RDS ENGINEERING BE WARNED

I think with Lloyds, £10k is like their minimum order value, they don't get out bed for less :)

Our exclusion was no selling to the USA

That is near enough true, so you don't need the smiley!

The "no sales to the USA" exclusion is almost universal. In USA courts, damages are set by the jury and can be really silly numbers. so most insurers use it to limit their exposure. The silly product exclusions and cautions you see on American market products, like "caution hot" on coffee cups and manuals the size of phone directories, giving 20 pages of don'ts written for the hard of thinking are the consequence of a litigation culture, driven, as much as anything by no job security and the very high cost of healthcare.

Most Americans are on "hire at will" contracts, so no sick pay, no job security, no or limited medical insurance and very limited welfare. If you get hurt and you want to eat or get your injuries fixed, you will need to sue someone.

however americans are taxed ALOT less than we are - hence they have more disposable income to purchase their own critical illness and medical cover. So actually there is no real need for the litigation culture they have. Its just 'one of those things'

Just think if we didnt have an NHS in the UK.....

The number of employed individuals in the UK in 2009 was approx 29 million. That means the NHS costs each working man and woman approx £4000 every year on average. That £4k would buy alot of accident and health coverage!

anyway, we digress slightly

i still have a slight problem, i know the LR radius arms are the best/strongest but my car has a 4" suspension lift so as you can imagine on standard arms they are pretty much streched all the time and is doing no good for my bushes and castor angle, my springs have a banana bend going on

there must be a strong enough set out there somewhere surely?

The debate is about the materials used and fabricated nature of the RDS arms - I don't think we would have the same concerns with a good quality cast arm of similar proportions to the LR one but with a slightly different geometry (e.g. a bit of a bend at the trailing end, where the bending forces are virtually zero and it's all shear forces).

Without getting into too much depth, I'd ask why you need a 4" lift in the first place as you can't fit big enough tyres to a LR drivetrain to really need it. Getting some standard arms bent to spec would seem the best way.

its a rrc bobtail with 35" tyres, on full twist the tyres used to hit the rear crossmember which causes me loss of traction, in total it has 4" suspension lift and 3" bodylift and it just clears now

Or fit leafs!

With my experience of welding to radius arms I would advise against bending with any significant heat. In 'extreme' use I suffered minute hairline fractures where they had been heated.

Out of interest, did you pay by credit card..?? if so, your card company is liable under the lovely Section 75 rules. This is a nice little bit of legislation that makes it easy to get your money back if something fails to meet expectations.

Good guide here

Cheers

Wow this is quite a scary read, I myself have just purchased a set of rear trailing arms from Tarantula 4x4 not sure if they'll get fitted now anybody heard of this guys reputation?

These??:

I think it was said earlier in the thread, but arent these arms normally solid and not made of a bit of pipe? I'm no expert, but the welding on the small pic above doesnt look that great to me either.

Yes, they were horrid on the pair supplied to me, the bolt welded into the end started to twist when I hit the nylon in the nyloc..... the other one came out with a couple of blows with a lump hammer.....

The welds were totally inadequate TBH , and having looked at his site in the past the designs and execution still leave a lot to be desired....

I think this thread should be incorporated into a "Warning: Be careful what you fit to your truck" thread for newby folk attracted by some of these so called engineering companies who build 'specialised kit' for Landies.

It is important that people pass on information about reliable and responsible manufacturers and suppliers so we don't all end up paying the price for poor quality modifications: the hike in insurance premiums.

That RDS stuff looks like shhhhiiiittttee. shiny though... :P

We had a guy in the club who had issues with some offroad kit, cant say the name but its a small stinging thing found in deserts  !!, anyway the company tried the offroad use only tact, the magistrate didnt buy into that carp, paid in full...just go to court, get the form fill it in, don`t bother giving people who could`nt give a damn about you the time or oppertunity to wriggle out of it, the best 50 quid you will have spent in a long time...
