Turbo heat shield - Defender 200Tdi

Recommended Posts

Haven't got one fitted to mine looked into purchasing one when I rebuilt her and like you saw the price and thought ouch , so never bothered with the heat shield but I did wrap some of this stuff

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10M-BASALT-TITANIUM-HEAT-WRAP-EXHAUST-MANIFOLD-10-STAINLESS-CABLE-TIES-30cm/301713780460?epid=13003107722&hash=item463f8aeeec:g:hVwAAOSwXaRaJMcV

round the exhaust from the outlet pipe off the turbo to the bottom just to protect wiring and pipes and I've had no problems .

cheers Ian

Not sure if anybody has tried ZircoFlex Form?

It would be interesting to see if it lives up to the spec below as a 300mm x 250mm sheet is £81.60 which is cheaper than the £250 for the genuine part which cracked and broke on the drop of a hat.

"It is now possible to create ultra-high performance, structural heatshields, thanks to Zircotec’s newest heatshield, ZircoFlex® FORM. This more rigid, stainless steel heatshield combines Zircotec’s proven ceramic coating protection together with the strength and ability to form structures such as heatshields, boxes and bulkheads. Thanks to its ability to solve multiple heat issues, including both radiant and conductive heat sources with gold and black surface treatments, ZircoFlex® FORM delivers a compelling mix of strength, weight, and structure with heat resistance.

In addition to the heat benefits, initial testing suggests that FORM can also provide acoustic damping, ideal for both longer touring drivers and endurance racers.

•Temperature reductions of up to 88% (when used as an offset heatshield)

•Tested to 900°C (hot side temperature)

•Core of embossed (type304) stainless steel sandwiched between two layers of Zircotec's proprietary ThermoHold® based ceramic thermal barrier material.

•Product Thickness - 1.6mm (+/- 0.2mm)

•Product Weight - 2.9kg/m²

Ease of fitment line-side, with a thin aluminium-backed and ceramic foil that is easily cut and folded to shape, by hand or machine. The metal construction allows the use of mechanical fasteners"

I have taken to making them myself - looks very similar to the later pressed aluminium version - but at a fraction of the cost of the £276 that they were asking when they were available.

I'd post some pics, but can't be sure they'll appear yet

Even with the std. LR heatshield in place, I have certainly had heat problems.

Apologies for not following up sooner. Thank you for the replies and ideas. I'm not as concerned as I was after reading that some of you have left it off. Initially, I'll have a go with some exhaust wrap stuff and see. It's not too bad but was just planning ahead. It's the second part I've noticed is difficult to find. The other one, for 200tdi Defender and I expect TD engines, is the original air intake scoop/elbow on the side of the wing, internal section, required for fitting layer model raised air intakes. It can be overcome though.

Thanks again.

Nice job Muddi Camel, is that just aluminium?

Yup.  Thx.

I bought a sheet big enough for 2.  I was thinking of using stainless, but that's a pig to form.

This one drops the temperature significantly.  When we get some decent hot weather again, I'll measure the difference after a hot run with and without.

I had no trouble ordering the wing intake for the left wing, but that may have changed in the last few years.  As for the heat shield, I've never had one and have had no trouble.  I did wrap the down pipe in heat tape from a motorsports supplier (Merlin, I think) because it was very close to the foot well and the starter motor wiring, but that's all.  I've had no car problems from it being missing, but I did get a nasty burn from the turbine casing years ago carrying out a hurried heater matrix bypass half way up a mountain - a heat shield could have saved that, but would probably have made the repair more difficult, too.

That looks great. I wanted one on my 19J so it looks right and I've also worried about the rubber coolant hose to the heater matrix straying too close to the turbo but was shocked at the price. What exactly is that material and where is it from?

It's embossed aluminium.  Ill see if I can dig out the receipt for it.

I had to stick the remains of the LR one together to give me some sort of shape to start with.  The original kept falling apart in to smaller pieces, so it's now stored in the bin.

I have had the beginnings of a small fire which I was able to deal with.  The other reason for this creation is to keep it looking vaguely original.

Can I ask how you formed the shape for the heat shield. I'm fitting a new exhaust and the heat shield I have just insults the rest of the engine bay. Would you make one of these on my behalf? 250 quid is crazy and it seems not many places even have them anymore.

Cheers

Andy
