i have found not putting more than 75kg dosen't work i've got an old sweb roof rack and that is 50kg before putting any thing on it so 4 235/85/16 wheel and tyres and rack it may be over 150kg
if i walk past a parked car with a £500 laptop sat on the seat i'm not temped to brake into it.( may think what silly people left that on display). but 'Police Covert Capture Cars' are only tempting to the type of person that is likey to do it so,witch i think is a good thing in my eyes. gets them off the street and piching are land rovers.
how i read it was that the road noise will kill the off road tyres. as compound or the tyre can be changed, so i was thinking about getting some in stock as it sead that tyres allready on the road would not be a problem
trialers i've seen (and like the idea of) are running two stage springs with +2"or 4" shocks withch keeps the truck at a standered hight but gives you lots of axle traval

first time i took mine to my MOTer he told me it failed on hambrake not being ballanced after telling him it was a center brake he sead sorry, had have used them for some years now and thay do class 7 witch is good as i haven't change the 90, theres not much change.

thing i'd look at:
1:battery terminals
2:battery may not be holding a full 12v or dropping low when the starter or glow plug are being used.
3:glow plugs may have one not working.
4:starter (not very likely if it dosen't play up any other time).
it sounds just like it's 1/2 a tooth out on the timing i know you've done it but is there any chance it could have slipped
as you seem to be running out of things you can fix, change.
the boxes are the same length but if duncan was getting an ashcroft short R380 the auto box would be longer so the r380 would be less work
i'd go for the disco axles and in the 6 years i've had my 90 i've only broken one CV(and that was trying to hand brake thro a 5 gate RTVing on grippy stoney ground).
