4x4 insurance

Hmmmmmmmmm

The old insurance renewal dropped onto the letterbox today. I've never really bothered as most insurers seem to specialise in being hoplessly useless, and I just can't be bothered to put up with the hassle, and just cough up every year,,,,

BUT this year the Premium had jumped yet again (seemed to every year) ......... by a large amount. :o

I decided before I left work to e-mail a list of mods (did for the existing co) to a range of insurers.

Had some stupid calls from people who had zero idea what they were on about - just told them to b*gger off for the reason stated above ...........

Siad to them "I seem to already have a slightly hopless insurer, looking for one that actaully knows their ar*es from their elbows... :angry: and guess what - it ;aint you matey :P )

I then got a call from a very helpful and knowledgable lady (justine) from Adrian Flux.

THE PREMIUM with all mods both done AND PLANNED was 52% of the renewal I had :D

Not only that but they KNEW about LRs and had an air of "oh yeah and" when I mentioned certain mods, :huh: ..............so I said "Yes", ..............and 10 mins later job was done. :)

Oh what a joy, my existing insurers who I have been with for years (secure direct / snopwball) I have always had to explain things to, ..........chase, .............they often "Loose" letters and forms, .............seldom return calls, ...........and STILL on the renewal had the 90 down as a 3.5 V8,

when I phoned to query they said

"Oh yes we have it noted as changed in our records ??? ! :blink:

so why does it say 3.5 on the renewal AGAIN ?.....er unsure sir, we will look into it .

Yeah right, and Elvis will be helping you then "Uh-Huh" ? :angry:

It is early days but :

1. the premium is nearly half :huh:

2. the mods I wnat to do they have accepted and rated and have said just say when they are done :rolleyes:

3. have an agreed value (yippe) secure direct say "NON" :D

4. were frighteningly easy to deal with :huh:

5. I'm almost happy :unsure::P

I'd certainly recomend A Flux if your insurance is up for renewal.....

My experiencees of AF are mixed. Yes the policies seem resaonable, but they never seem to be so reasonable for renewals in my experience.

They also seem to take forever to send out policy documents. I've waited 4 or 5 months inthe past! Have to admit I've not used them for a few years so they may be better now........however whenever my insurance is up I try and call them for a quote and give up after 20 odd minutes of cr@p hold music.........

I get the 90 and the freelander racer insured with Snowball

So far they have been good as gold

When I first spoke to them I told them the car was highly modified and put me through to another department and after realying off all the challenge trucks mods and agreed a value for fully comp. The chap said its not that modified anyway enthusiast never clam which is why the premiums are not high.

When I rolled the 90 two weeks latter I spoke to the same chap to transfer it over to the 1.8 rally freelander (at which time they tried to talk me into compatition insurance) there was a £80 fee for the freelander and they were happy that it would be seen in mags and it had one the trophy class BROC. The chap asked what was wrong with the 90 when I told him what happened is reply was I told you enthusiast's don't clam.

Just wait until they hit you with a punitive "administration" charge to change any detail of your policy. Move house, change job, make a change to the spec. etc. NFU may be a few pounds dearer in the first instance but they insure you when off the road (if you were to roll on a site (non comp)) and make no charge for adjustments like change of address etc. NFU for me!

I use Flux too, used NFU for years in the past plus Sureterm. Flux have never charged me for changes to policy. I think you'll find as well that NFU offroad cover is only Greenlane or (if you're a farmer etc.) cover for field/track use. They won't pay out for damage from a pay & play site?

Flippin Sureterm though, got my renewal in last month from Flux, also got a letter from ST stating they could "definitely beat my renewal quote" Phoned, them up, wnated to know all the mods over the phone, I said "haven't you already got this on file"? Reply "Yes" On the phone nearly 20 minutes, " Sorry, we can't get anywhere near that" :angry:

I got rear ended on the M3 one morning and Surturm were a waste of space took over 6 months for them to agree to fix the £800 ish (I was fully comp) damage to the disco then another year to get my excess back.

NFU don't like young drivers as my quotes with them are around the £1500-2000 mark and I'm 28 with a clean licence living in a area with the lowest car crime in the UK with no clames since 96.

One clam from my wife when the freelander rolled off the drive and hit a BMW (the chap was not to happy as I zip tied his bumper back on the brand new BMW less than a mile old.) :P

Disco is £600 and the race prep(blue printed engine) freelander is £380.

I'm with AF for the lwt. Was wiuthg Pete Best but that was under classic car policy, about £ 10 cheaper but had no accumulating NCB.

The real test though is wehn you need to make a claim; insurance companies are good at siphoning money off you but not so when the table turn, not that you would be driving a table....

Adrian Flux have been great with my policy. Heavily modified and with an agreed value - which they agrred to after looking at some of the parts invoices :blink: - and dirt cheap compared to the last lot i used.

Been with them 4 years now, and never been charged for any changes to it :D

I specifically asked about that when I insured my Range Rover with the NFU - they said it's covered on my policy.

Ouch! Are you sure it's just young drivers, or is it some other factor? I insure my '93 Range Rover with them - admittedly it's only worth a couple of grand (although it didn't seem to make any difference when it was insured for four), but I'm 29, I have fully comp cover for any driver over 25, 22K a year mileage and I live in a relatively high car crime area of Birmingham. About £750/year, including interest for paying monthly installments.

No problems with non-performance enhancing mods, although it did take a while to sort out permission for the Megasquirt'n'EDIS, and I've got to get an engineers report done on that once I've installed it.

Edited to say: They don't need an engineers report into the engine change though... :blink:

I've never had to claim from them, but they weren't too bad when I had to notify them of a slight mishap on the M6 last year (shed load :( ). I did have to correct two or three serious mistakes in the details they recorded, but they did at least deal with that properly within their normal processes.

I use Footman James after having a slight difference of opinion with AF.

I too had a difference of opinion with them.

My advice for anyone using them is if you are paying monthly beware of their credit company if you decide not to renew. They may still take money from your account, this reactivates your renewal even if you informed them that the vehicle was not on the road. The next thing you know is you are getting a bill for insurance you did not want.

I was very disapointed by this because as an insurer they were faultless till then.

Liverpool Victoria (Frizzells) - fully comp, me & spouse only

£377 for the Disco

£330 for the Defender

Had to chase them up to close 2 old incidents (not my fault and no claim on my part) that were affecting my no claims, but now have the full 9 years again on both vehicles.
