Challenge Buggy Build

Absolutely correct dan, I have been to challenge events and suffered smashed diffs and broken shafts. Take for example Jim Marsden at KOH - axle failures meant he couldn't continue the race. Having a vehicle that is bombproof and beyond pays. Even if I never win anything, im going to be at every event, enjoying myself! If i had deeper pockets id love some other axles, but Im not far wrong with these. Out of interest, does anyone know how heavy nissan patrol y60 axles are? ANYWAY! Slightly better pictures for those of you interested in Ackerman I've had 'cracked' off the brake callipers with a hammer, and had the discs spinning. All feels nice and 'tight' inside, clearly these axles haven't seen a great deal of use!- 49 replies

The 300tdi is a easy to "de-immobilise" Spider bypass circuits are posted on these forums. The stop solenoid immobiliser is also easily worked round. I don't think posting quite how is a good idea, but it takes around 2 minutes to do. The 200 is considered a more simple and robust engine, however the 300 is easiler to get parts for. IMHO Id have a 300tdi - just because there so common.

Challenge Buggy Build

Dont be such a pessimist! How many challenge prepared 90's come under 2300kg? not many. Im building this on a shoe string budget. I don't intend to have to keep paying for replacement parts. So yes unbreakable is what i need. The pair of axles, with tyres will probably weigh around 900kg gives me over a ton for cage chassis engine drivetrain and winches plus your odds and ends. I don't foresee a problem.- 49 replies

Challenge Buggy Build

I've just lifted them off my trailer with my skidsteer with a lift capacity of 800kg... it started to lift the back wheels off the ground. They are just a little heavy. information im gathering on these axles : 4x4 conversion using a front Dana 70 axle with Warn free wheeling hubs is used with the same 10 lugs as the rear, rather than 5. The Penman 'Tavern' conversion uses an open knuckle Dana 70 fitted spring over on the standard HD front suspension. The front axle has Warn free wheel hubs. This gives about a 5" lift over the stock drop beam front axle. The rear axle is the stock Dana 80 and I believe they both have 5.13 gears, but I haven't properly checked yet. I have learned that the 10-lug hub is simply a standard Dually hub, with the wheel stud flange machined down and the 10-lug hub adapter slid over top. It was attached using Allen head bolts (or normal bolts) through the back, to hold both the adapter and brake rotor. Basically thats ALL of the information on these axles I've found thats actually useful. The front for all intents and purposes is very similar to a Dana60. The 80, is well.. an 80. An absolute bruiser of an axle. People have warned me not to use it... but ive read it can stand 1200hp in pulling tractors. So im choosing to ignore these people. The 80 is designed to carry around 11000LBS of weight, it has 4inch axle tubes, that are 1/2inch thick. I can afford to grind some webbing off the axle and it will still be 100 times stronger than an ashcrofted LR axle. Im going to whip the cover off the axle and post up some internal pictures. See what the monster inside looks like!- 49 replies

theyre designed for a GMC Tavern armoured vehicle (same as plasticbadgers) The front has some weird "addons" which i presume the company that built the armoured vehicle did.- 49 replies

Ive got decat and midbox removal pipe, ive still the rear silencer. My parents can hear me coming home from the pub over 2 miles away over a hill with trees on. Then again its not as loud as some of these boy racers, Subarus etc.

I have the same problem on my grandfathers D2, leaky manual sunroofs. Would be interesting to hear a remedy before i silicone them up!

Dan, why not use the proven 603 pump, its freelyish available and is direct fitment? Get elements out an old transit 2.5 and your good for a fair amount of power. Or so I gather! -

My two local garages run big heaters all winter on waste oil burners, and on cold days theyre very happy to take it off your hands. However in summer they just look at you gone out! I've got a 400gallon tank full of sump/trans oil... oil burner project needs to hurry up for next winter!

Still, 50kg heavier than a 300 but double the power, with the potential for 4 times the power... Black smoke and turbo whining goodness! -

Mike, i believe that said engine can be bored out into a 3.2 beast. There was a truck that used one a couple of years ago, but i cant for the life of me who it was that used it. -

I've been doing my research.... im going to bin the whole idea of squirting my v8 because nothing beats a turbo diesel. Infact... i should be able to have more power and reliability from a om606 with 603 pump than a squirted v8. What was a thinking, petrol is for girls and lawnmowers. Dan, please hurry up with this, so i can learn from your mistakes! Questions, how heavy is a full dressed om606? I've seen videos on youtuube of buggys with 606's and hydraulic steering so clearly there are ways of mounting hydraulic pumps. This makes me excited in my pants. -
