Hello Adrian,

Good to see you here......

Intresting bout the fit, and ground anchor bit.............

Tough trucks 2004 We choose to intergrate one of our co drivers into a ground anchor (Thank you Shaun)

This him invloed him being throughly unfit and the size of my house.......

End result

First place :P:huh::P:P:rolleyes::blink::D

No you are right, teams are getting quicker and the cars are getting to a very similar level (WHich i think is great)

Team work is proving the winning combination.

However said it before and i will say it again.......Portals bring em on! :P

Adrian you at the Baskiville challenge ???????????

All the best

Jim :) *Thread hi-jack over*

Jim,

Proberly not doing any thing until Muddy Truckers. Been busy at work (day job) and setting up a buisness (night job) out of hours (anybody wanting a horse box please check out www.hartcliffhorseboxes.com, ta.).

Ground Anchors - we got fed up with the 'normal' size units. They just can't hack it if you only winch. We have developed a monster version with a 2 foot wide blade that stopped our tractor on test. Intention was that we would take it only on events with realy soft ground (highland enduro etc). However it's far better (in our opinion) to the std size ones. Now we can winch up 95% of hills just on the winch. As I have a PTO winch, thats fast compared to an 8274.

Drop me a PM if you are interested, my brother could knock you one up!

Adrian

Be interested to see some pictures of that, living as I do in a land with no trees and lots of peat bogs :)

Be interested in a price too.... I can pull both my anchors out at the same time (chained together) with the Milemarker without any bother so anything bigger is definitely of interest :)

You're repeating yourself Nige :P

As I've said before there's nothing wrong with it, its just a different shape to when it left the factory. Only a couple of weeks since I last used it in fact - on the Blue Mountain trip (better than being pulled out by a Pajero, which in any case was stuck in the same ditch right next to me, and all the others were wetting themselves at getting me stuck in almost exactly the same spot as last time we were in that area  )

The limitation is the spade size not being big enough for v soft ground - but I worry if I doubled the spade size I'd start breaking something else, hence the interest to see what this "tractor proof" (mwahahahahahahaha evil cackle) one looks like :)

Moglite is gonna be along with a stick soon as we seem to be drifting eversoslightly OT again

Drifting back on topic, and accepting that I'm not going to do the mod anyway, what's the verdict on portal axles for very soft ground, or are they more a tree stump hopping sort of thing? I can see they would help, as you wouldn't be dragging diffs etc until much later, but I can also see you might end up "a lot more buried" if you ventured into ground that didn't have anything solid for 6 feet below ground level?

Speak to Jez bout Ladoga

Does not get much wetter and all the big boys seem to use portals.....

They also seem to have trucks that are 8ft tall as well.........

I rest my case

Jim B)

Ps: Adrian let me know if you do anything before Muddy Truckers.

Some pics of a st of Volvo portal on a 110

Attached are some pics that I had showing various aspects of mods to

fit a Volvo C303 front axle to a 110 Defender V8. This is not my

vehicle

The same person that modified and fitted this axle also made the same

mods to the front and rear axles that I bought it (I bought my pair

from

someone else who was intending to fit them to a rangie but that project

fell through).

These pics show the mods to the pitman arm, steering links etc, the

rotation of the diff pinion, the coil spring mounts and the 3 link

suspension arrangement (2 lower links and an offset to left upper

link).

The rear axle is mine.

Note this axle housing is the from a C304 (6 wheel drive), not a C303

(4x4), but has a C303 diff centre so the ratio matches the front. The

diff

centre is not offset as much as the C303, which suits me better as I am

using an Atlas transfer case (centred rear output).

The pics of the rear axle show the brackets for the trailing arms,

upper

A-frame ball joint and coil springs. The bracket for the A-frame ball

joint

would be a bit different for a C303 axle.

Regards

John

  • 1 year later...

Just tripped over this thread whilst searching for something else, interesting read!

First off I suppose I should add my name to the list :P

Interesting to see DirtyDiesel hasn't got any more subtle since his 9th post

Interesting to see an earlier incarnation of Al's build - wonder how much of that has remained in the plan / how many versions down the line we are from this one?

Interesting to see Will did have a working truck once

Interesting to see Jim threatening to enter TR3 two years ago, will he finally make it in 08? (Not being controversial, just curious if it's on the cards)
