eds
I went to a specialist dedicated battery shop a couple of years ago and they sold me a standard shape 072 battery 70aH 650 cca. It was unbranded but they proclaimed it's brilliance. It is just not good. In the cold it could hardly turn the engine over. It does not throw the dog properly and tinkles as it looses power. I have fully charged it etc. I was reading posts and have seen people suggest the Numax CXV-X 1000mca (marine cranking) http://www.tayna.co.uk/Numax-CXV-X-1000-Amp-P7632.html Supposedly marine cranking is different to vehicle cranking. Can anyone explain. Defenders are supposed to have a min 600cca. I have since read that if you multiply cca*1.3=mca. This suggests the cca of the numax is more like 800amps. Is there an obvious choice of battery? Can anyone help by suggesting a battery? Is this numax the best choice? Thanks Ed
PieEater3142
I had a 70AH 650cca that died on me young. Splurged a couple of years back for Christmas and got an Odyessy PC1500. It isn't struggling at all to throw the engine over in the cold at the moment and in the summer it hardly touches the crank and the engine is going. I think Devon4x4 recommend them as well (they have a section on them): http://www.devon4x4.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=38241&category_id=96&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=14 They're expensive but I haven't looked back, thinking of getting a second for overlanding in the 110. That's my opinion anyway after going through two batteries in the space of a year and a half the Odyessy has been amazing - especially as I only drive once every two weeks as well... PieEater3142
My friends came with two Numax and he hasn't had any issues from day one (3 yrs on and two cold winters - but we are southerners ).
mmgemini
Again I see I'm the odd one out. Bought my battery in May 2007. Flattened it August 2007. Charged it up slowly. Still working but this cold weather I keep the Ce-Tek on it.
Mutley
Numax from Tanya...Good price/service and good battery....apparently with LR biggest is best
Retroanaconda
The numax should do it without issue. But I would just go to the local motor factors or auto electricians and buy the biggest battery you can fit in there. Biggest in terms off CCA and physical size. Shouldn't cost the earth. Marine Cranking Amps is measured at 0°C, Cold Cranking Amps at -17.7°C (ie. 0°F). I have a battery out of a small truck in mine, it's never struggled yet! shotrock
I have just replaced the battery. Mine is Bosch 110AH 800CCA that I got from Euro Car Parts for £100. The same spec at Halfords is over £130. Have a search on line as I imagine there is one not very far away, they often open on Sundays. It appears to have plenty of power and have had no starting problems. Shotrock
Mutley
There is no hard and fast rule as to which brand/make of battery is best for you Landy... So long as it fits the speck required it should do...... Most of us by now know that a bigger battery saves hassle/bother and living with crossed fingers when they turn the key!.... So to cover all options and eventualities as said stick the Biggest one you can find/afford in there.....But remember, as much as we'd like they don't last for ever so you WILL buy another one at some stage! Tanuki
I'm currently running a Bosch 'Calcium' 110AH in the Tanukimobile. Its predecessor was a Japanese-made Yuasa 75AH which lasted 5 years. Before that was the original-fitment Delphi which only lasted four years. Bosch, Yuasa, and also Varta are all brands I'm happy to go with. --Tanuki. "CAUTION: Infinity begins Here!" eds
Wow that Odessy battery is expensive. It has a massive cca............ 1500! How does that relate to Optima red tops I wonder? Numax is less than half price. Do I skimp or spend!
eds
I forgot to mention I only have space for a smaller battery as I have the leisure battery in there too. I think the 110ah would be too big.

zim
You can get a good price on batteries if you have a Halfords trade card. Along with a warrenty if it should go wrong in the next 3/5 years. G
Oakmaster
I bought Numax from Tayna having sought opinion on here, It was a bargain 1000 CCA at 120 Ah for £120 delivered – the dodgy disco Tdi leaps into to life! now
honitonhobbit
I've just replaced a CXV31 with a Lucas VX Supreme (same as Numax) but I've gone for the 27 rather than the 31. The old battery lasted more than 6 years and is still useable (it's on a sidecar combination). My second battery is a Numax LV26MF. £ for lb nothing beats Numax
nicks90
I went to the unipart trade counter with the dimensions of my battery box and got the biggest that will fit. One I currently have is now showing its age at 5 years old and is starting to struggle if left in this weather for a few days. Hasn't failed yet but does turn over slower than it used to in winter. But for £55+ vat I can't complain!!!

Along with a warrenty if it should go wrong in the next 3/5 years. G You can still usually get them from a motor factors or online cheaper then you can with a halfrauds trade card though. Also if you look at the specs halfords own brand batteries are lower CCA and AH than other make equivilent models. Personally I'd go for something like http://www.tayna.co.uk/019-Numax-Car-Battery-P1725.html 100AH 850CCA and £88 delivered.
