steve b replied to landroversforever's topic in International Forum
..well I never thought anyone could chip a 60's series .... ah my jacket (oops done it again) I'll be off now Steveb -
Can't read that in the UK , BBC at it's best by the look of it , can you copy the article ? ..Bob Marley , another taken too soon cheers Steveb

What a great video and inspired publicity , those 4 guys are very lucky. There's also something deeply Kiwi about it all that makes me want to be back there , lovely stuff cheers Steveb

That's almost exactly the same design as mine just a little smaller Michael, very nice . It's amazing just how much can be split in an hour or two . I used Hardox 500 because we use it at work , otherwise it would have been S275 as you have done Mine was scaled up to suit the end user who does like to work his kit hard cheers Steveb

Ah cool , and btw good news finding the leak , probably should have said that before . Hope this is a sign that things are better than you thought all round cheers Steveb

Is that rtv sealer in that joint ? I'd try and avoid using it on any oil retaining gasket , if a piece comes loose it can find it's way into the oil galleries. I heard of a Tdi that had some get as far as the piston spray jet blocking one and causing piston meltdown hth Steveb

Thanks Twizzle , it was rather satisfying to build , and it really works well so it will be nice to upgrade it to stand alone operation probably keeping the choice to use the 110 still . cheers Steveb

Yeah I thought so too I just have a keynut on the wheel carrier , as with the wheels between batt grinders , bolt croppers , and batt rattle guns I think there is only so much you can do ... cheers Steveb -
...my guess would be the below bumper part of the 6x6 G Wagen front view grafted to the top of a defender ? The tyres look to 38" or bigger from the scale Cheers Steveb

That did cross my mind , the price of Kubota / Yanmar diesels is pretty high even well used it seems . Think I'll keep an eye open for a small diesel scrapper car , my only reservation is governing the engine speed under load then off load , I don't want the pump over-speeding . It may provide an ideal opportunity to add a steam engine style governor cheers Steveb

A bit of an update , we are now looking into making the splitter self contained , so I'm looking for a small diesel such as a Kubota, preferably with an hydraulic pump around 14+cc/rev . Any suggestions where to look ? And what sort of power required ? - I'd estimated around 25hp any pointers much appreciated cheers Steveb

exhaust manifold stud stripped thread in head
steve b replied to IanT90's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
I'm pretty sure the studs are M10 , the long bolts on the inlet manifold are M8 though cheers Steveb -

Aren't the studs in the side of the head M10? - either 17mm or 15mm nuts If you do drill first just make sure you keep it nice and square to the face cheers Steveb -
That would appear to be a 300 Tdi Nick , and looks suitable too . Why have you ruled out 200's ? .....if he gets one you may have to buy a JCB next to make a course .......... cheers Steveb
-
Keep practicing Nick , it'll click soon enough , the satisfaction of sticking bits of metal together cannot be underestimated , but I agree it's £60 well spent , while he's there see if he has time to show you a bit of stick welding cheers Steveb

Rod size makes a difference , more so for internal corner/fillet weld and vertical . With the correct settings and rod vertical down is considered acceptable on 5mm and thinner material . Smaller rods mean lower A & V and more chance to control the weld pool some pic's would be good cheers Steveb

Removing Marshall bodied ambulance back to carry out chassis repairs.
steve b replied to Ash.Witty's topic in Military Forum
Nice , I had a IIA one with a rebuilt 2 1/4 diesel on the road for 10 yrs , good fun . A beam on axle stands under the rear body behind the x-member and two building trestles with a beam under the front roof through the door openings , jack the whole vehicle up as high as is safe with the body/screen bolts undone position the stands and lower the rolling chassis back to the ground and roll out Is the os dumb iron bent ? Or is it just camera angle ? cheers Steveb -
Have a measure up of a RRC seat /pedal/steeringwheel position , for me they are ergonomically perfect cheers Steveb

Rear pads arent clearing rust on discs
steve b replied to Souster's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
If the servo has held it's vacuum you will still have servo assistance doing that . you have to empty the servo with a few pumps until it goes hard , then hold it down and start - as the servo gains vac the pedal will then go down a bit . I thought the brake rollers were fine on a t/box with a lockable diff Les ? and it's the viscous diff ones that can't be roller tested ? ....If you are unsure just whip the front prop off and run it in t/box difflock for the roller test . I suspect you will find the brake effort is up to spec , my suspect is cast quality being a bit towards the low end of acceptable - the spotting visible in the pic's suggests inclusions in the cast staining the surface? ....what does the collective think? cheers Steveb -
A visit to your local truck breakers would give you a air receiver of a size to suit your needs , stand it up vertically , use the plug in the end at the bottom for a feed out , with a ball valve tap to turn on and off , the one in the top end as the filler and one on the side to pressurize . If you can fudge a tyre valve fitting on to pressurize, the pressure can be set with the tyre inflator . About 30-40 psi will do it . check out the ones on one of the tool supplies www's such as Clarke or Sealey for pics cheers Steveb

If you can stash all the SII parts I would as it will just gain value $'s wise and you may want to restore it later in time ? You will need a complete B/H with all the parts incl heater and steering box - better than the SII box, otherwise it's a straight nut and bolt job . The SII wings will fit to it but you may want to swap the front panel and wings too ? My preference is SII for the wings and bulkhead but that's just me There are other mods such as SIII hubs- M16 Fine knock in studs that will take 8 spokes or modular without coming loose . In fact a whole front axle , or at least the swivels outwards would be a good mod - better kingpins too I guess it depends how good the bits are on the truck to start with , and how far you want to go Some pic's always add to the story cheers Steveb
