Gazzar
Does any one here know how hot the back box in an exhaust gets? Ideally on a series 3 petrol?

Gazzar
Worst case scenario, I suppose. Boot to the floor, up hill, sand dune, Morocco, with a Sankey behind.

FridgeFreezer
A question like this makes me want to know what sort of mucking around you're contemplating?
Gazzar
I want to paint a mild steel back box. And was thinking of a high zinc 2K epoxy. It's exposed in the wheel arch, so I expect normal paint might not survive the abuse.

soutie
I have not used their high temp paint before but thought the link showed what you are looking to do. https://www.rustoleum.com/project-catalog/garage/how-to-paint-your-exhaust-pipe/
Gazzar
Looks good. I wonder how it would survive though. It's the physical damage from stones, sand and mud from the tyre that bothers me. I suppose I could put a mud shield around it, or something.
FridgeFreezer
Halfords, motor factors, etc. sell VHT paint for the job. My experience is that it'll very quickly just rust through it though, never had high-temp paint stay on anything that gets properly hot. dra890
I'm with FridgeFreezer on this - I tried using high-temp exhaust paint on an ACR silencer to make it last longer, but it still rusted through in about the same time as an unpainted one. mickeyw
We used to use stove enamel to paint the smoke box door on the front of a steam engine. That gets pretty hot, but it still needed a recoat from time to time.

JohnnoK
While it's no help to you guys in the UK being a South African product, my Moto Guzzi pipes were done in the black version of this https://www.autopaintcentre.co.za/product/plascon-coastcote-etch-primer-snk/ and the paint held up well under the heat, which according to the scar on my calf, was rather intense.... I'm pretty sure a similar product is available there.
