studmuffin
Funny you should mention it but why is it that everytime you try to loosen a bolt anywhere on a defender body, you cannot get to the nut unless you have lots of patience and very small hands. I`m told it is part of the charm. LOL Barry

FridgeFreezer
Mike - you need better rivnuts & the air-powered rivnut tool.
Anderzander
Today I would like to say : Waxoyl is glorious. Note these wont always be positive (a few days ago it would have been Td5 tanks are bar stewards (to get back in). But the rivnuts went in beautifully with the Simon type tool (just in the cross member for mud flaps). And having fitted a new crossmember and the warm weather the waxoyl job has given me a warm glowing feeling that the score is now: Rust 1 : Anderzander

TSD
Mike, you of all people should know about smearing the outside of the Rivnut with Sikaflex Rivnuts are great when fitted and used properly, but that's not always possible outside a factory. Most common problem I've seen is an over-long bolt corroding on the far side of the rivnut, then pulling tight when removed. Blind rivnuts are good at reminding you the bolt is too long
mmgemini
Two things I do when fitting Riv-Nuts File a flat on the hole I've just drilled Put some Araldite on the Riv-Nut.
Lewis
The company I work for uses hundreds, if not thousands, of rivnuts on every product, so doing warranty work and upgrades in the field I get to see a fair number of spinning rivnuts. Mostly this is caused by one of three factors; incorrect installation of the rivnut (pulled up too much or not enough); fixing over-tightened into rivnut; or, most common, stainless steel fixing used in mild steel rivnut. For the small percentage of failures versus functional rivnuts I wouldn't consider performing any additional tasks like filing flat edges etc, it wouldn't be time/cost effective for the business. Also I cannot see any amount of sikoflex (or any other sealer) having an effect on the longevity or grip of a rivnut

Tonight as it was still baking hot and sunny I thought it was an ideal opportunity so I used aerosol cans of Dinitrol - also great product and probably gets into tight spaces a bit better but not as thick a coating. really easy to use. Net result - both are great coatings. In my book anything to stop my Defender from rusting is worth a try. Barry

Anderzander
For today: Aren't the self tappers in the footwells an arse when they are rusted in and the head rounds out before the screw turns ...... What do folk do ? Cut a slot in and try again ? I think it's exacerbated by the exposed thread rusting on the other side.
CwazyWabbit
I drilled the head off then replaced the screw and the plastic bung it screws into ..... although the new ones seem to be rusting again now.
Retroanaconda
Cut/drill off then new plastic inserts as above but I replace them with stainless Torx headed screws instead.
Anderzander
I've bought some stainless ones and was going to try a liberal coating in waxoyl to resist the galvanic corrosion. I might have a look on eBay for those plastic bungs. Anyone have a part number handy ?
Retroanaconda
They're only really in major contact with the plastic insert so I figured galvanic corrosion wouldn't be a major issue.
CwazyWabbit
You could also place a plastic washer under the head of the screw as that's really the only contact it is making with ali. The plastic bungs I got were quite fragile unlike the ones they were replacing so might be worth going genuine.....
Anderzander
Are these the ones: http://www.brit-car.co.uk/search.php?xSearch=CZA4705L+

I replace with Ford/ Vauxhaul body self tappers. For the floor. I use short 6mm screws, nuts and washers
Anderzander
You've described the replacement ....but what do you do to take them out ? (That's the arse bit) Drill the heads as Wabbit and Retro said ?
CwazyWabbit
Are these the ones: http://www.brit-car.co.uk/search.php?xSearch=CZA4705L+ Yep, thems the ones For the record I found the white ones I bought are fragile and crack if not careful when fitting but the red ones that were already fitted are much better. The ones I bought were BritPart, I made the assumption they couldn't get a bit of plastic wrong ..... my bad
Anderzander
Thank you !! Last 2 questions on them please : do they push through the panel or just sit below it ? could you get the drill between the pedals OK ?
landroversforever
Push into the panel
CwazyWabbit
Can't recall having problems with the pedals in the way but it was over a year ago, I have one of those right angle attachments for the drill so I may have used that.
