Wow 😯 How did that happen ?

Apparently several of them were trying to get to a mast to effect repairs, he was the only one to get to the top,I think he was trying to hard........

Personally I think the axle is faulty, the weld is not great and you can see where it's pulled out of main case

On the plus side I now have an axle case which will be champion once I repair it regards Stephen

Land rover had a recall on front axles - end failures towards the end of defender production, they fitted these wierd catch brackets not to stop the issue but to stop the wheels from fully disconnecting in the event of.

Was also amazed when I found out what these were for after spotting them on a mates truck. Nothing like a bodge instead of fixing things properly!

for info

Recall LAND ROVER R/2014/092 - Vehicle Recall UK (vehicle-recall.co.uk)

summary:

Recall Date
2014-11-28

Reason for concern
FRONT WHEEL MAY DETACH

Reason for recall
It has been established that in extreme cases the front axle tube could fracture over a period of time. If not identified this could result in the detachment of the wheel and hub assembly.

Remedy
Recall all affected vehicles and fit additional brackets to hold the hub/tube assembly in place should the tube fracture.

P.s. was being sarcastic above ;)

Don't need to tell me that @Bowie69, would be seriously disappointed if you didn't, I love the banter on here, it's the next best thing to actually knocking it off each other in person regards Stephen

I love how you can knock up a "quick" winch mount of that quality :)

Thanks, won't need it after Thursday so if anyone wants it.....

And that reminds me I need to try and get that immobiliser off

If you aren't planning on dismantling it Stephen then I'd highly recommend flipping the head upside down onto the bed. Makes the centre of gravity much much lower.

If you want to remove it a large vice on the knee and using the knee to lower it help massively.

The guy has loosened the head off to move it in his shed so it will be removed totally and put in the back of the pickup. The mill is a bit heavier than standard as it has a vertical bed on it to house up to 3 driving heads at the same time
