con one from a known good source - local oily motorfactor. Chris
leeds
I would speak to the storeman at my local friendly independent LR dealer and see what they recommend as OEM. Regards Brendan
Mr Bean
I'd go with the Denso at that cheaper price
tuko
I bought an exchange unit from the local dealership for the Disco. It's the same part number but with "E" at the end. It cost me half the price of a brand spanking new unit but it comes with the same full warranty and it's already rebuilt. If reliability and a piece of mind knowing that it will last for some time are on your priority list, then that's the route I would suggest. OH, yes I do think that shelling out a few extra bucks for quality is worth the bother. Todd.
FridgeFreezer
Anything with a real manufacturer's name on it. And no, Britpart is not a real manufacturer.
ChrisM_110
+1 for a Prestolite. I've had a Disco 100Amp on my 300TDi for years. Finally failed after a mud/water/sheep wee bath too many. Replaced with a Prestolite 100Amp from Foundry4x4 up the road from me, for £85. Correct sized pulley included. Don't forget to save your old pulley, just in case. Also the only job where I needed one spanner only. No hammers, PlusGas, Hiabs or seventeen extra hands required. Mmmmm, rewarding.
LandyManLuke
A127 model alternators are all over the place, in various flavours. Get the yellow pages out and look up auto electricians, alternator spares/repairers, motor factors etc. The last A127 I bought was 48 quid + vat. mickeyw
Errm, I'm surprised at the support for the Prestolite name . I have known many V8 starter motors of that brand be of equal quality to Britpart. If I had to buy new from those options it would be the Denso. Would also go with the local factor option.
