Q plates

Recommended Posts

Regardless of anything, I'd have said something like Andy's moglite I'd have thought would have been a pretty good case for being registered as an agricultural implement.

IIRC it is then immediately exempt from SVA, mot and road tax. You supposedly have to do less than 5 miles a week on the public highway (which is probably true in andy's case!) so i'd have thought it'd be perfect!

I've no idea if this is what Andy has done - but it seems like a sensable thing to do to me!

Don't you only pay £12 a year Tax or somthing stupid

cool :)

I like Q plates, they are good for hiding the age of a vehicle without the expense and hassle of private plates, and most of my past cars/bikes/trucks/tractors have been Q-plates regardless of their cost or newness or originality.

"Regardless of anything, I'd have said something like Andy's moglite I'd have thought would have been a pretty good case for being registered as an agricultural implement."

Unless it dose agricultural, horticultural or forestry work or is on hire to a public authority for the purpose of snow/ice clearing or the spreading of salt or driving of stone crushing equipment, or the cutting of hedges or trees bordering public roads and is capable by design to pull/lift an implement and is being used “predominately” for the purpose of agricultural, horticultural or forestry, then there is no case for it being “registered as an agricultural implement or tractor”

Information is supplied or not - and that's entirely at everyones discretion.

Cat fighting and thinly-veiled comments are not really the way to behave.

If Andy doesn't want to comment on Moglite - it means just that, not that his truck is in any way suspicious.

Les. :)

Welcome to LR4x4

I rather like that avatar you've got, neat (until Ford sell LR on) :)

I use an old private plate to hide the age of mine but your experience of Q plates sounds good. Have you dealt with SVA as well?

some ones experiances are far more informative some times then a tech/data non personal write up?

This is how i got my Q-plate

Build a vehicle using varoius donor parts and a modified chassis

DVLA give me a new chassis number

Book an SVA test with VOSA

Get vehicle SVA'd

Get vehicle MOT'd

DVLA check where i got parts from

DVLA issue Q-plate

Simple as that :i-m_so_happy: (takes a few weeks to do as DVLA aren't known for being on the ball  )

There are two types of clasification. You could get registered as an agricultural machine or you can change the taxation class to 'limited use' which used to be known as an agricultural exemption. I have my Series 111 on one, no MOT (except for first year but I think they were wrong asking for this), free tax disc, ok to use red diesel. Limited to 6 miles a week from my own land to my own land. Must be roadworthy and insured (@£50). You can also use a car this way too if you are a farmer. I did have my racer classified this way too. A field a mile away that needed looking was a great way to do a road test.

different view or scenario:

one knackered 90 stariaght 2.5 d

needs chassis replacement and engine about to gop boom.

you buy a discovery 200tdi which has good engine

a new galv chasis (off ebay with no reciept)

when doing the work you replace a couplpe of panels,

the chasis is renewed

the disco engine is dropped in

and while youre at you decide to put the back axle on to discs - using the disco axle.

how does all that stack up

or to throw another spanner in the owrks you lift gearing by shoving the transfer box of your wifes range rover and the back ed of the gear box (youd be very clever to put it on the front!!))

Luckily I have never had to have a vehicle SVA, as they have either had EU wide type approval from the manufacture, or are exempt from needing a SVA due to the category they are being registered in, besides if you pick a Q witch is the lowest of the low form from the off, they know you are not trying to pass something of as newer than it is or as something it inset, as Q is of indeterminate age or origin, normally you get a choice if you can provide documents that prove date of manufacture

Lets face it, if you Q plate something before you modify it what can the DVLA/VOSA do? if your land rover 90 looks like a 404 Unimog but its on Q plates? All they are trying to do is catch out people how are trying to pass things off as something they are not or avoiding paying something! If you pass they get age related plates if not they get Q’s if your are on Q’s what is there to fail on?

There are plenty of Q plate ex-MOD land rovers out there, on a Q-plate there is not really much requirement to have much of the original vehicle beyond say the vin plate etc so you have a pretty free hand to create from the off ;)

Just my thoughts

Steve Hiatt

True, but the latter is dependent on you being a farmer and travailing from your land to your land 9.2km a week, the former is not reliant on that, as you can be a contractor without land, but carry out tasks for farmers as the farmer would himself?

Personally, I know I'm heading for an SVA and a Q-plate and I couldn't care less. If there are problems of non-conformity I have no issue with bringing my 'creation' into line. The only issue which worries me slightly is insurance.

Are there many options of companies willing to insure Q-plated cars? Is it trickier if you have a more extreme set-up (bigger engine or whatever)?

People's experience of this would be interesting.

i've built several cars now some Q plated some SVA'ed and some just VIC'ed. to be honest the "rules" have a lot of grey areas and are open to a lot of debate thus things can vairy a lot from place to place to make my point i built an ABS freestyle as did my brother mine was SVA'ed in taunton and passed my brothers which was identical bar colour failed at southampton so go figuer my tomcat on the other hand acording to the DVLA only needed a VIC which is a check carried out at your local DVLA office to see that what you tell them on paper is what you have on the road as for insurance just use a company that does kit cars as Q plates aren't a problem for them

hope this helps mike

I recall an article in one of the national Land Rover mags a few years ago, wherer a guy had a 2 door Rangie with a rusted chassis.

Build went like this:

New replacement chassis added.

Next he liked a newer engine and gearbox, then he wanted a four door body with interior.

Finally he put later axles on it.

All this was documented with photo’s, the final comment in the mag “it’s tax exempt”!

Nothing was left from the original vehicle! Don’t know if the DVLA caught up with him?

As for SVA and Q’ plates, I have absolutely no problem with a system to check the roadworthiness of a modified vehicle (its amazing what can pass just look at Scrappy Races or whatever it was called on TV) but why can’t I put a private plate on one? A Reg number is just a way of tracing a vehicle, the Police have computers that can tell them if its been registered as modified or not and no one will ever think that an extreme motor is a production vehicle from LR.

A Q plate does not stop thieves from selling stolen bikes or LR products, my mate bought both in good faith, luckily the Police told him he could keep them but not sell them on. He did get badmouthed by the Hardly Dangerous owners for buying a Q plate bike.

Q plates are like telling you that you are not part of society.

I feel better now.

I do know people who have not followed the rules about 'tax exempt'

and had there trucks/cars impounded and issued a 'Q' and told to think themselves lucky there not paying back tax or being charged for fraud.

that was years ago mind

mmm post make for interesting reading

I know Andy as a mate and have done for some time.

I also do not need to ask what he has done to his truck as i know andy for being far too straight laced for the truck to be anything but legal. Me on the other hand :):) it would still be on the donor plates :) but me and andy discused that many times and he knows my thoughts on it, and did and still will take the tiddle out of me for it

The clubs new rules about trucks being road taxed and MOT, and off road events across two sites was always going to be a problem and was a thought on Andys mind from the start of the project . Many a coffee at Andys house talking about it :)

Andy is a very methodical person and a perfectionist and you can see this by looking at the truck and at any point of the project you could ask him what it cost and he would rattle of pounds and pence of extactly what it owed him. And should be prasied for bring somthing new to the table (as such ) that no one has yet done in the UK , and getting it though the legal maze of the goverment carp with their department of moving goal post.

But there are sure to be more soon. :)

Hence why Mandy was probley asking the question. So no site of Mike for the next 6 months , banned to the garage on strick rules not to see daylight untill a monster truck is born :) ., So Mark get the welding torch ready :)

i Q plated a standard road car years ago due to buying a bodyshell from a scrappy when i stacked it. the only insurance company i found that would cover it was Tescos, with an engineers report & a 10% loading. i'd assume 4x4 specialist places are better for insurance due to the amount of Q-plate 4x4s out there.

This thread turned as you say Ali into a very interesting one.

Andy as you say has done a superb job which at no time i DID NOT say.

Infact as i have said TWICE i complimented how good both his truck AND the Shires were whilst in the arena.!!! :P

Mike will not be making a rival to Moglite ( Mark can breathe a sign of relief) :D

My question was about the system NOT Andys truck!! came about after a conversation with some one who is building such a project and the arguements that followed as to what was the right or wrong way to go about these things!

"I'll asked Andy" said me........... God i wish i'd never bothered! :(

Look Guys ... we have all moved on, but i have some spare pills floating around if you need them? :hysterical:

LOL!

Keep smiling!!!

Mandy.

Re insurance and Q Plates

Some insurers refuse point blank to insure a Q Plated 4x4, some will, however few will do agreed value policies

So its find one that siuts

Nige

I'm with the NFU. i explained that my 90 was a Q plate, i'd built it myself and had it SVA'd.

"no problem sir, just send us a copy of the SVA certificate"

no hassle, no loading, no bending over and getting shafted for having something "different"

they wern't even bothered about the BRB bar, winch, external cage and other off road stuff.
