  1. I'd just drop the head down to Hamlyn's - it's £300 for a proper recon after an assessment. If It can't be done then purchase another for recon. Give the lump a good service and then valet the motor - then get on
  2. I wouldn't use R clips - I would use the spring clips used on tractor lift arms. They are designed to work harden. The sleeve needs to be after the right angle up to the chassis section - not on the main torsion section. Might be better to weld in nuts onto the chassis mount and simply undo at the top...
  3. Quite likely... New one will be about money, saving it and making it. The engine will be in house or Jag based. Independent suspension. Monocoque with a sub chassis (at most). If there even is a replacement
  4. It's worth noting he did ask to see the screws they put in as he was concerned that they might be a). Metric, not imperial; b) not countersunk; and c). not stainless
  5. Ladies and Gentlemen Just to let you all know, the reason Mike hasn't been around for a while is that a week or so back, he broke his hip. I believe he was showing off to the ladies showing them parachute rolls but I can't confirm this He was released form hospital today, so will be on later - with pictures We have started the ball rolling to get him a clutch servo, which should be on its way to him within a week or so....
  6. Generally the series boxes break because of either age, mileage, poor maintenance history, lack of mechanical sympathy by the operator - all four are gear box killers. But Series boxes, like early Jeep 3 speed manuals were built for a different time. I like simple. Overlanding generally requires simple; although not always. Not so Off roading. Both require strong mechanicals (or electricals), a high level of good maintenance history, quality parts, quality oil and above all mechanical sympathy. I agree with HOSS about electrics. Why not use it. Most of us moan about electrics simply because we heard it was okay to do so and we don't understand why they go wrong. I admit I don't understand modern electrics - but it's because I don't want to. Like getting exhausts built - I can pay someone to do that.

  8. Mayhap I look at things differently to some. Overall the response throughout the galaxy has been good. I used to enjoy TG, then it got stupid. Three guys who loved themselves, wanting worship of the masses for doing stupid things. The Southern States Challenge and the Bolivia Challenge to name but a few. Mindless drivel. Complete lack of technical content. Even poor hooning skills. What have we got now? Similar formula but lacking three self loving cockwombles. More tech, humour, an American who can talk sense! I though Matt Le Blanc was a brainless actor - I was wrong, he can drive and he can do irony. I'd buy him a drink. Evans is beyond the old TFI image. He's grown up. Professionally he's a perfectionist ( ask my wife, she used to be his prompt), he does a good show... It was slick for a first and is unlikely not to get smoother and slicker... I'm giving it a chance. Added to which I never was one to follow the sheep....

  10. I go through phases. A 3.0 NAD 617 coupled to an Auto-box in a SWB 416 with grippy tyres is a thing of awesome capability and soooo easy. An LT77 with a 200 Tdi is also awesome and soooo much fun

  12. But Mo at least you got a free set to replace them... I fit SuperPro to my vehicles and all my clients vehicles. I've had one bush fail in 12 years. That was a panhard rod bush. It failed due to the bush sleeve rusting itself to the bolt. It was changed for nothing despite being over 5 years old...
  13. Auto off road is easier, Manual trickier and requires more skill. So not better or worse...
  14. Some years back I was doing some driver training for Toyota Gibraltar Stockholdings - the guys who supply white Toyotas for aid organisations. We ran 100 Series GS vehicles; V8 for the State Department (loaded with luxury necessities) and non turbo Aussie spec for the rest. We also ran 78's and 79's (Troopies and Third World APC's). The best of the lot for all round reliability, off road and on road capability, fuel economy, comfort et al was the RoW spec Hi Lux crew cab, fitted with a 2.8/3.0 NAD, TJM Suspension, rear e locker and front LSD, TJM bumpers and some blast blankets for ballast - fantastic truck. Despite this I'd sell a kidney for a 70 series Troopie
  15. I use the rather snazzy but waterproof audio circuit breakers from 12 Volt Planet they do 30 to 700amp. I sat down with a pencil and worked out the maximum draw on the two systems - aux and main, then rounded it up a tadge

  17. If you remove the tab for the locking blt. then do what the Extreme 4x4 receiver hitches have - drill a hole in the side of the receiver tube and weld a nut over it

  19. Never really liked the 120 and it's proclivity to rust faster than an early 90's Disco by the sea... I used Hi-lux's for years as work vehicles. A piece of kit to trust. So a Surf is just a hi-lux with nice seats
  20. If I sell the Disco I will get a surf. Most likely a 2.4turbo or an early 3.0 turbo Always liked them - simple, cheap, tough, good enough off road to lane and overland, loads of space inside, comfortable
  21. Also worth pointing out that due to the lardy nature of a D4 or L322 you can't tow 3.5tonne if you have a passenger and hand luggage
  22. The 4.3tonne carrying capacity Chevy truck form the 1950's is quite common - but it weighs 5 tonnes unladen
