landy_andy
Rebuilds looking good.... what rad & fan(s) are you going to use ? I'm halfway through my D90 rebuild & am at the point that I need to decide between a mechanical VC fan or electrics (am running MS to on a 3.9, will be a 4.6 laters). Was going to get an Allisport rad but am not 100% confident that the twin electrics will do the job in summer here (BC, Canada)..... been reading up over the weekend & found that some owners in Florida are getting good results with the Flex-a-lite 220 and if you go for a slightly wider rad the 292 will fit on..... thoughts ? Mr Noisy
I struggled with an OEM rad and twin electrics but only on the warmest months in UK so upgraded to a HD 4 row OEM type rad. I then had my second set of fan bearings fail and got annoyed, plus it was never super cool, so switched back to viscous and now wouldn't have it any other way, so much cooling available at all times. muddy
Landyandy surley you can get a nice Ali rad with proper mounted fans from summit for a good price? Looking good bingy, id hazard a guess you from bingley? Will.
landy_andy
Landyandy surley you can get a nice Ali rad with proper mounted fans from summit for a good price? Not that are a drop in fit & have the integral oil coolers with BSP fittings. Did get a quote from Ron Davis radiators for a NAS spec one & it's alot more than Allisport. Ive got a duel fan setup, have them come on a different temps so they only come on when/if needed, also got an override so they can be turned off or on. didnt cost much at all to setup, just a couple relays, thermostatic switches and a bunch of wire. Love the chassis roll cage mounts, just like mine as nowhere sells them, so I too make my own!Steve Thanks Steve, shipping is a killer to Canada from the UK.... esp for lumps of steel..... that's why I made my own rear winch tray, cage mounts etc..... was also easier to 4 link the back end too, rather than do a custom 'A' frame.... sorry Bingy, thread hijack off

Bingy
Onto the engine. Now that i had proceeded enough, i decided to start on the engine. I heard the engine running before i bought it. It also came with the full lpg kit, wiring and all pipework, together with the lt95 and transferbox out of a RRC. Starting from the top the 3.9 was stripped piece by peice and then scrubbed with a nylon tooth brush and kerosine to clean the parts. I did just one head to see how dirty the engine was and how long it would take to do. I carried on stripping the engine peice by piece until i was just left with the block. Then i began scrubbing, a dirty job to say the least. By the looks of the pistons these are the originals no marks on top. And the big ends look as though they are too. But the camshaft looks new, according to the lobes. But the bores look to have had a bit of extra honing done to them. I set about making a list of all the parts needed to rebuild the engine. I decided that whilst io was going about it i would get the engine top hat linered. I didnt see the piont in doing a rebuild then find that one of the liners was knackered or had gone walkabout. I rang loads of engine rebuilders, some had never heard of top hat linering. One well known, highly recommended rebuilding company told me, that if the block wanted top hatting the block was scrap! I was getting nowhere, time was passing on, i was starting to neglect and have secvond thoughts about the build. Thoughts had crossed my mind regarding giving up and selling up - even though i had done all the work myself. I didnt even venture into the workshop for a few months, I just decided to take my mid off it and work nearly every opportunity i could. After a few months, i went back into the workshop and had a long hard think. These never ending dark dreary days have to come to an end some how Sod it. A few new phone calls and another few months and it arrived. A shiny new performance stage 3 4.6 v8 from v8 developments Top hat linered, fully balanced and lightened ported and polished heads bigger inlet and exhaust valves Custom ground solid cam Now im happy

Bingy
Bit of an update So Once i had unwrapped the engine and got it onto the stand the first thing i did was to fit the Vr sensor loosly. then turn down the back of the front pulley enough to get the triggerwhell to fit niceley. As the engine didnt have the timing cover or the oil filter on, setting up the timing was easy. As with V8 there are a mark on the crankshaft timing gear and one on the camshaft timing gear. Siumply rotate the crank until they both are inline through an imagianary line on the crank and camshaft, camshaft mark to the bottom, crankshaft mark to the top. Just double check with the pencil through the sparkplug hole, Bingo. Put the bottom pulley on and the triggerwheel on. Spin the trigger wheel round so its 5 marks past the cutout. Mark the two holes through the bottom pulley with the pencil, remove and drill. Bolt back together then just check the alignment. Job Done Timing cover and new oil pump gears with new seal New water pump, timing cover, oil pump, bottom pulley, Vr sensor and brackets fitted. Valley gasket fitted, inlet manifold, injectors, fuel rail. Steering pump, alternator, idler, tensioner pulley fitted. Rocer covers and top plemum cover fitted. Sump, Engine mounts coils and stainless steel headers fitted. Onto the crane, flywheel, clutch, cutch cover and new gearbox input shaft bearing fitted. LT 85 cleaned up and bolterd to engine, together with 1.6 ratio ex mod LT 230 transferbox. Front wing removed ready for lift off Now this is heavy and hardwork on your own Still wont go in, removed wheel and front strut. Still wont go in had to remove headers All done, finally in with the gearbox and transferbox in the right position. Got a good 2nd hand early V8 wiring loom and proceeded to fit it. Steering column, stalks most of the dash is in,BUT i have a lot of issues of not knowing which wires go where, desite a lot of headscratching Need to get back to this, i have a good diagram but just cant seem to find a lot of the wires. All the pedals are done, just struggling to find the correct accelerator cable. Is there a proper part number or are they one offs? Trial fitted the gearbox tunnel and seatbox. Had to do a few mods to seatbox to get it to fit properly. (pics later) Steering finished. Brake servo ad both cylinders on. both brake and clutch pipework done. Fuel pipework just needs return to tank pipe finalising. The Start of megasqiurt wiring loom. HT leads sorted. Thats more or less where im upto....
