western
I decided to buy one of these last week, https://www.flatdoguk.com/transfer-case-sump-cover~2197 hopefully to help my transfer box have a easier life & a bit more lubrication, as well as replacing the rear wiper motor & washer jet [see 'another wiper motor story' post] I've just finished fitting the new sump on transfer box & filling with fresh EP80/90 oil. so here it is fitted & ready to work. ianmayco68
Looking good western , fitted one to mine when I rebuilt the transfer box a few months ago , brought mine from Ashcrofts though as I’d ordered a load of other bits . It seals well , as the old transfer box I’d had the cover plate off 3 times and I still used to get a dribble of oil . cheers Ian
cackshifter
Also as a bonus makes it much easier to jack a transfer box.
DC_
I like the idea of cooler oil, have you fitted a temp gauge Ralph? Be interesting to know how much cooler it gets the oil?
western
No temp gauge, but the sump does have a hole for it [screw in plug on rear face] as in photo, Roamerdrive do this gauge kit for it, https://www.flatdoguk.com/oil-temperature-gauge~2195 not sure if I'll add this kit to my 110.
reb78
Its a shame they dont do it with a more attractive dial face in the guage. (Mainly removing the Roamerdrice text at the bottom)
Bowie69
You get any temp sender and matched gauge to handle it, but I reckon the stick temperature telltale stickers fridge advocates would be a cheap way to see if you might need it. western
May get some stick on temp labels, but my 110 doesn't do much 'heavy' towing, mostly A road, dual carraigeway & motorway runs, never had a transfer box fail on me. DC_
Nice idea, stick on temp labels? Everyday is a school day
Bowie69
This sort of thing, in case anyone was wondering: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TMC-2-Strips-Thermax-Temperature-Label-8-Level-Range-B-71-110-C-160-230/253783811418?hash=item3b16b1a55a:g:FjgAAOSwleNbXZaP You can get different ranges as well, the transfer box should be fine at 110C, but in most cases under 100C would be better for oil life
DC_
Hopefully they’re very sticky and after a clean with white spirits on the transfer box it’ll stay there. 😊👍
Lightning
Does the transfer box get too hot? My TD5 transmission has never shown any signs of distress even after sustained high speed driving (over three hours at motorway speeds) and extended off road driving in Spain with air temperature over 30 degrees C. oneandtwo
Mine used to get really hot in the summer on motorway after an hour or two - Allisported 300tdi with disco transfer box on a 90, the above sump did make a difference to the heat coming through the handbrake gaiter - I drove non stop to Scotland from Taunton last summer prior to fitting it and it was like a hair dryer on my leg I've got a TDCi now and the cooler doesn't fit but it doesn't seem to get as hot for some reason
oneandtwo
BTW the LT230 should have flanged bolts not bolts with washers - the bolts are designed to seal against the face to prevent oil weeps

western
mine is a 1989 vehicle, its always had bolts with washers, the current transfer box is a Ashcroft unit fitted a few years ago. items 20 & 21 in 110 parts book page 364 http://www.retroanaconda.com/landrover/parts_books/110/4_gearbox_transfer_box_p300-397.pdf
oneandtwo
They were changed to flanged bolts for above reason.
western
I won't be changing them, it's been leak free from the bottom cover since fitted. so it'll keep the existing fixings.
dailysleaze
Certain Disco transfer boxes had temp senders that illuminated a dash warning light at a certain temp (don't know what). They're mounted at the height of the input gear on the LHS

garrycol
That bigger sump will need protection if you head offroad.
western
ts stronger than the orginal plate & is still above the bottom face of engine sump.
garrycol
If that hits a rock at 20kph it will be history
western
I don't do very much off road driving now or drive fast of road hardly anywhere down here to go too, it's sits well above the gearbox cross member which can be seen the my 1st photo. I'm not overly concerned about it.
V8 Freak
@garrycol They are quite well tucked up and I've not managed to damage mine in the last 5 years.... Now I will admit I don't do rock crawling like them peeps in the good old "US of A", but do lanes and loads of unpaved tracks in the mountains of Europe.... Maybe Ralph's pic doesn't do the location justice
