The V8 Porn Rebuild Thread

Recommended Posts

They will be too large in diameter. Maybe the heads have been machined due to previous valve guide damage....

Inlet Guide OD was too small for the holes left by the old ones

seems Mr Eales has 3 x sizes, and the smallest ones are not right for my heads

hoping this isn't a "3 bears" story for guide sizes, we think we know

what we need, so more are coming - when he makes them

Engineering shop also advised a few Exhaust Guides were borline too, so them ordered too :)

Ho Hum :(

FWIW. You might want to give Buryas Bridge garage in Penzance a call to talk 'big V8 into Defender' I did a feature a few years ago for LRW on a 90 Buryas Bridge built for a Norwegian oil baron fitted with a 5.3 John Eales unit, auto box and D2 axles.

When it comes to actually fitting into the car and getting it up and running they have the 'been there and done that' first hand knowledge that I imagine will come in useful!

I seem to recall they a few problems getting the engine to run right in standard JE tune and ended up at Mark Adams rolling road. On the upside the finished product was without doubt the fastest LR I have ever sat in!

Chap you need to speak is Lindsay Hanson. He's a really nice, no BS kind of guy who I'm sure will be happy to help in any way he can. http://www.buryasbridge-garage.co.uk/

Update :)

Seems as if I have have finally turned a corner

Broken, buggered worn out, and dmaged parts are slowing down

New bits growing, relinered block on engine stand and ready for build,

bits and bobs cleaned and soaking in kerosene and now the heads are

finished. New inlet guides, chemical clean, hours cleaning up vlavues etc

also couple of new seats, and then all valves lapped in (cleaned)

checked and reassembled :D

Dont wanna rain on your parade Nige but those heads look like they could do with being refaced...

Or does the pic make it look worse than it really is...

Pics make them look far worse than they are

also they have wills rings that make it a hugely complex job

Engineers said too many heads are refaced as a "matter of course" and just

add to a bill for no good reason, scratches etc will be sorted by Compositite

gaskets, and in this case the rings too :)
