  1. Ah I thought I recognised the yard , been there a few times for a mooch around the used kit , lots of different stuff The 109sw looks alright by the way , clearly the best LR model in the range ...biased? moi? cheers Steveb
  2. ...some interesting rusty metal in the background of 2 of those pic's Sam cheers Steveb
  3. That's a great summary Tacr2man , all the info in one post , maybe worthwhile putting in tech archive under engine upgrades ? cheers Steveb
  4. how did you gain access to logging tracks in a national park ? ...any pic's of your trip ET ? ...not travelled Scotland yet , but looking at road maps there are lots of good routes and ancient monuments - standing stones etc cheers Steveb
  5. For me , this place represents what the 'net is really for - not LandRovers as such but the free exchange of knowledge and experience from a wide global source , and the chance to network amongst each other based on common interest and get to know some great people Long may it continue Steveb
  6. These type of 2 post lifts - screw and nut - suffer from 2 main issues thread wear and bearing wear (those bits that support the cantilever load to the posts) Any significant wear in either will up the load on the drive motor , so worth checking . Is it running direct on mains or through an inverter . It should be good to lift one end at a time even with wear , and I guess the only way to is to try it on a full lift just off the ground and see if it restarts up or down and if all good an inspection would be a sensible idea for peace of mind . always a handy bit of kit cheers Steveb
  7. That's a good average on a decent road trip , not that different to a Tdi and I'll bet a whole different drive food for thought ... cheers Steveb
  8. What sort of average mpg does that work out to then ? cheers Steveb
  9. Assuming all the simple stuff is good - fuel filter , lift pump , tank breather , throttle linkage is giving fully open ( and the engine stop is fully off ) I'd be advancing the inj. pump a bit and seeing what it drives like . There are slots in the base of the IP housing and a plate on the side showing rotation direction - from memory it's anti-clockwise , so turn the body clockwise , loosen the inj. pipes to allow movement . When it's right you will notice the engine should have a slight "diesel knock" on revving up and you may also have a little black smoke out on the road accelerating . Going out of timing is usually due to wear in the skew gear driving the IP off the camshaft . hope this helps Steveb
  10. Yep , 7/16" BSF thread , UNF on the series 3 , is it the one in your avatar pic? ...I think it warrants a couple of pic's cheers Steveb
  11. that's a nice article , and lots of great photo's an epic travelogue cheers Steveb
  12. Welcome to LR4x4 , that's a nice looking 90 you have there . I'd say it could be Arrow Red - common shade around G or H reg cheers Steveb
  13. 2nd vote for steering UJ's , a good squirt of WD40 usually sorts it out cheers Steveb
  14. My OBA tanks are 2 small aluminium reservoirs off an HGV from the local breakers , each about 3 litres . They have metric pipe threads so std fittings for push-in pipe connections and a water drain and mounting feet . The pump was a s/h RRC air susp. one but it has given up and is to be replaced with a Tmax double pump . cheers Steveb
  15. Have a look on Dave Bowyer's www.goodwinch.com I'm pretty sure he does a base that will hook on to your towball, so a tow ball on the front bumper and front and rear Anderson sockets and you have all bases covered , as for choice of winch , a TDS goldfish with plasma rope is good or if you don't want anything so big the ATV winches spec'd at 2500lb are light and will definitely help getting mildly un-stuck ....or there is always a Tirfor ....a bit like the Beetle in the background of TG road trips , always there , reliable but slow and who really wants to use one ? Cheers Steveb
  16. they also have a grub screw that comes loose on the external end of the selector rod that holds the socket for the end of the gear lever , visible by removing the gearstick housing - 4 bolts . there is a gasket but it's not oil side / inside the gearbox. this has the same symptoms - hard to find gears cheers Steveb
  17. How about some silencers on the air intakes? and mounting it on rubber - you could use engine mounts . And make sure the Shelf it's on is nice and rigid , it's surprising how vibration will travel and translate to noise . A couple of years ago I mounted my 'shop comp. onto 3 pneumatic tyres so I could drag it around the yard , it's lots quieter just from that cheers Steveb
  18. Ah, didn't look at that pic properly eh ...and me an Engineer as well..... How old is the project and how much water does it hold back ? any cool pic's of the inner workings? Great pic's Naks cheers Steveb
  19. Looks like a great trip , some big climbs on those mountain passes . The water level in the dam looks low ? thanks for posting Steveb
  20. Hi and welcome to the forum . Your local engine reconditioner should have distortion limits for it , .011" sounds quite a lot . If you can get it skimmed use new bolts as the old ones lose the tensile stretch with re-use . Get the head pressure tested first if it's skim-able as they are prone to cracking with overheating . whereabouts are you , as there may be someone nearby who can help cheers Steveb
  21. ta Ralph odd that they spec two different widths really . A vee belt should be the same width as the top of the vee , if the bottom of the belt gets to the bottom of the pulley vee it loses nearly all drive friction . cheers Steveb
  22. An internal micrometer would give a more definitive result , but your initial figure sounds like too much clearance to me . Is it possible to sleeve the inner diameter ? it would need super accurate machining to work . Can you post up some pic's? cheers Steveb
  23. That's not your average Sunday laning , what an opportunity cheers Steveb
  24. What's the part no for your 100a unit Ralph? ..with the belt section and length you could try an industrial belt supplier - such as Fenner or Hayley , I may try one next time as I've had variable life span with Dayco and Gates My alt is a 65a cheers Steveb
  25. Post up some pic's of it for discussion . How complete is it ? And welcome to the forum also cheers Steveb
