Recon steering box?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good source of recon steering boxes? I can't afford new adwest etc and the truck isn't used enough to justify that, but my box is knackered and needs replacing.

I see there's a few sellers on eBay doing them from £130 to £180ish, does anybody have a recommendation?

Cheers

An awful lot of "recon" stuff out there (not just steering boxes) is given a wipe with a rag / dust over with a can of Halfords matt black paint and maybe the bare minimum treatment to make it serviceable, then flogged on. I'd rather have a decent 2nd hand unit than a dodgy "recon".

There's no way I'm getting an adwest. It's a challenge truck, the only road miles are motorway to and from events until I can afford a tow truck.

Thank you fridge, I did wonder if that might be a better option

That's strange just replaced my steering box recently on my 300TDI with a recon unit which was exchange.

Came with a 2 year warranty for £180 as long as you send the old unit back (they arrange collection free via a courier).

I was delighted with the box great service and it works like a dream now with no leaks. I would highly recommend them and they are always in high demand so may take a couple of days.

Or you can take you original unit off and send that to them and they will refurbish that for you.

Only two points to mention, I was told the drop arm is a tad difficult to remove so bought a new one as replacement unit doesn't come with one. However, with some gentle presuasion, ease it oil and a decent puller I did get my original off so now have a spare.

The other thing when I came to fit the box the mounting holes where too small, apparently on 300TDI there are two sizes 7/8" and on later models 12mm. The replacement box had the smaller diameter holes 7/8" so had two options get smaller bolts or drill them out to 12mm, I opted for the latter and problem solved.

Suggest you check the hole diameter before you order and specify (or ask them to supply the bolts just in case).

Don't remember the company name off top of my head, but will look it up and reply to you in a PM later.

I have a used one complete (4 stud) with drop arm in my shed, I renewed mine about three years ago in an attempt to identify a vague steer issue, renewing the steer unit didn't solve the problem. It has no leaks, you can have it for some beer tokens if you arrange a courier, hope this OK.

Adwest or secondhand would be my advice - I've had a recon unit through a LR specialist and it failed in six months. The second hand unit was going strong when the car was taken off the road three or so years after fitting it, and though there is no guarantee with s/h, the price is reflective of that.

I can't believe no-one's going to step in and manufacture / re-manufacture replacements, there's millions of vehicles out there with those boxes and they're going to be around for decades yet.

Edit: The article doesn't really explicitly say they're stopping production, just that they're stopping delivering them to Land Rover.
