LED headlights

Recommended Posts

My headlights are showing signs of rust on the reflectors and will need replacing before too long and I am considering replacing them with LED's to improve the brightness.

Can anyone recommend a decent brand which would not break the bank as the price range for LED headlights is very wide. My current halogen bulbs aren't bad on high beam as I also have driving lamps come on at the same time but low beam on country lanes isn't very good compared to a modern car and I am finding that I need more light on the road as I get older.

I got the Trucklite LEDs at the point my lights went the way yours have. They are the best budget and legal set on the market I think (or were at the time). Still not cheap mind. Do a search on here - their pros and cons have been discussed a few times. Other legal brands get quite expensive in comparison but may have a better light output/spread.

I have the Britpart ones and they are excellent, much better beam pattern than some more expensive ones I've seen. One failed due to a component coming loose with vibration, but was a simple repair. I would recommend them to anyone.

I wa looking at replacing my current lights with these https://ore4x4.co.uk/shop/ltprtz/headlights/defender-led-headlights/ from ORE but they'll cost an arm and a leg by the time I get them to SA.

So have decided on getting these https://www.stedi.com.au/stedi-7-inch-carbon-charcoal-led-headlight.html from Stedi, as there is a local agent in SA.

Only major difference is that the LTPRTZ have a 3yr warranty whereas the Stedi's have a 2 yr.

I ended up back in 2022 fitting Wipac Crystal lights with the brightest legal bulbs that I could find at the time but now looking at LED options again before the winter. I generally avoid Britpart whenever possible but their Lynx headlights do seem to get favourable reviews and are relatively cheap compared to other brands such as JW etc. The ORE LTPRTZ look very good on a couple of YouTube videos and are mid range price but they give a "discount" code at the end which to me says that the reviewer may have links to the company and be giving a favourable review. Has anyone fitted the ORE headlights or know of someone who has to offer an opinion. I also have 2 Hella spotlights fitted with 100W H7 bulbs switch connected to the high beam which are also now showing their age, if I replace these with LED combo lights without changing the headlights do you think that the mix of LED and halogen light on the road wouldn't look right. The current spotlights with the  high beam is quite good and it is the low beam that I could do with improving.

Take look at motorcycle equipment. They often have 7" lights to fit classical bikes and they are a lot cheaper.

They don't have the evil look of modern LED.

I used the LED of Louis.de

Sorry, wrong size, but good as example

Yes I really like the look of the ORE ones but can't seem to find any feedback on them other than a couple of YouTube videos.

Any opinions on the Britpart Lynx Eye headlights as I like these because they do not have a DRL and they are £200 cheaper than the ORE.

No changes are required to the electrics as the LED headlights have a plug with pins on the end of the fly lead that matches the halogen H4 bulb, and also they will draw a lot less current.

The Britpart lights I am looking at are part number DA6282 which to me don't look too bad. As far as legality is concerned, the blurb states that they are certified to DOT and E-mark but I have read elsewhere that it is not possible to be both. They also don't state an IP rating, so maybe this is why they are cheaper. My preference at the moment are the ORE ones but would like to get some real world opinions if possible as £540 is a lot of money to spend against £345 for the Britpart.

These ones?

Tbh I haven’t checked the regs for a while. I thought LED & HID retrofits (in post 1986 vehicles) needed to have headlight washers and some form of self levelling as well as an approved housing. But it may have changed.

That was the last I heard too.

I thought that the new regs only apply to fitting a replacement LED bulb into a halogen unit and not if the entire headlight is replaced but I haven't been able to find this stated specifically anywhere.

The regulation wording from the Gov website states

"Vehicles presented with converted halogen headlamp units first used on or after 1 April 1986 will continue to be failed."

Just found that this reg as been superseded to

Existing halogen headlamp units on vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 must not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp for light source and lamp not compatible.

This does not refer to complete replacement headlamp units which may be constructed with HID or LED light sources.

I have LED bulbs from Classic Caf Bulbs in my crystal headlamps, they are very good and a cost effective alternative to expensive LED headlamps if you have a pre '86 90 or 110.

I have these on my Defender 110, passed the MOT with them on just a couple of months ago, so they must be fine.
