Insurance

I was insured with Adrian Flux, however when I went to Tesco for a quote (t'other half is with them) they gave me a quote 200 quid below Flux's! They do seem to give quite a bit of multi-car discount so if you have another vehicle in the household with them worth a look..

The other thing I found out is that unlike a lot of other companies (that does not include NFU as it happens!) you only need to pay for one 'leagal cover' as they insure you as a Customer for that whereas the likes of Direct Line etc you have to do it per car and then it was 2 x £26.xx!! :o

I haven't had to renew my insurance yet this year, but i have found that if you swap insurance then you can get much better quotes as a 'first' time user of thatinsurance company.

Changing insurance companies each year can be a PITA, but this year i will be needing to get the best for my money, esp with fuel prices heading up!!!

I've owned vehicles for the last 46 years & am therefore considered a safe bet but this motor insurance lark has become a joke. This year our car (not the RR in this case, but the principle is the same) was up by 46% & when I asked why was told that premiums were up 'across the board' due to (a) the high level of claims this winter & (b) a sizeable increase in personal injury claims. The broker who arranges my classic policy for the RRC (not due till the summer) told me exactly the same. I used an on-line comparison site & got a quote with a reputable company (with the same cover) for slightly less than last years premium!! & here's the best bit, my current insurer declined to quote  Rip-off Britain? too right

Just had my renewal quote in from NFU for the 110 and i'm in the same boat as the OP. About £350 last year, renewal quote of £720!! No accidents, no claims and no speeding tickets fro me in the last year, so........

I rang them and asked what was going on. They couldnt be less bothered. Said it was something to do with the amount they had paid out in the last year and needing to recoup that! I said that nothing they had paid out was down to me so how was it fair that i paid for it? No answer to that apart from 'thats just the way it is'!! I said stuff it, cancel the renewal, I'll find it cheaper elsewhere!

Now, better get looking for insurance as the current policy ends on 12th Feb. Tried Frank Pickles, but the mileage is too restrictive for me. Will have to give the other suggestions on here a try.

I just had my renewalls through for the Disco and the Nissan from Sureterm and they are 20 pounds LESS than last year. :D

Also had a payout from them for SWMBO Isuzzu that was written off, for the insured value with no quible, they even knocked 150 quid of the excess as the engineer took so long to asess it!:D

In Dec 2010 Adrian Flux told me they could no longer insure my 12 seater CSW, i got a quote of £350 off co-op, at beginning of jan 2011 flux phoned me asking if i had found insurance, as they had found a insurer that would cover the 110 CSW, and they could do the price at £250.00, as it was still within the 14 cooling off period i went back to flux,

I am covered on fully comp with business insurance for £250 which i am more than happy with.

Hmm, It seems NFU are going about things backwards, i'm sure the membership on here are a small percentage of NFUs customers, but i wonder if they'll realise that by doubling prices they're actually losing customers and therefore revenue in the long run?

It'll be interesting to see how things stand in June/July when our renewal is due...

The bloke i spoke to at NFU today was acting like it was a bit of a joke. He laughed as he said 'they arent doing it to be spiteful' and then told me a story about a woman phoning yesterday who had had a renewal quote of £1000, up from £200 the year before!! I said i dont suppose she stayed with you did she? and he replied no of course not!

Good thing too. In the event of someone driving into the side of you when you are stationary the co-op will tell you its your fault for being in a car then put you on hold while they rewrite the conditions of your policy. They are total c**ts.

My current Insurance is with Adrian Flux, but it won't be when it comes up for renewal in May. I had some donkey break a Mirror driving like a..well a donkey..he crossed the white line and bam..reported it to the Police for a failure to stop as the hire company the van belonged to just gave me verbal on the phone.

Anyway, I called up Flux to let them know, as I knew the Police would get in touch, explained that I would not be putting in a claim as I had given Halfords a tenner for new glass. Next thing I know is I get a premium hike in the post as the "accident" was "in London" and I hadn't told them I would go into the city, they wanted to ADD £439.12 to the Policy FFS. Called them up immediately and I explained that Waltham Abbey is Hertfordshire and I never drive in London as they have things called trains that travel underground...it took multiple phone calls and three weeks for them to understand this point...also a threat that I would tell the story on Land Rover forums (oops) and my then employer (News International) who I'm sure would do a nice piece in one of their news papers, I also through in Watchdog for good measure.

When it was resolved I thought, ok, it was an error...when I checked my bank account, the cheeky goits had took £126 from my account..the monthly payment should have been £68.25! The woman on the end of the phone explained that this was due to adjustments they had to make to the policy as I was using the truck for work purposes, I explained I did not use the truck for work, I had a company car and driving two at the same time, whilst I like to think I'm a good driver (don't we all have delusions), I'm not that bloody good. Anyway, they refunded the difference, then the next month, same again, but this time it was only £75.93. Called them up..it was adjustments made as the area we live in had been reclassified...WTF...I tried to explain that this was the address when i took out the flipping policy, they cannot change it just like that..well they said if I didn't like it I could cancel the policy, but then I would have to pay the outstanding balance on the policy. So I would have to pay for the Policy if cancelled, but not have it!! And they called Dick Turpin and highwaymen!!

Needless to say in May Adrian Flux can go flux himself :D

My renewal went up a bit but not a significant amount. I haven't had the time to shop around and am happy with my policy as a whole. Glad I didn't bother really as I don't think I've done too badly having read some of the posts on here.

I tried the NFU last year and they quoted me a ridiculous amount. They kind of suggested that they were moving away from insuring members of the public as it was too costly and that the higher premiums was a result of this. I wondered at the time if it wasn't so much the result but the method they are using to move away from insuring private individuals.

It is with some regret, after six years, that I have to let you know we are not renewing our Private Car policy with you this year due to the NFU’s stance on their required premium.

My 2penneth![/font]

Good letter my friend, I'm eleven years your senior & there is certainly no loyalty in this (or any other) business, gone are the days when drivers stuck with the same company year after year. My premium for the M....o increased by £145 for the coming year  but when I told them that I'd had a quote at less than last year they (Saga) had the nerve to say that they would undercut it by £1! Too bloody late mate & I've a long memory too! The RRC's 'classic' policy is due in the summer so watch this space.

  • 3 weeks later...

So, perhaps I spoke too soon earlier when I said I had renewed with Footman James for £238!! I rang them today as I need a quote on my other car and just wanted to check one thing with them – the 110 has 11 seats (fitted from the factory) and I wanted them to explicitly state they would cover this since I’d assumed they knew its seat number from the model that was on their system. Oh no sir, the maximum we insure is 8 seats....my heart sank a bit so I said, ok, what if I take the rear seats out?? The reply was that since it was a factory 11/12 seater the capacity to carry 11 people remains and I could just put the seats back in….I said yes, but then I would not be insured so that would be stupid. They still refused to cover the vehicle. I asked them how many CSW owners they had on their books that thought they were covered yet would not be in the event of an accident because they did not insure 11/12 seaters? They did not know nor seem to care! It’s the standard vehicle so people don’t declare it as a modification!

I rang Lancaster – same problem, 11 seats, cant insure you sir – I asked them why they claim to be specialist 4x4 insurers yet don’t seem to cover one of the 4x4s they claim to be a specialist for – no real answer to that.

Sureterm were a joke – I really need business use on the policy as I occasionally use it for work travelling between farms when I’m being a farm vet. They said if the vehicle has modifications, they would not cover it on business, just SDP. So you cannot apparently have a modified 4x4 with this specialist insurer that you commute in or use for business. I’d have to have a car policy for that, but they wont cover me on that because my 110 is modified! I told them they were wasting my time and moved on to Flux.....

Flux to be fair quoted me, with all of the modifications (nothing extreme – 200tdi instead of 19J, RRC seats in the front, overdrive and uprated intercooler). They wanted £400 – underwritten by Equity Redstar. This was the same company that Footman James had quoted me £238 for.

Anyway....I rang Equity Redstar directly and to cut a long phone call short, they wouldn’t insure me because of either the modifications, or the number of seats. Figure that one out!!!

My previous insurance was through NFU (the national call centre) and they wanted £720 at renewal (doubled from last year!). However, my house insurance is with the local office so, more frustrated than a frustrated person I rang my NFU local office (Cheshunt, Herts and spoke to Vanessa). She accepted all the mods and got the quote down to £400. Still an increase on last year, but looks like this is who I will be going with (again!!)

What do you all do regarding the 12 seats? – mine is a factory 12 seater (now 11 seats as the middle front has been removed)as, i beleive, are most 110 CSWs above a certain age. Although this is not stated on the V5, I daresay an insurance company would be able to confirm it was a 12 seater and therefore invalidate your insurance if they chose. Because I bothered to check with Footman James, they wouldnt insure the vehicle even though it is factory spec and other than Flux, none of the other ‘specialist 4x4’ insurers would cover it – EVEN IF I REMOVED THE OFFENDING SEATS!!! Kinda wish I’d said nothing now, but even if I kept quiet about it, I would have run the risk that I could end up uninsured in the event of a claim and I sort if assumed that ‘specialists’ would know the facts!

have you ever been declined insurance.....yes or no ?

seems you need to answer that as yes from now on. I dread to think what hassle that will cause. I'd remove that from your post in case Google finds it and possibly an insurance company.

You could argue that you weren't declined insurance but you car type was. The wording and meaning of this question is unlcear to me but its seems the answer is yes in your case.

Isn't that re. refusal on a personal basis? Bad credit rating etc?

With regard to the seats, I wouldn't have bothered with it. As far as I'm concerned if I tell them it's a 1993 110 CSW and they don't ask me how many seats it has then that's their problem. It's up to them to ask when it comes to their silly little personal rules. Modifications we are obliged to disclose, but there's no need for me to list the specs of the base vehicle as they should know that!

Yeah, i know. I feel like that, but its sods law that on the day i have 10 people in it (really not often), i'll have a smack and they'll turn round and claim its not insured! I dont know. Perhaps i should have kept quiet, but i agree they ought to know the base specs (especially as the mojority of companies i rang claim to be land rover specialists!)

I have a 9 seat 03 110 registered as a 9 seat and had problems getting insurance for it especially as I require work use insurance and the two did not bode well with insurance people. I asked how much would it be if it was a 5 seater and it worked out at over £350 cheaper a year. I therefore listed as a modification that the rear 4 seats had been removed the insurance company were happy with this as if I had put them back in I would be breaching the terms of my insurance.

I now declare the modification every time and it does not cause any issues, my insurance is currently £543 which I know is high compared to some, however what pushes the cost up is the value of the 110 with all its extras and the work use clause especially as that work is my brewery!! but is a lot better than the £800+ that it used to cost me.

Jason.

I dont understand why Footman James would not accept this on mine - like you say, if i put the seats back in, i would effectively invalidate my insurance - they just wouldnt accept that though! I too need business use, which i dont think helped in some situations.

Who are you insured with Jason?
