GBMUD
OK, so I admit, I am easily taken in. Even I have my doubts about this though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IV1mhdJAiXQ Any comments? Chris P.S. I have no intention of buying one, I have some big jump leads instead.
Rangy35
Yes they do, I have not used the specific one in the video but have a similar one, a bit bigger for a wopping 600amps. Lithiam iron battery, weighs 600/700grams, the best jumper pack I ever owned.
miketomcat
I'd agree they can but the one you've linked Chris would probably only work once, not charge up and then let the smoke out. It's in a blue box after all. Mike
GBMUD
There is a larger one available, claiming 600A output. The leads do not look up to it and the connector looks even smaller. Apparently science is marvellous... Chris
nickwilliams
That will be fine if you need to start a TDI which has a flat battery because someone's left the lights on etc., but I very much doubt it will start a 2.25 diesel from cold. Bowie69
As the use time is tiny, the leads can be small. Electrical stuff is very often rated at a current AND a time, say 600A for 10s, 100A for a minute. That's how they get away with small leads. I would think they are a pretty good bit of kit to be honest.
Maverik
Theres are a fair few on the bay of e if you put in battery jumper.
western
a friend has a similar [non britpart] one, it started his 3 litre Trooper for a few days over last Xmas while he was away from home 7 had battery problems.
Pepé le Pew
A colleaque of mine uses a couple of batteries from his cordles power tools to jumpstart his van. It does shorten the life of the batteries considerably though. Eric.
GBMUD
What a remarkable technology then! I guess that the days of a big ugly lead-acid battery are numbered - I already see Li-Po motorbike batteries. Chris
simonr
I have some LiFePO batteries for my quadcopter which are rated at 85C discharge - they are 5AH so that equals 425A OK the leads on them are not up to delivering that current for very long but they will source over 100A for an extended period. Something like this is thus well within the realms of possibility as a starter only takes 250A for a few sec. Si
Rangy35
Had Li-Fe battery in my motorbike for almost three years, not a problem at all, at a 1/3 the size and a 1/4 the weight it is fantastic technology/science.
rich broom
I used mine to start a BMW 325 in the freezing temps. Not even dash lights came on. Started it fine. Did it three times just to try it
Shackleton
The trend now is induction AC motors in home build electric vehicle conversions - as in say your BMW 5 series without the lump and with a Siemens AC motor bolted to the ZF instead. And all made viable by the advances in lithium batteries.
need4speed
Bloody electric vehicles! PAH! Very handy those jump packs mind you...
Shackleton
I don't know mate, the latest thing is what they're calling "Plus" houses. Them being ones that don't just save you energy, they make you energy. There's one recently unveiled in Norway (read worse for sun than here) that generates enough electricity off grid to not only power and heat the house every day of the year, but it'll also charge your EV every day too. I'm a die hard red blooded petrol head, can't help but be seduced by all that though.
Sheffield
There are moves afoot to increase taxes and charges for diesels, because officialdom has discovered they pollute the environment. When the diesels are all gone, I expect they will find there are nasty chemicals involved in these new batteries, and they will have to tax them.
